The state House sends to the Senate a bill that could help with the opioid epidemic. The Strengthen Opioid Misuse Prevention Act would forbid doctors from prescribing an acute care patient... for example, someone with a broken bone... more than a five-day supply of opioid pain killers, on the first visit. More could be prescribed in a follow-up visit. The limit would not apply to cancer patients and chronic pain sufferers. Analysis shows an average of four people die every day in North Carolina from opioid overdoses.
