Teen Accused Of Trying To Kill Two In Shooting

(Asheville, NC) -- A 17-year-old from Asheville is accused of trying to kill two people in a shooting last month. A west Asheville woman and a Swannanoa man were seriously injured in the shooting on May 23rd. Investigators say the suspect also shot into an apartment on Buffalo Street the same night. The teen was arrested last weekend with a bond set at just under half-a-million-dollars.

Suspect Charged With Arson At Boone Motel

(Boone, NC) -- Boone police are charging a man for allegedly setting several fires inside a hotel in February. The Watauga Democrat is reporting Ronnie Bumgarner was served a warrant for first-degree arson last Friday. He was already in Forsyth County jail for something unrelated. Damage was minimal from the fires at the Super Eight Motel on North Carolina 105. No one was injured.

Two Wrecks Shut Down I-26 In Buncombe County

(Buncombe County, NC) -- Emergency officials say they were busy trying to handle two wrecks that shut down parts of I-26 in Buncombe County on Monday. Westbound lanes were closed near Exit 23 after a truck hit the bridge over Old Marshall Highway. The DOT found no structural damage. A fiery tractor trailer crash caused the shutdown of eastbound lanes between Long Shoal and Brevard roads last night.

Testimony Continues In Dixon Murder Trial

(Asheville, NC) -- Testimony will continue this morning in the death penalty trial of Nathaniel Dixon in Asheville. He's accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend three years ago in North Asheville's Jones Park. WLOS-TV is reporting audio from Dixon's first police interview in Ohio was played for the jury on Monday. He was allegedly arrested in Columbus after fleeing the scene of the murder in May 2016.

City Council To Discuss Challenge To State-Imposed Election Districts

(Asheville, NC) -- The date is set for Asheville's city council to consider a possible challenge to the way the state wants local leaders elected. North Carolina lawmakers imposed a law last year that will mandate Asheville's council members be elected by separate districts. Voters overwhelmingly turned down the idea on a local ballot a few years ago. The governance committee will meet on July 2nd to talk about challenging the state law.

Teenager Shot To Death In NW Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating the deadly shooting of a teenage female in northwest Charlotte. The victim was shot multiple times at Beatties Ford Road and Lasalle Street on Monday afternoon. Three people were taken into custody by police. A CMPD officer says the community stepped up in helping find the suspects.

Statesville Council Refuses To Change Ordinance On Flag Size

(Statesville, NC) -- The Statesville City Council isn't changing its ordinance to allow a large American flag to fly outside an RV business along I-77. Statesville's Record and Landmark is reporting the council voted down an ordinance to change the limit on the size of the flag by a vote of three-to-five last night. The CEO of the business refuses to take the 40-by-80 foot flag down despite fines imposed by the city of Statesville. The planning board recommended last week that the size ordinance limiting the flag size to 25-by-40 be altered.

Two Arrested For Deadly Alexander County House Fire

(Alexander County, NC) -- Two suspects are in jail for allegedly setting a fire that killed two people in Alexander County last weekend. It happened at a mobile home on Pine Meadows Lane in Taylorsville. An eleven-year-old boy was thought to have died, while either his mother or 13-year-old sister was the other victim. Investigators are searching the Catawba River for another body. The two suspects were charged with three counts of first-degree murder.

Man Who Allegedly Stole Van With Child Inside Arrested In SC

(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect who allegedly stole a van with a one-year-old inside in Charlotte last weekend is now facing charges. Michael Crittenden was arrested in Conway, South Carolina on Sunday night. The child was reportedly left in the van while it was running outside the Presbyterian Medical Center on Hawthorne Lane. Police say the child was dropped off at a Water Walk Lane apartment complex not long after the van was stolen. The van was also found in Conway.

Suspect Accused In Rape Of Security Guard Arrested

(Charlotte, NC) -- Investigators say they've arrested the man accused of sexually assaulting a security guard at a Charlotte construction site earlier this month. Robert Harrison is facing charges of first-degree rape and kidnapping. The victim told the CMPD that he assaulted her while she was completing her rounds at the site on New Bern Road.

Former Democrat State Senator Joins U.S. Senate Race

(Raleigh, NC) -- A former state senator is jumping in the race for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Thom Tillis. Democrat Cal Cunningham announced yesterday that he's switching from a run in the lieutenant governor's race to the Senate race in hopes of gaining the Democratic nomination. Mecklenburg County Commissioner Trevor Fuller and state Senator Erica Smith are running on the Democratic side as well. Cunningham had an unsuccessful bid for U.S. Senate almost a decade ago.

Durham Budget Includes Pay Raises But No New Police Officers

(Durham, NC) -- Durham's new budget will raise minimum pay to 15 dollars an hour for part-time and seasonal city workers but it won't add any officers to the police force. The City Council approved the 477-point-eight million dollar budget on a 6-1 vote Monday night. The spending plan raises property taxes by three-point-six percent. That means the owner of a house valued at just under 230-thousand dollars will pay slightly more than 12-hundred dollars a year in property taxes.

NC Children's Hospital Suspending Complicated Heart Surgeries

(Chapel Hill, NC) -- North Carolina Children's Hospital is putting a temporary stop to complicated heart surgeries. UNC Health Care announced Monday it's suspending some pediatric heart procedures while an outside group looks into the hospital's practices. This comes after The New York Times reported on mortality rates higher than the national average and complications following what were considered low-risk surgeries. The state Department of Health and Human Services is investigating the hospital's child heart surgery program.

Possible Measles Exposure At Durham Preschool

(Durham, NC) -- Durham County public health officials are warning that children and staff at a Durham preschool might have been exposed to measles last week. The Durham County Health Department said Monday that a child who might have had measles was at The Goddard School last Tuesday morning. School officials say the child had been vaccinated for measles. Durham County issued a warning on Saturday about possible measles exposure at the Bean Traders coffee shop last Monday.

Kids Count Survey Shows Improvements For NC Children

(Undated) -- The latest Kids Count survey shows improvements for North Carolina children. The survey shows fewer children are living in poverty, fewer are in families without health insurance, and teen births are down dramatically since the last survey seven years ago. The state ranks 33rd overall for child well-being, 31st for economic well-being and 22nd for education.

Williamson Leads 5 Duke, UNC Freshman Expected To Go High In NBA Draft

(Undated) -- Duke superstar Zion Williamson leads a starting five of Blue Devil and Tar Heel freshmen expected to go high in this week's NBA Draft. Williamson is widely expected to go first overall to the New Orleans Pelicans. His Duke teammates R.J. Barrett and Cam Reddish and UNC stars Coby White and Nasser Little all could go in the first round as well.

UPDATE: Son Arrested In Woman's Shooting Death In High Point

(High Point, NC) -- A man is under arrest in the shooting death of his mother in High Point. Kasean Williams is accused of shooting his mom, Niekia Williams, in the head. The woman was found Sunday morning inside her apartment on West Avenue. Police say it was filled with smoke because food was left cooking on the stove. An investigation is ongoing.

Wrong-Way Driver Believed To Have Hit Pedestrian

(Burlington, NC) -- Burlington police are looking for the suspected wrong-way driver who hit and killed a pedestrian. The accident happened yesterday morning near Rauhut and Hatch streets. Police say Nathaniel Newton was driving south on northbound Rauhut when he hit Reginald Jeffreys, who was on the sidewalk. He's wanted on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, possession of marijuana and several other charges. Anyone with information on Newton's whereabouts is urged to call Burlington PD.

Winston-Salem Fire Chief Wants New Fire Station

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Winston-Salem's fire chief wants a new fire station in the city. Chief Trey Mayo says a station needs to go up on the city's southwest side where there's a big coverage gap. He pitched the idea to the full City Council last night. If approved, Mayo would hire additional firefighters to staff the firehouse.

Boy Is 3rd NC Shark Attack Victim This Month

(Bald Head Island, NC) -- An eight-year-old boy is North Carolina's third shark attack victim this month. It happened Sunday afternoon off Bald Head Island, about 90 minutes south of Wilmington. Authorities say the shark bit the boy on the leg. He's expected to be okay. A 17-year-old girl lost most of one leg and two fingers when she was attacked on June 2nd. A 19-year-old surfer was bitten on the foot a week later.

Lexington Is Getting New Skate Park

(Lexington, NC) -- A new skate park is being built in Davidson County. The 20-thousand-square-foot park is opening at Radcliffe Park in Lexington. It will cost just over one-million dollars. The skate park should be ready sometime this summer.
