IN ORWELLIAN MOMENT, SECRET POLICE INTELLIGENCE PROGRAM FOUND OUT IN BIG EASY

This is serious news.  Palantir, is a super secret Tysons Corner company founded by the CIA’s venture fund to mine social networks, financial records, and other data sources to identify targets for predictive strikes.  Palantir’s AI and data mining technology is usually reserved for the combat theatres involving Al Qaida and other state bad guys.  James Carville, a Palantir advisor and consultant, brokered a relationship between the City of New Orleans and Palantir to use their technology to preemptively lock up criminals and gangs in New Orleans.  On the surface, this technology seems to be great.  Except this was all done in secret.  Many city council members and civic leaders had no idea intelligence technology was being used on civilians.  Furthermore, the technology and algorithms have had known issues in which police could be targeting innocent people. I personally believe that we shouldn’t be so desperate to fight crime that we bring in secretive policing techniques to stop it.

WANTING TO GET OFF THE GRID BRITISH MAN ASKS TO BE FORGOTTEN

A British businessman has taken Google to court in a bid for the search engine to remove a 90’s criminal conviction from search engine results.  More than 2 million Europeans have petitioned Google to remove outdated or irrelevant information about them, and Google has serviced up to800,000 people.  In this case, Google is saying that the public has a right to view any lawfully public information which also includes court records.  The case has reached the UK’s highest court and is expected to last several days.

AMAZON BUYS RING, PAYING ITSELF A RETURN ON INVESTMENT

Amazon has been buying up everybody, and this week it’s bought itself.  This week, Amazon has announced plans to by Ring, a technology startup that makes a video camera attached to a door bell.  Many Ring enthusiasts love checking in on their front doors seeing who is thinking about Ringing them, but others have actually thwarted idiots who decided to bring into homes using the front door.  Ring was founded using money from Amazon’s Alexa venture fund meaning that they are essentially paying off their own investment.

AFTER DEPT OF COMMERCE MOON GAS STATION ANNOUNCEMENT, CELLULAR SERVICE IS SOON TO COME

The moon hasn’t gotten this much action since it was covered in cheese.  Vodafone Germany, Nokia, and Audi are attempting to back the first ever private mission to the moon that will enabled high def streaming of the landscape back to Earth.  In order to send this data back to Earth we’ll need high speed Internet.  I don’t know what’s more interesting, watching paint dry, or 24/7 of the lunar landscape.
