Family Members Arrested In Case Of Diner Owner's Death

(Henderson County, NC) -- Two family members of a former Henderson County diner owner are facing charges in connection with her death. Paula Clark died a week after she was assaulted during an apparent attempted robbery May 6th. The sheriff's office revealed yesterday her 22-year-old grandson is behind bars for murder after he allegedly beat Clark with the butt of an air rifle. The murder suspect's uncle, who is also Clark's son, is accused of conspiracy to commit robbery.

Cawthorn Faces Ethics Investigation

(Washington, DC) -- Western North Carolina's Congressman is under investigation. The U.S. House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations that Madison Cawthorn had an improper relationship with one of his staffers. Members will also look into whether he improperly promoted a cryptocurrency. Cawthorn lost the Republican primary for District Eleven last week.

Juvenile Drowns Near Chimney Rock

(Chimney Rock, NC) -- A tragic drowning is being reported in western North Carolina. Rutherford County investigators told WLOS-TV that a juvenile disappeared while swimming with his family on the Rocky Broad River Sunday. The accident happened just outside Chimney Rock.

Two Arrested After Human Remains Found

(Macon County, NC) -- More details are coming out into the probable death of a missing woman in western North Carolina. Human remains were found over the weekend in Macon County shortly after an investigation began over the disappearance. The sheriff's office says two suspects were arrested yesterday for desecrating a human body. Another suspect was arrested for kidnapping a few days before.

Asheville Protester Arrested For Terrorizing Drivers

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville protester is facing charges for allegedly terrorizing drivers. Asheville police say a group of demonstrators blocked traffic in downtown last week. The suspect reportedly jumped up on one car, shouting "get him out." He was arrested for tampering with a car, failure to disperse and obstructing traffic.

Sign Brings Controversy In Waynesville

(Waynesville, NC) -- A controversial sign has some Waynesville residents questioning whether it's real. WLOS-TV reports neighbors have concerns over a sign that reads Future Home of the Hoochie Hut adult superstore and strip club. One man says the property owner is trying to get back at a homeowner's association for questioning his intention for junk cars on his lot. The property owner didn't reveal his true plans for the future.

Suspect Arrested For Gastonia Double-Shooting

(Gastonia, NC) -- A Charlotte man is facing charges in a double shooting. Two people were injured when gunfire erupted at a business on West Franklin Boulevard in Gastonia early Sunday morning. Officers arrested the suspect later in the day for two counts of attempted murder. He had apparently been fired from the business at the center of the scene.

Child COVID Boosters Available In Charlotte

(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- COVID boosters for young kids are available in Mecklenburg County. The shots are now being given out at health department locations on Billingsley Road and Beatties Ford Road. The Pfizer booster has been approved for children ages five through eleven.

StarMed Handing Out Free Baby Formula Thursday

(Charlotte, NC) -- StarMed is giving out free baby formula in the Queen City. Health officials will be giving away at least 600 cans at StarMed locations on Tuskegee Road and Central Avenue on Thursday. The distribution starts at 10 a.m. on a first-come, first-serve basis. There's been a shortage of formula nationwide after a large supplier shut down earlier this year.

Bus Slides Off I-77

(Charlotte, NC) -- A CATS bus accident is being investigated. NBC Charlotte says the bus slid into a ditch after plowing through a guard rail off I-77 last night. The driver was the only person on board and was not injured. The cause hasn't been released yet, but weather may have been a factor.

Suspect Charged In Union County Overdose Death

(Monroe, NC) -- A suspect is behind bars for a drug overdose death in Union County. The sheriff's office says a man died in March after taking a deadly dose of fentanyl. Investigators found firearms and 800 pills laced with fentanyl at the home of the suspect. He's now in jail for second-degree murder.

Thousands Of Hotspots Unused By CMS Students

(Charlotte, NC) -- Most of the hotspots paid for through pandemic funding are not being used by CMS students. NBC Charlotte reports ten-thousand hotspots were reported to have zero usage last month. That number is roughly 80-percent of the supply provided to the school district. Monthly plans for the unused devices came in at around 160-thousand-dollars.

Downed Trees, Powerlines And Widespread Flooding Caused By Monday's Storms

(Raleigh, NC) -- Clean up efforts will continue today in communities across central North Carolina in the aftermath of two storm systems that tore through the region on Monday. The first produced strong winds, a possible tornado and knocked down numerous trees and powerlines. The second brought heavy rain and prompted flash flood warnings to be issued in at least five Triangle area counties late last night. EMA officials also reported several large trees crashing onto houses in the Northgate and Grove Park sections of Durham. A fire at a townhouse complex in Chapel Hill was believed to have been caused by lightning. So far, there have been no reports of injuries.

Man Shot And Killed While Driving His SUV On NC-55 In Durham

(Durham, NC) -- A man was killed Monday after being involved in a rolling shootout with the occupants of another vehicle along NC-55 in Durham. Investigators say a group of people inside an SUV fired several shots at the driver of a black Jeep. The wounded victim then crashed into several cars in the parking lot of Jimmy's Famous Hot Dog's. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are still looking for the suspects who fired the shots from the SUV.

Adult Male Hospitalized After Being Shot Multiple Times At McDougald Terrace In Durham

(Durham, NC) -- About two hours later, Durham police responded to a second call of a shooting on Wabash Street and Ridgeway Avenue. When they arrived, they found an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and treated for serious injuries. No word on his condition. So-far there have been no suspects identified nor arrests made in this case.

Support Gaining Among North Carolina Republicans For Medicaid Expansion

(Raleigh, NC) -- After years of opposition, Republicans in the North Carolina General Assembly are reportedly working on a new bill that would expand Medicaid in the state. North Carolina is one of about a dozen states that have resisted Medicaid expansion since the passage of the Affordable Care Act. A draft Senate version of the proposed legislation would extend coverage to around 600-thousand low-income North Carolinians who make too much money for traditional Medicaid coverage.

Three Million Dollars In Federal Funds Awarded For Biking And Hiking Trails In Raleigh

(Raleigh, NC) -- Raleigh and Wake County leaders have announced the awarding of a federal grant totaling three-million dollars, that would help fund new biking and walking trails.
