Hendersonville Woman Accused Of Killing Daughter

(Henderson County, NC) -- A Hendersonville woman is charged in her young daughter's death. Henderson County sheriff's investigators say 50-year-old Penny Hartle allegedly stabbed her five-year-old daughter at their mobile home in the Fruitland community yesterday. A neighbor told WLOS-TV Hartle went to a nearby home and got into bed after the stabbing. She will appear in court this morning.

North Carolina Resumes Johnson & Johnson Vaccine

(Raleigh, NC) -- The pause on the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine is being lifted in North Carolina. The Department of Health and Human Services gave the go-ahead to resume after the CDC and FDA said late Friday that the benefits from the single-dose medicine outweigh the risks. More than a dozen women nationwide developed blood clots following their Johnson & Johnson vaccinations, which have been given to around eight-million people. That includes more than 130-thousand in North Carolina.

Crews Battling Wildfire Near NC-TN Border

(Hartford, TN) -- Crews are continuing to fight a wildfire near the North Carolina-Tennessee border. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture revealed on Twitter last night that around 25-percent of a fire over 260 acres in the Mill Creek area has been contained. The I-40 Welcome Center and 30 residential structures have been under threat, but no damages have been reported yet. Rain kept the spread to a minimum over the weekend.

More Money Coming To State Parks

(Buncombe County, NC) -- More money is going to improve and preserve North Carolina's state parks and recreation areas. Governor Roy Cooper stressed the importance of outdoor activities in the mountain region last week. His state budget includes over 200-million-dollars to fund varying park projects, which more than doubles current amounts. He said he's grateful that legislation passed to create the new Pisgah State Park in Buncombe and Haywood counties.

Senate Candidate Touring WNC

(Asheville, NC) -- A North Carolina lawmaker is bringing his U.S. Senate campaign to the mountains. State Senator Jeff Jackson is in the midst of a 100-county tour as he mobilizes efforts for the 2022 race. The Democrat stopped in Haywood, Buncombe, Yancey, Rutherford and Polk counties over the weekend for town halls. He's running for the seat being vacated by Republican Richard Burr.

Buncombe School Stays Open After COVID Cluster

(Asheville, NC) -- A Buncombe County high school is expected to be open as normal today despite a recent COVID cluster. Seven confirmed cases were identified at Erwin High School at the end of last week. School officials said any affected areas have been deep-cleaned.

Vigil To Honor Life Of Seven-Year-Old Hickory Boy

(Hickory, NC) -- A vigil is planned in Hickory tonight to pay tribute to a seven-year-old boy. Zakylen Harris was shot to death last Wednesday while riding in a car with his mother and two younger brothers. A 23-year-old suspect is in jail for the murder. The event comes a night after the community gathered at Camp Green Park in Gastonia to honor the life of seven-year-old Gabrielle Jones, who was also killed in a shooting last week.

Suspect Arrested After Woman Dies In Hotel Room

(Charlotte, NC) -- A man is in jail for a hotel homicide in southwest Charlotte. Officers say a woman died inside a hotel room on Yorkmont Road early Saturday morning. A 44-year-old man was arrested on murder charges. The cause of death hasn't been released, but the CMPD says it stemmed from a domestic dispute.

Concord Mural Honors Avett Brothers

(Concord, NC) -- An American folk rock band is being honored in their hometown of Concord. WBTV reports the owner of Cicada Studios just unveiled a large mural of the Avett Brothers on the side of a building in downtown. The worldwide-touring band was on hand Friday to see the 30-by-40-foot artwork in person. Scott Avett said there's a kinship and connection they feel as both the band and the town grows.

Another Arrest Made In 2019 Rowan County Murder

(Rowan County, NC) -- A second suspect is facing charges in a Rowan County murder from nearly two years ago. Officers in the town of Landis arrested a man yesterday for the death of Timothy Austin Hall, who died in August 2019. A 60-year-old woman was initially arrested for Hall's murder last September.

Charlotte Woman Cashes In On Million-Dollar Lotto Winnings

(Charlotte, NC) -- A Charlotte woman is one of two big winners in the Cash Five lottery jackpot. Timiaya Ellison claimed her million-dollar winnings last week after matching all five numbers on a ticket purchased at the Circle K on University City Boulevard. Another ticket hit the jackpot on the same drawing, but there's no word on who may have won the second million-dollar prize. The combined two-million-dollar winnings was the most in Cash Five history.

Protesters Statewide Demanding Bodycam Video Be Released

(Elizabeth City, NC) -- Protesters took to the streets of Elizabeth City, as well as in other municipalities across the state Sunday, demanding more answers surrounding the death of Andrew Brown Jr. last week. Brown was shot to death by a Pasquotank County Sheriff's Deputy, reportedly as he tried to drive away from officers who were attempting to serve a search warrant. The demonstrators continued to call for the police bodycam video be released.

Sheriff Wooten To Ask Court To Order Video Be Released Today

(Pasquotank County, NC) -- Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten announced Saturday that he will formally petition a judge today to issue an order publicly releasing the bodycam video in the police shooting of Andrew Brown Jr. This comes as family members said Sunday, that they were hopeful they would be able to privately view the recording early this morning. Meanwhile seven Pasquotank County Sheriff's Deputies have been placed on administrative leave while the case is being reviewed by the State Bureau of Investigation. Under North Carolina law, police bodycam video can only be released by a court order.

Peaceful Demonstration And Vigil Held In Raleigh City Park On Sunday

(Raleigh, NC) -- Dozens of demonstrators gathered in Moore's Square in downtown Raleigh Sunday, to protest the death of Andrew Brown Jr., as well as other people of color who've been killed by police in recent weeks. The peaceful protesters used flowers and chalk to sketch phrases on the side walks in an effort to illustrate their frustrations over the shooting deaths. Others aired their feelings over an open microphone. The event, which last about three hours, ended with a candlelight vigil to honor the victims.

Cooper To Deliver State Of The State Address Before General Assembly Tonight

(Raleigh, NC) -- Governor Roy Cooper is set to deliver his biennial State of the State address tonight. The event is set to begin at 7 p.m. before a joint session of the North Carolina General Assembly. Traditionally, the State of the State address is usually given in February or March of every odd numbered year. But because of the pandemic and the health and economic challenges it has caused, Cooper has decided to give his third State of the State speech since first taking office in 2017.

Raleigh Man Charged With Murder In Death Of 4-Year Old Girl

(Raleigh, NC) -- An adult male is facing murder charges after being arrested in connection with the death of a four year old girl in Raleigh early Sunday morning. Officers responded to a call at a hotel around 4:30 a.m. about a wounded child in the 4400-block of Lead Mine Road. When they arrived, they found the little girl with serious injuries. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Police did not specify the types of injuries she sustained. Milton Ray Horton Jr. is being held at the Wake County Jail on one count of murder.

Man Arrested After Alleged Murder, Police Chase

(Asheboro, NC) -- A murder suspect is under arrest after leading police on a chase in Asheboro. The cops were called early yesterday morning to a home on Brookside Drive where they found 55-year-old Sherrie Shaw dead. Officers gave chase and eventually caught up with the suspect, 49-year-old Billy Smith Junior. He's accused of striking two patrol vehicles before getting stuck in the woods. Smith was arrested on multiple charges, including murder, vehicle larceny and fleeing to elude arrest.

One Nation 4 Justice March Held In High Point

(High Point, NC) -- Community members in the Triad are uniting against injustice. A One Nation 4 Justice march was held yesterday in High Point. Demonstrators marched to Morehead Recreation Center where they listened to speakers, including Police Chief Travis Stroud. A similar march was held last June, following the death of George Floyd, and drew about a thousand people.
