(Asheville, NC) -- Some people in Asheville are showing unified support of Ukraine amid Russia's invasion. Hundreds gathered at Pack Square on Saturday to focus on a war protest. One attendee with relatives in Ukraine told WLOS-TV that both Ukraine and Russians protesting the war are suffering.

Appeal Filled Against Court's Congressional Map

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina Republicans aren't giving up on a fight against new Congressional districts. House Speaker Tim Moore says an emergency appeal was filed Friday to overturn a map that was drawn up by a panel of outside experts. That plan was configured after a trial court wasn't satisfied with the state's map last week. Candidate filing began again on Thursday after the court approved the maps.

One Dead After Shooting Outside Cherokee McDonald's

(Cherokee, NC) -- The FBI is helping Cherokee Indian Police investigate a deadly shooting. One person was killed and another was injured in a shooting at a McDonald's parking lot in Cherokee on Friday night. A suspect was taken into custody, but charges haven't been released.

Mask Mandate Lifted At WCU

(Cullowhee, NC) -- Face mask guidelines are changing on the campus of Western Carolina University. The school announced over the weekend that the mask requirement will be dropped with the exception of health service operations and public transportation. The decision comes just after new guidance from the UNC system. WCU officials said members of the campus community should show respect for everyone's personal face mask decisions.

Vandalism, Assault Investigated At Asheville Homeless Center

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are investigating a vandalism and assault at an Asheville homeless center. A man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly tossed a rock through a window at AHOPE on North Ann Street. A newly-hired security guard told investigators that the experience shook him. Another man is wanted for reportedly assaulting a woman at AHOPE earlier on Saturday.

Petition Against Swannanoa Dollar General

(Swannanoa, NC) -- There's some opposition to another Dollar General store in Swannanoa. Over eleven-hundred people have signed a petition against the proposed new location due to traffic concerns around Rowland Road and U.S. 70. A county official told the Citizen-Times that the time for appeal with the Board of Adjustments has passed, but an administrative appeal can be made. There are several other Dollar Generals within a few miles of the site.

Supports Of Ukraine Gather In Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- Supporters of Ukraine are making their voices heard in Charlotte. Hundreds of people showed up at Romare Bearden Park over the weekend, marking the second protest in less than a week at that location. The leader of the Ukranian Catholic Church is also calling for prayer amid the conflict.

Suspect Arrested For Sexual Assault Of Girl

(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect is facing charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a girl in Charlotte. The girl told the CMPD she was attacked in the parking lot of the Harris Teeter on Wyalong Drive last Thursday night. The suspect has since been arrested for second-degree sex offense and attempted sex offense.

Fire Kills Man, Dog In Bessemer City

(Bessemer City, NC) -- Gaston emergency officials are investigating a deadly fire. A man and his dog were found dead after a blaze at the RV Camping Legion in Bessemer City early Sunday morning. In a separate Charlotte-area fire, an abandoned furniture plant was destroyed by flames late Saturday night. Crews are still investigating the cause.

(Charlotte, NC) -- The inaugural season for Charlotte FC is underway, but it didn't start off well. The club fell three-nothing to D.C. United on the road Saturday. Indoor Mask Mandate Ends In Mecklenburg County

(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- The indoor face mask mandate is over in Mecklenburg County. Commissioners voted to end the indoor requirement beginning over the weekend due to higher community immunity. COVID cases had dropped nearly 90-percent for the seven-day rate ahead of the commission's decision on Friday.

(Charlotte, NC) -- A shooting at a Charlotte mall seems to be accidental. The CMPD says a male suffered serious injuries after accidentally shooting himself at SouthPark Mall late Saturday afternoon. There was reportedly no threat to the public.

Davidson Basketball Maintains Conference Lead

(Davidson, NC) -- The Davidon men's basketball team is one-step closer to securing the number-one seed in the Atlantic Ten conference tournament. The Wildcats took down Fordham on Saturday to maintain a one-game lead over VCU. The team will finish out the regular season with match-ups against George Mason on Wednesday and Dayton on Saturday. Davidson is 24-and-four overall.

Harris, along with U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, will be in the Triangle to talk about a new Biden Administration initiative to create more union jobs. The effort is designed to make it easier for federal workers and contractors to unionize. The exact location of Harris and Walsh's appearance has not yet been made public.

Protest Held Outside State Capitol Building In Raleigh To Support People Of Ukraine

(Raleigh, NC) -- Hundreds of Ukrainians living in the U.S., along with their supporters, rallied outside the North Carolina State Capitol Saturday, to denounce the Russian invasion of their homeland. Organized by Olena Kozlova-Pates of the Ukrainian Association of North Carolina, the group waved Ukrainian flags, sang patriotic songs and chanted chants of freedom for the soldiers fighting against the Russians. Kozlova-Pates also said funds are being raised to help support the Ukrainian resistance.

NC Senator Calling For Ban On Sale Of Russian Vodka In The State

(Raleigh, NC) -- A North Carolina state Senator is calling on the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board to stop selling Russian-made vodka. In a message posted on Twitter Saturday, Democratic Senator Michael Garret said that while the action may be small and symbolic, it will show the world North Carolina's solidarity in opposing Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Across the county, bars and restaurants have already stopped selling Russian-made vodka and promoting Ukrainian brands instead.

Wake County Board Of Commissioners To Debate Controversial LGBTQ Book Today

(Wake County, NC) -- The Wake County Board of Commissioners will meet today to review recent policy changes regarding a controversial book on gender identity. This comes after seven copies of the book Gender Queer were ordered removed from the Wake County Public Library bookshelves back in December, only to have them returned a few weeks later. Opponents contend the books sexual content is too graphic for young students. But a group of Wake County librarians argue the County should keep a diverse selection of literature in school libraries.

(Raleigh, NC) -- Raleigh native Ariana DeBose has won the Screen Actors Guild award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role in West Side Story. The award for her portrayal as Anita, marks DeBose's first-ever nomination and win at the SAG Awards. During her acceptance speech Sunday, the 31-year old triple-threat thanked director Stephen Spielberg and the cast and crew of West Side Story before recognizing Lady Gaga in the audience.

UNC Men Down NC State For Second Time This Season

(Raleigh, NC) -- Over the weekend, the UNC men made a clean sweep of the season by defeating NC State for the second time this year 84-74 at the PNC Arena. The Tar Heels showed dominance early in the game by going on a 24-5 run with the Wolfpack only able to pull within nine in the first half. Led by Armando Bacot who had his 22nd double-double of the season with 28-points, 18-rebounds and five blocked shots, UNC had an 11-0 run in the second half to go up by as much as 22. NC State scored the final nine points of the game but that still was non enough. Leaky Black left the game early with a hyper-extended knee injury.

No More Face Masks On Many Area School Buses Beginning Today

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Many school districts across the Piedmont Triad will be doing away with the face mask requirement on school buses starting today. Most districts have continued to enforce masks on school buses in accordance with directives from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but on Friday, the CDC said they were no longer going to require masks on buses or vans operated by school systems. Many districts in the region will following that lead. Those include the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County District, and Davidson, Yadkin and Randolph County schools.

Area Rallies To Show Support For Ukrainian People

(Greensboro, NC) -- Guilford County residents from Ukraine and members of the community have been gathering to show support to Ukrainian people. Organizers met Sunday afternoon Trinity Church on Friendly Avenue in Greensboro in a show of what they say is concern for Ukraine's goodwill. Many attendees said they have friends and family overseas. There were also some people with Russian heritage in the crowd who say they don't support the war. The rally's promoters also say they wanted to recognize the brave and proud citizens who are defending themselves against attacks.

Paycheck Delay To Be Fixed

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Officials with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School District say delayed paychecks will be released soon. Staffers say the end- of-month checks had not been issued early this past weekend, as had been expected. The district said in a statement that the payroll file to Wells Fargo on Thursday and they're currently investigating why they were not released for payment by the bank until Friday. They say that's what's caused the delay in the direct deposits being made. School district officials say the bank has assured them that payments should go through by 2 p.m. on Monday.

Crash Involving Alcohol Leaves Two Dead

(Greensboro, NC) -- Police say a crash involving alcohol on Interstate 40 in Greensboro has left two people dead and two others seriously injured. It happened just before 10:00 p.m. Saturday night when an SUV crossed the median into oncoming traffic. The SUV collided with an eastbound Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 20-year-old from Greensboro, then hit a black Acura driven by a 32-year-old Greensboro resident. A Jeep Compass, driven by a 22-year-old from South Carolina, hit the back of the Silverado. Darius Deshawn Smyre and Antonio Maurice James of Greensboro were killed. A 29-year-old from Greensboro also died, but their name has not been released. The driver and the other passenger in the SUV were seriously injured as was the driver of the Silverado. The driver from South Carolina suffered minor injuries and the driver of the Acura was not hurt. Police believe alcohol was a factor in the incident but so far, no one has been charged with any crime.

Louisville Suffers Blowout Loss At Wake Forest

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- The Wake Forest Demon Deacons remained in control for most of Saturday night's game against the Louisville Cardinals, resulting in a 99 to 77 blowout over Louisville. Jake LaRavia had 23 points and Dallas Walton reached 22 points to lead the Demon Deacons in double figures. The loss was Louisville's second straight and 12th in 14 games. Next up, the Deacons face the Wolfpack of North Carolina State at home Wednesday with an 8:00 tip-off.
