First Flu-Related Death Of Season In Buncombe Co.

(Buncombe Co., NC) -- Buncombe County health officials are reporting the first flu-related death of the season. They say the patient was an adult under the age of 65. No further details were released. The North Carolina Division of Public Health says as of December 28th, 2019, there were ten flu-related deaths in the state.

Shooting Under Investigation In Asheville

(Asheville, NC) -- Several people are being questioned in connection with a shooting in Asheville that left a teenager in critical condition. The shooting happened Saturday at Hillcrest Apartments. Police say a 19-year-old woman was shot while she was lying in bed. They say a bullet came through her wall from a neighboring apartment unit and pierced her skull. So far, no arrests have been made.

Animal Cruelty Case Under Investigation In Greenville Co.

(Greenville Co., SC) -- The Greenville County, South Carolina Sheriff's office is investigating a bad case of animal cruelty. Deputies were called to a possible puppy mill along Dunklin Bridge Road Monday morning. Roughly 40 dogs were found in poor condition. Another two were found dead. The living dogs were seized by animal control. An investigation is ongoing.

NC Unemployment Rate Down

(Undated) -- North Carolina's unemployment rate is down. The state Department of Commerce says the jobless rate in November was three-point-eight-percent -- down point-two percent from October. The department says the unemployment rate fell in all of the state's 15 metro areas. Asheville had the lowest rate at two-point-six-percent.

$3.5M Awarded To WNC To Help Combat Opioid Abuse

(Asheville, NC) -- The Justice Department wants to help public safety and health professionals in Western North Carolina with the opioid crisis. Three-point-five-million dollars will help communities in the area. The Justice Department says just under 900-thousand of that will go to Buncombe County Health and Human Services.

Private School In East Charlotte Closes Suddenly

(Charlotte, NC) -- Nearly 150 students have to find new schools after a private school in East Charlotte shut down unexpectedly. Legacy Preparatory School says it will not reopen for the spring semester, which was supposed to get underway today. The school's principal told "WBTV" they were forced to close because funding from a big investor fell through.

Search Underway For Missing Man In Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are asking the public to help in the search for a missing man. Fifty-six-year-old Eric Byers was last seen on January 3rd. His vehicle was found abandoned on I-85 near the Catawba River a day later. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to call police.

Large House Fire Under Investigation In Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- An investigation is underway in south Charlotte where a large fire destroyed a two-story home. It happened yesterday afternoon on Jordan Rae Lane, near Ballantyne Commons Parkway. It took 40 firefighters to help combat the flames. No one was hurt, but fire officials say several pets died. Investigators are looking into the possible cause.

Deadly Shooting In Charlotte Deemed Self-Defense

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charges will not be filed against the gunman in a deadly shooting in southeast Charlotte this past summer. Police say the shooting was done in self-defense. It happened on August 14th at an apartment complex near Calibre Crossing and Causeway drives. An investigation revealed the incident started as a verbal altercation and escalated from there. Quandarro McCleary was killed. CMPD announced yesterday the man who pulled the trigger was protecting himself.

Flu Season Peaks, UNC Hospital, UNC Rex Bar Visitors Younger Than 12

(Undated) -- The flu season is peaking and UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill and UNC Rex in Raleigh are barring children younger than 12 from visiting. The restrictions went into effect Monday. UNC Hospitals also are reminding everyone that people who have a fever, cough, sore throat, or runny nose with nasal congestion should stay away from hospitals unless they're coming in for medical care.

Granville County Appoints New Sheriff

(Oxford, NC) -- Granville County has a new sheriff. The County Board of Commissioners appointed Charles R. Noblin Monday night. Noblin succeed former Sheriff Brindell Wilkins, who resigned in late September after he was indicted on charges of obstructing justice. Sheriff Noblin will be sworn in on Wednesday.

Triangle Showing Off Newest Electric Buses Today

(Raleigh, NC) -- You can take a look at the Triangle's newest electric buses today. GoTriangle will show off two electric buses in the plaza outside Raleigh Union Station, downtown at the corner of West and Martin streets. The buses raise the size of the region's electric fleet to six. Raleigh-Durham Airport put four electric buses into service in May, shuttling travelers between remote parking lots and the terminals.

Child Dies After Crash In Guilford Co.

(Guilford Co., NC) -- A seven-year-old girl who was critically injured in a head-on crash in Guilford County has died. Julianna Requejo passed away at Brenner Children's Hospital. The accident happened Saturday afternoon on Harlow Drive. Troopers say an F250 crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Toyota Camry. Shea Requejo-Croft and her husband, Luis Requejo, were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The couple's nine-year-old daughter, Jacquelyn, is expected to be okay. Charges are pending.

Man Accused Of Driving Drunk, Hitting Pedestrian

(High Point, NC) -- A man is accused of driving drunk and then hitting a pedestrian in High Point. The accident happened Sunday night on South Main Street. Police say Fredy Gonzalez hit the pedestrian, who was crossing the road against traffic. The pedestrian is expected to be okay. Gonzalez is charged with DWI, driving without a license and having an open container of alcohol in the car.

(Greensboro, NC) -- The Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in Greensboro is announcing two new sponsorship agreements. They include Kontoor Brands and Brady Services. Kontoor's sponsorship will fund the Lee & Wrangler Lounge, and Brady's sponsorship will pay for the Brady Services Suite. The Tanger Center is set to open this March.

Krispy Kreme Rolls Out New Donuts

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Krispy Kreme is helping folks keep their New Year's resolutions. The Winston-Salem-based donut company is rolling out mini donuts in its four most-common flavors. Smaller versions of the donuts now come in original glazed, chocolate iced with sprinkles, strawberry iced with sprinkles and chocolate iced glazed. Folks can try them for free on Monday afternoons in January.
