Investigation Continues After Body Found In Woods

(Asheville, NC) -- An investigation is continuing into the death of a woman in Asheville earlier this year. The body of Rebecca Shular was found in woods off Bleachery Boulevard on January 5th. An Asheville police captain told WLOS-TV that the case is being investigated as a homicide, with the cause of death possibly being strangulation. The medical examiner hasn't released the cause of death yet.

Gas Prices At Record High In NC

(Asheville, NC) -- Gas prices are at a record high in North Carolina, and it may get worse. Triple-A reports the average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded stands at four-33, which is 14-cents greater than a week ago and 50-cents more than this time last month. The average in western North Carolina is greater than the rest of the state. The cost of a gallon is four-38 in the Asheville area.

Six Asheville City Council Candidates Move Forward

(Asheville, NC) -- Six Asheville city council candidates are moving on to the general election. The top vote-getters are looking to fill three seats on the council. Among the six are current council members Antanette Mosley and Sheneika Smith. Leading the way in Tuesday's primary was climate advocate Maggie Ullman Berthiaume.

Suspect Arrested For Breaking And Entering

(Asheville, NC) -- Another arrest has been made in an Asheville business break-in. The A-P-D says four suspects broke into a business on South Tunnel Road late last month. Officers initially arrested three people in the case for robbery and breaking-and-entering. The fourth suspect was taken to jail on Tuesday.

Company Expanding In Henderson County

(Henderson County, NC) -- An expansion is coming to a manufacturing plant in Henderson County. Commissioners approved a 790-thousand-dollar incentive for Meritor this week. The company is planning to invest over 40-million-dollars to add machinery and equipment in the next few years. Several dozen jobs will be added.

GOP In Considering State Employee, Teacher Raises

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina Republicans are looking into budget numbers that may result in state employee and teacher raises. Governor Roy Cooper proposed a two-point-five-percent increase for state employees and a seven-point-five-percent salary schedule adjustment for teachers. House Speaker Tim Moore said yesterday that the GOP is looking into the proposed raises, but they're still crunching numbers.

Courthouse Assault Suspect Arrested

(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- The search for a man accused of assaulting a woman at the Mecklenburg County courthouse is over. The sheriff's office says Devonte Johnson was arrested yesterday for assault, common law robbery, kidnapping, sexual battery and more. He's accused of striking the victim in the head on the eighth floor of the courthouse Tuesday. Johnson is also a registered sex offender.

Northeast Charlotte Homicide Investigated By PD

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a homicide in northeast Charlotte. Officers say a man died after being found stabbed on East Sugar Creek Road. The police department hasn't identified any suspects at this time.

(Hickory, NC) -- The city of Hickory is at the top of the list for its affordability. The U.S. News ranked Hickory as the most affordable place in the country. The city also cracked the to-40 for best places to live.

Mooresville Coach Charged With Sex Crimes

(Mooresville, NC) -- A Mooresville high school coach is facing a child sex crime charge. The Iredell County Sheriff's Office says Thomas Strahan allegedly left an inappropriate voicemail for a girl. He was arrested yesterday for felony indecent liberties with a child. Strahan coaches softball at Lake Norman High School.

Hurricanes Take Game One Against Rangers

(Raleigh, NC) -- The Hurricanes are off to a good start in the second round of the NHL playoffs. It took overtime for Carolina to defeat the New York Rangers in Raleigh last night. It was the opening game of th series. Game Two is tomorrow night at PNC Arena.

Temperatures Reach High For Year

(Charlotte, NC) -- A heat wave is hitting the Queen City. The National Weather Service is calling for highs to reach the mid-90s this afternoon. There's a chance of thunderstorms that could be severe later tonight. Highs will climb even higher tomorrow when the thermostat is expected to reach the upper 90s.

Yard Waste Pickup Changes

(Raleigh, NC) -- City officials want all Raleigh residents to be aware of pickup changes for yard waste. Beginning in July, yard waste and recycling will be collected on opposite weeks. Bright green carts have been dropped off to residents over the past few weeks and the process will continue for folks that haven't received a cart. Man Charged with Murder

(Raleigh, NC) -- Raleigh Police have charged a man in connection to the shooting death of a 22-year-old man. It's all stemming from an incident on Tuesday in the 6600-block of The Lakes Drive. The suspect, Rodney Stotts Jr. was arrested and charged with murder. Detectives are still trying to determine a motive behind the shooting.

Cutting Crime in Glenwood South

(Raleigh, NC) -- There has been an alarming rise of violence at Glenwood South. Police Chief Estella Patterson held a meeting yesterday with local residents on how police plan to keep people safe. Patterson said that officers increased patrols last weekend and they plan do the same moving forward. Patterson is hoping that businesses will also do their part with crowd control by not letting people in when they reach capacity.

Students Protest for Abortion Rights

(Carrboro, NC) -- Students in Carrboro are voicing their opinions on abortion rights. Hundreds of students at Carrboro High School skipped class yesterday to protest outside of the school. Moments later, nearly 300-youngsters walked to the UNC Chapel Hill's campus. The students were supervised by administration and local police.

Mayor Celebrates Hockey Win

(Raleigh, NC) -- Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin is a big hockey fan. The Mayor was in attendance for last night's playoff game when the Hurricanes hosted the New York Rangers at PNC Arena. Carolina took the lead in the series following a 2-to-1 win. Mayor Baldwin stayed to the end to celebrate following the overtime victory.
