His car was discovered in a restaurant parking lot a short time later, but the case went cold. Robert Owens pleaded guilty yesterday to being an accessory after the fact of murder.

State AG Applauds Buncombe Addiction Program

(Buncombe County, NC) -- North Carolina's attorney general is applauding Buncombe County's angle to treating drug addiction. Josh Stein stopped yesterday at the jail, where he learned more about Buncombe's Medicated-Assisted Treatment Program. The county' efforts to help inmates recover from addiction is one that Stein said can be a model for others across the state. The state recently received a massive settlement from the nation's big opioid distributors, which will help local strategies.

Forensic Nurses To Begin Work At WNC Hospital

(Sylva, NC) -- A forensic nurse program is being launched in western North Carolina. WLOS-TV reports six trained examiners will begin work at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva on August 1st. The nurses are trained in collecting evidence and providing resources for sexual assault cases.

Former Teacher Sentenced For Pornography

(Buncombe County, NC) -- A former Buncombe County teachers is heading to prison. A judge sentenced Christopher Lee Todd yesterday to just over three-years for child pornography charges. Investigators say they found thousands of images on his electronic devices. Todd previously taught at Cane Creek Middle School in Canton.

Stadium Demolition Underway

(Canton, NC) -- Improvements are underway at a western North Carolina football stadium. Crews are busy this week demolishing Pisgah Memorial Stadium, which was heavily damaged by remnants of Tropical Storm Fred nearly a year ago. The turf is in the process of being removed and replaced. Federal funding will help continue to pay for renovations to the stadium.

Monkeypox Vaccines Coming To Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- More monkeypox vaccines are coming to Mecklenburg County. Public health officials confirmed Monday that 700 doses are coming to Charlotte, amid a waiting list of over 600 people looking for the shots. Around two-thirds of North Carolina's 27 monkeypox cases have been identified in Mecklenburg County. The illness causes flu-like symptoms for several weeks.

Charlotte Murder Suspect Arrested

(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect is behind bars for an east Charlotte killing. A ma was shot to death at an apartment complex on Sharon Pointe Road early Friday morning. A 20-year-old suspect was arrested for murder yesterday. Investigators say they believe the man and victim knew each other.

Fight On GoTriangle Bus Ends With Passenger Being Slashed In The Face

(Raleigh, NC) -- One passenger aboard a GoTriangle bus had to be hospitalized after being slashed in the face by another passenger during a fight. It happened just before 7 p.m. as the bus was traveling along the 200-block of South Wilmington Street in Raleigh. Police are investigating to try and determine what caused the altercation. The suspect, identified as 32-year old Phillip Brimmage, was arrested and taken into custody. The victim's injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

(Raleigh, NC) -- Political experts are predicting a low voter turnout today as a variety of different elections are being held in communities across North Carolina. In the Triangle area, voters in Rocky Mount, Cary and Franklin County are casting ballots in runoff elections. While in Fayetteville and Sanford, voters are deciding on candidates in general elections. Over 40-Shots Fired During Drive-By Shooting At Durham Convenience Store

(Durham, NC) -- Police in Durham continue to search for suspects who fired over 40-shots at people outside a convenience store on Morehead Avenue and Chapel Hill Road Sunday. There were no injuries, but at least two vehicles and the store were riddled with bullet holes. Investigators are examining surveillance video to try and identify the car the suspected shooters were riding in. So-far, no arrests have been made.

Canes Re-Sign Forward Ryan Dzingel For Upcoming Season

(Raleigh, NC) -- The Carolina Hurricanes announced Monday, that it is bringing back forward Ryan Dzingel to the squad. According to GM Don Wadell, Dzingel was signed to a one-year two-way contract for 750-thousand dollars at the NHL level and 150-thousand at the American Hockey League level with a 200-thousand dollar guarantee. The 30-year old Dzingel played with Arizona and San Jose last season.
