Trump Bans Transgender People From Military

President Trump announced Wednesday that transgender people will not be allowed "to serve in any capacity" in the US military. 

In a series of tweets, he said the military "cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail." He said he made the decision after consulting with "my Generals and military experts." 

The move reverses a decision made under former President Obama in 2016, though the Pentagon had delayed implementing it in order to assess the impact. NPR notes that a Rand study estimated that about 4,000 transgender people already serve in the military and reserves, and it was unclear what the president's decision might mean for them.
