Jackson County Man Guilty In Deadly Chase

(Jackson County, NC) -- A Jackson County man is heading to prison for causing a death in a high-speed chase. It was July 2021 when officers say Dalton Suttles was high on methamphetamine before slamming into a truck on U.S. 23/74. The wreck killed one person and injured two-others. Suttles was sentenced to at least 16-years yesterday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.

(Raleigh, NC) -- New test performance results are in for North Carolina's public schools. The Department of Public Instruction released results yesterday which show more than 800 schools are considered to be low-performing, based on results from last school year. It's nearly twice as many as reported in the full school year prior to the pandemic.

Teen Girl Injured In Asheville Shooting

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are investigating the shooting of a teen girl. A 14-year-old girl is being treated for injuries after being shot in the chest on Erskine Avenue yesterday morning. A lockdown was placed a nearby schools, including Asheville High and Middle. School officials confirmed there was no shooing on campus.

Grant Program Available To Prevent Road Crashes

(Hendersonville, NC) -- A new federal grant program could help address an increasing number of traffic crashes in western North Carolina. The Safe Streets and Roads For All initiative goes towards improving roadway safety after local entities adopt an action plan. Buncombe County will vote whether to be part of the program next week. The director for the French Broad River Metropolitan Organization told WLOS-TV that roadway crashes have increased 50-percent in the last couple of decades.

Wrongful Death Trial Resuming In Buncombe

(Asheville, NC) -- A wrongful death trial against Buncombe County's Metropolitan Sewerage District is continuing today. A 20-year-old woman died after slamming into the back of a flushing truck parked on Smokey Park Highway six-years ago. Two witnesses for the defense gave testimony yesterday. A consulting engineer said the woman was driving too fast to stop before hitting the truck.

Apple Festival Starts Today In Hendersonville

(Hendersonville, NC) -- The North Carolina Apple Festival starts today. Local apple farmers will be on hand along Hendersonville's Main Street through Monday for the annual event. There will be music and activities as well. The King Apple Parade will conclude the event on Monday afternoon.

Most Monkeypox Cases Still In Mecklenburg County

(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- Mecklenburg County continues to have a great number of the state's monkeypox cases. Health and Human Services reported more than 40-percent of North Carolina's 135-cases are local. Cases have now been confirmed in three females and two children statewide. One of the pediatric cases is in Mecklenburg County.

Deputies Make Fentanyl Bust In Iredell County

(Iredell County, NC) -- A man is facing charges connected to a drug bust in Iredell County. The sheriff's office says the suspect was caught Monday with a brick of fentanyl that could have possibly been enough to kill 250-thousand people. The man allegedly assaulted two deputies before leading them on a chase down I-77. He was eventually arrested after ramming into a patrol car.

Curry Given Key To City Of Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- NBA star Steph Curry has a key to the city of Charlotte. Mayor Vi Lyles and the city council presented Curry with the honor yesterday, following recognition earlier this week from Davidson College. The two-time MVP played for the Wildcats 15-years ago and had his jersey number retired. Curry graduated from Charlotte Christian School.

One Dead In Concord Hit-And-Run

(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- A deadly hit-and-run is being investigated in Concord. Officers say the victim got out of his car during a dispute over a parking spot at the Walmart on Thunder Road last night. The suspect allegedly struck and killed the man before driving off. WSOC-TV reports the driver was found for questioning.

Suspect Accused Of Selling Fake Sports Apparel

(Mint Hill, NC) -- A Mint Hill man is accused of selling off fake sports apparel. The U.S. District Attorney's Office says the suspect spent five-years making millions of dollars selling off merchandise he purchased from China and pawned off as major sports brands. Investigators finally seized one of his shipments in August of last year.

(Charlotte, NC) -- The 49ers are in seek of win number-one for the 2022 football season. UNC Charlotte is hosting William and Mary at Jerry Richardson Stadium tonight. Charlotte fell to Florida Atlantic is the season opener last weekend. Kickoff is at seven.

Student Brawl At Onslow County High School Leaves One Stabbed To Death

(Jacksonville, NC) -- A fight between students at a high school in Jacksonville, left one of them stabbed to death and another hospitalized. A teacher who tried to break up the altercation also received non-life threatening injuries. It happened around 7:am Thursday at Northside High School on just the fourth day of classes. The school was placed on lockdown for several hours while law enforcement officers secured the premises. One juvenile suspect, along with two other students were taken into custody.

Three Year Old Girl Dies From Fentanyl Overdose; Mother And Roommate Charged With Murder

(Lee County, NC) -- Two Lee County women are facing second degree murder charges after a three year old girl died of a fentanyl overdose. The incident happened back in April in the town of Sanford. Authorities say roommates Jasmine Bethea and Janell Smith were both arrested on Wednesday, following an autopsy report that determined the cause of death of Bethea's daughter was fentanyl intoxication.

Students At UNC Chapel Hill Warned After Series Of Break-Ins At A Campus Dorm

(Chapel Hill, NC) -- Officials at UNC Chapel Hill have issued a warning to students to be on the lookout for thieves following a series of burglaries at a residential housing facility. Campus police say there have been at least three break-ins at the Hinton James Residence Hall on Manning Drive between August 26th and September 1st. The warning advises students to always lock their dorm rooms and not to hold doors open for people who may not live in the building.

New Report Finds North Carolina Students Not Performing At Grade Level

(Raleigh, NC) -- A new report, released by the State Department of Public Instruction finds nearly half of North Carolina's public school students are not performing a grade level. According to the annual state accountability report for 2021, only 51-percent of students performed at or above grade levels in all subjects. State education officials attribute the decrease partly to learning challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Soldiers Continue To Be Re-Located From Contaminated Ft. Bragg Barracks

(Ft. Bragg, NC) -- Military officials at Ft. Bragg say so-far, they've been able to move more than 200-soldiers from the Smoke Bomb Hills barracks. This, after the buildings were found to be infested with mold and multiple other problems, causing many of the soldiers to become ill. The goal is to re-locate over 12-hundred soldiers living at Ft. Bragg.

Black Students Plan To Pack Cameron Indoor Stadium Today For Duke Women's Volleyball Game Against East Tennessee State

(Durham, NC) -- Black students who attend Duke University have announced plans to pack Cameron Indoor Stadium today, when the Blue Devils women's volleyball team take on East Tennessee State. It's all in a show of support for Outside Hitter Rachel Richardson, who was repeatedly heckled and called racial slurs by fans in the student section in a game against BYU last week in Provo, Utah. Duke athletic officials also say extra security has also been assigned to the event. The game starts at noon.
