Asheville on pace for record number of homicides
According to the Citizen-Times, Asheville is likely to break the 10-year high of homicides - set in 2016.
Asheville Police have offered few details on the shooting, the eighth homicide in the city this year, which surpasses the total of seven for all of 2017. Over the last 10 years, Asheville’s highest number of homicides came in 2016, when nine people were killed.
Obviously, as the population increases the total number of homicides will likely rise. But this trend - and it's rapid pace - is not good. Particularly when we have City Council members saying we need to cut the police budget.
Gov. Cooper comes to town to pitch safety plan
Democratic Governor Roy Cooper toured TC Roberson High School yesterday, and pitched his $130 million proposal to improve school safety.
The governor said $40 million in his proposal would go toward funding approximately 500 additional school nurses, counselors, psychologists and social workers for public schools. He also wants more training for teachers and others to spot early warning signs of mental illness.

Cooper said that $10 million will go toward funding more SROs and $65 million will go toward facility upgrades. He emphasized that his plan does not include arming teachers, which he did not feel was the most effective way to eliminate threats.
On Monday, the GOP-led legislature committee adopted a report recommending more school nurses and counselors.
According to the News & Observer, "the legislative report didn't recommend any specific dollar amounts. But a different state report found that it could cost $45 million to $79 million more a year to meet different recommended staffing standards for school nurses."

The Democracy Alliance Spring Summit was entitled “Charting a Course to Progressive Power.”
The Far Left Dark Money group, Democracy Alliance, held it’s Spring Summit at a posh resort in Atlanta, Georgia this past April.
North Carolina’s Attorney General Josh Stein was not only in attendance, he was a panelist for a session called “How Progressive Attorney Generals are Changing Policy, Politics, and Party.”

I have not seen any concern from the usual NC leftists about outside interests and dark money groups trying to influence our elections.

Rubio is adopting some of Trump's rhetoric
I'm not talking about the personal attacks over hand size.
Sen. Marco Rubio wrote a piece at National Review yesterday called "Building a National American Conservatism," and argued there is a global competition between democracy and dictatorship.
He says dictators point to our divided society as proof that that democracy is self-destructive.
I am a conservative because I seek to conserve the principle at the core of the American project: freedom. It is the freedom to live a virtuous and meaningful life supported by family, community, faith, and the dignity of work. Today as much as ever, our nation needs a political movement that seeks to conserve freedom, because these core elements of American life are being threatened.
The American work culture — being able to earn enough to support a family — is under attack from global economic elites out of touch with working Americans. Insulated from the disruptions created by globalization, they care more about the profits multinational corporations can make doing business in China than they do about American workers losing their jobs.
The family, the single most important institution in all of society, is buffeted by economic pressures that discourage family life, and by social engineering that seeks to replace it.
The faith of our fathers and the traditional values it teaches are now routinely mocked, ridiculed and increasingly silenced by liberal elites in the press, Hollywood, and academia, denying millions of Americans their place in the public square.
The "global elites" language is straight out of the Breitbart Style Guide. Which tells me Rubio is not done running for President.
