Judge Denies Mistrial Request In Dixon Case

(Asheville, NC) -- The murder trial of Nathaniel Dixon will continue today in Asheville despite his attorney's request for a mistrial. Tiyquasha Simuel was found shot at Ivey and Boyd streets last Wednesday, less than two weeks after she testified as a witness in the trial. Dixon's lawyers wanted a mistrial due to the media coverage of the homicide, but the judge denied the request on Friday. Dixon is accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend three years ago in North Asheville.

Water Main Break Causes Problems In South Asheville

(Asheville, NC) -- A water main break that affected a few thousand residents in south Asheville yesterday is repaired. WLOS-TV is reporting a line broke on Sweeten Creek Road early in the morning and crews had wrapped up work on it around 4 p.m. The City of Asheville issued a boil water advisory for surrounding areas.

Motorcyclist Dies In BRP Accident

(Yancey County, NC) -- A South Carolina man is dead from injuries suffered in a motorcycle wreck on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Park service officials say he was riding with a group of motorcyclists heading to Mount Mitchell State Park on Saturday when the accident happened. The Columbia, South Carolina man reportedly hit the back of another motorcycle that slowed down to turn at Highway 128 in Yancey County.

WNC Counties Get State Help From Flooding

(Hendersonville, NC) -- Six western North Carolina counties could receive financial help from the state for last year's flooding. State Senator Chuck Edwards says Henderson County farmers are expected to receive assistance in the state budget from 2019 to 2021. State leaders are placing more than 750-million-dollars into the spending plan for areas affected by 2016's Hurricane Matthew and last year's Hurricane Florence. Other counties that are in line for funding are Buncombe, Rutherford, Polk, Haywood and Rutherford counties.

Fire Breaks Out In Hendersonville Walmart

(Hendersonville, NC) -- Hendersonville fire officials say a local Walmart was evacuated due to a small fire on Saturday. It broke out in the frozen foods section at the Highlands Square location. There's no word on what started the fire, which was put out quickly. A fire also broke out in the frozen foods section at the same store in April.

Board Seeks Input On Asheville Superintendent Search

(Asheville, NC) -- The Asheville City Board of Education is planning to seek community input in the search for a new school superintendent. Current superintendent Denise Patterson announced last week that she was leaving the position due to medical reasons, but will help in the search for a replacement. The board wants to know what the Asheville community desires in the new superintendent's skills and characteristics.

Two Dead In Suspicious Fire

(Alexander County, NC) -- Alexander County deputies are investigating a suspicious deadly fire. Two people died when flames tore through a mobile home on Pine Meadows Lane in Taylorsville late Saturday night. An eleven-year-old boy was thought to have died, while either his mother or 13-year-old sister was the other victim. The mother's former boyfriend was taken in for questioning yesterday.

Suspect Steals Van With Child Inside

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is trying to find a suspect who stole a van with a child inside on Saturday. The one-year-old was reportedly left in the van while it was running outside the Presbyterian Medical Center on Hawthorne Lane. Police say the child was dropped off at a Water Walk Lane apartment complex not long after the van was stolen. The van still hasn't been found.

Three At-Large After Sexual Assault Of Teen

(Charlotte, NC) -- Three men who allegedly sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl in Charlotte are still at-large. Investigators say the girl met up with someone she contacted online at a church parking lot on Eastway Drive on Thursday night. That man and two others are accused of assaulting the teen at an apartment complex before dropping her off at a convenience store back on Eastway Drive. The men reportedly drove off in a grey four-door car with black rims.

Sunday Night Shooting Injures One

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating a shooting that injured on person last night. Officers found the victim shot in the arm on Dundeen Street in northwest Charlotte. NBC Charlotte is reporting another person was grazed in the shooting. No arrests have been made.

Lakers May Target Walker

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Los Angeles Lakers could be going after Hornets-star Kemba Walker once he becomes a free agent on July 1st. The New York Times reported that the Lakers are considering Walker as a top target after signing all-star Anthony Davis to join Lebron James in L.A. Walker has expressed a desire to stay in Charlotte. He's spent his career with Charlotte since being drafted in 2011.

Man With Dementia Missing In South Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- An elderly man with dementia is missing from his south Charlotte home. A Silver Alert was issued after Domingo Peralta Perez disappeared from Flagstaff Drive on Saturday afternoon. He was last seen wearing a black and blue striped polo shirt with a San Francisco 49ers hat.

Machete-Wounded Home Invasion Suspect Arrested

(Hillsborough, NC) -- A teenage home invasion suspect who left UNC Hospitals with a machete wound is in custody. Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood says 19-year-old Jataveon Dashan Hall was arrested at his mother's home in Alamance County on Sunday. Hall is facing a number of charges after allegedly breaking into a home in Mebane Friday night. Deputies say Hall left the house after an eleven-year-old boy hit him in the head with a machete.

Retired UNC Medical School Professor Dies In Hudson River Marathon

(New York, NY) -- A retired UNC Medical School professor and researcher is dead after he disappeared during a marathon swim on New York's Hudson River. The News and Observer reports Charles van der Horst went under at the George Washington Bridge off New Jersey on Friday. The 67-year-old van der Horst was in one of the last stages of the 120-mile 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim. Since retiring from UNC Med School, van der Horst worked as a clinical trials training and global health consultant.

Sampson County Head-On Crash Kills 2, Sends 1 To Hospital

(Autryville, NC) -- Two people are dead and one is in the hospital after a head-on crash in Sampson County early Sunday. It happened near Autryville. The Autryville Fire Department says two people were pinned in a vehicle and firefighters needed a long time to free them. One person was taken to a nearby trauma center. Crews from Sampson County EMS, Roseboro Rescue, Sampson County Sheriff's Office, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol worked with Autryille firefighters.

Durham Police Investigate Early Morning Robberies

(Durham, NC) -- Police in Durham are investigating a pair of robberies early Sunday morning. Police say the holdups that left one man with a gunshot wound might be related. ABC11 reports the first happened around 2 a.m. in an apartment parking lot on Chalk Level Road. The two suspects who robbed and shot a man there might also have committed an armed robbery about two hours later at the Sky Sweepstakes parlor on North Roxboro Street.

Durham Health Officials Warn About Possible Measles Exposure

(Durham, NC) -- Health officials in Durham are warning about a possible measles exposure. They say someone who might have been contagious was at Bean Traders on Highway 54 last Monday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Health officials are running tests to learn whether the person has measles in what would be the first confirmed case in North Carolina in recent memory. They're encouraging anyone who was in the coffee house last Monday, and who hasn't been vaccinated or who is pregnant to call the Durham County Department of Public Health.

Woman Found Dead In High Point Apartment

(High Point, NC) -- High Point police are investigating after a woman was found shot to death in her apartment. Niekia Williams was found dead yesterday morning by her nephew. Police say her apartment on A West Avenue was filled with smoke because food was left cooking on the stove. So far, police have not identified a possible suspect.

Spread Peace Events Held In Greensboro, Winston-Salem

(Undated) -- Community members in parts of the Triad are hoping to put an end to violence. "Walk For Peace" events were held Saturday in Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Both cities have seen over two-dozen homicides so far this year. Religious leaders, neighbors and law enforcement also participated. A similar event was held earlier this month in High Point.

Two People Killed In Alexander Co. House Fire

(Alexander Co., NC) -- Two people are dead after a house fire in Alexander County. A mobile home on Pine Meadows Lane caught fire late Saturday night. When crews arrived, the home was fully engulfed. A women and a boy were reportedly found dead inside. Arson is suspected. A person is in custody.

Man Arrested In Randolph Co., Accused Of Strangling A Person

(Randolph Co., NC) -- A man is under arrest in Randolph County, accused of strangling a person. Bruce Lineberry was taken into custody this past Friday on felony assault and other charges. He's due in court today. There's no word on the victim's condition.

Asheboro Teen Shot, Killed

(Asheboro, NC) -- An investigation is underway in Asheboro where a teenage boy was shot and killed. Officers responded to the Coleridge Road Apartments just before noon yesterday. Eighteen-year-old Brian Lee was found dead in a car in the parking lot. Police say he suffered apparent gunshot wounds. There's no word yet on who shot him or why.
