(Asheville, NC) -- Residents in western North Carolina will feel impacts from Hurricane Ian today. There's a good chance of rain and significant wind conditions in the mountains, while heavier impacts will be felt in the Piedmont. The hurricane is expected to make landfall again along the northeastern South Carolina coast. Winds around the Asheville area could gust up to 50 miles-an-hour.

Protests Held Over School Bathroom Privacy

(Swain County, NC) -- Bathroom doors are causing an uproar at Swain County High School. WLOS-TV reports a protest was held yesterday after the doors were taken down to help prevent vaping and vandalism. School officials say no one can see in, but some parents and students are concerned about privacy. The director of school safety advised the doors will be put back in place on Monday until a solution can be found.

Groundbreaking Held For Harrah's Expansion In Murphy

(Murphy, NC) -- Harrrah's is undergoing a big expansion in Murphy. Casino officials broke ground yesterday at the Cherokee Valley River Casino and Hotel. It signifies the start of construction of a new gaming floor, hotel tower and restaurant. The 275-million-dollar project is expected to be completed sometime in 2024.

Attorney General Warns About Price Gouging

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina state officials are worried about price gouging again. Attorney Josh Stein is warning residents to be on the lookout for scams, gouging and charity fraud in the wake of Hurricane Ian. Businesses are banned from unreasonably marking up items once a state of emergency goes in place, which was started this week by the governor. Stein says he wants anyone to report concerns of price gouging to his office.

DOT Crews Prep Roadways

(Buncombe County, NC) -- The North Carolina DOT has been prepping roadways in Buncombe County. Crews were out this week to make sure all drains were in clear in preparation for potentially flooding rain. Tools like chainsaws are at the ready in case they're needed to cut through any fallen trees.

Affordable Senior Complex Expansion Okayed

(Asheville, NC) -- An affordable senior housing complex in Asheville is doubling in size. The city council approved the expansion of Laurel Wood in the Shiloh area. The development will have roughly 105 affordable units when it's complete. A one-and-a-half-million-dollar Housing Trust Loan was also approved for the project earlier this week.

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Charlotte area is in for a day of nasty weather. Mecklenburg and surrounding counties are under a tropical storm warning as Hurricane Ian moves closer to another landfall today. The National Weather Service is calling for between three-to-five inches of rain. Winds will play a big factor today as well.

Four Arrested For Lancaster County Murder

(Lancaster County, SC) -- A 20-year-old and three juveniles are facing charges in the death of a teen in Lancaster County. Jashawna Coleman was just 15-years-old when she was shot at the Foxwood apartment complex in Kershaw early Sunday morning. Investigators tracked down the man, two 16-year-old boys and one 15-year-old by using surveillance footage from the scene. They've all been charged with murder.

Outdoor Events Shift In Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- Hurricane Ian is causing some schedule changes around the Queen City. The performance of the Blue Lapis Light Dancers for the Charlotte International Arts Festival has been put on pause until tomorrow. Other festival events have been moved inside at SouthPark Mall. The Taste of Charlotte is being shifted from this weekend to next at Truist Field.

School Board Okays Purchase Of Air Unites

(Charlotte, NC) -- Cooler temps are on their way for some Charlotte classrooms. The CMS school board agreed this week to purchase new HVAC units for mobile classrooms in close to 20 schools. The purchases will cost just over 100-thousand-dollars.

Local Schools Recognized For Achievements By DOE

(Charlotte, NC) -- Two area schools are being honored nationally for their achievements. The Department of Education has named Gaston County's W.A. Bess Elementary and Fort Mill's Gold Hill Elementary as Blue Ribbon Schools for this year. Schools chosen for this distinction are recognized because of high test scores, career readiness, top rates for test scoring in subgroups and more. Less than 300 schools gained the status nationwide.

The discovery was reported just before 4 p.m. near the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Creedmoor Road. Good Samaritan Shot And Wounded At Fayetteville McDonald's While Trying To Break Up A Fight

(Fayetteville, NC) -- A Fayetteville man remains hospitalized in serious condition today after being shot while trying to break up a fight. It happened around 4:30 p.m. yesterday at a McDonald's location on Raeford Road. Investigators say the victim did not know the two people involved in the altercation. Both suspects left the scene before police arrived.

Ft. Bragg Doctor And Wife Indicted For Supplying Russians With Medical Information About American Military Personnel

(Ft. Bragg, NC) -- A Ft. Bragg doctor and his wife have been indicted on accusations of attempting to provide confidential medical information about U.S. military personnel to the Russian government. Court documents show Maj. Jamie Lee Henry and his wife Anna Gabriellian, hoped to help Russia in its ongoing war with Ukraine. Both have been charged with conspiracy and wrongful disclosure of individually identifiable health information. If convicted, they could be sentenced to up to 15-years in prison.

Impact of Hurricane Ian to Hit Area Earlier Than Predicted

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Weather officials say the Piedmont Triad region will feel the effects of Hurricane Ian earlier than they'd predicted. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service say the storm is moving "faster than previously anticipated" and rain could reach North Carolina early Friday. Wind gusts of up to 50 miles-per-hour and heavy rains are expected Friday night with the Triad area getting three to five inches of rain.

Area Schools Close, Modify Schedules Friday Due to Storm

(Greensboro, NC) -- School officials from several area districts are either shutting down classes or going to remote learning Friday. A news release from Guilford County Schools says they're going to remote learning due to Hurricane Ian approaching North Carolina. All evening events have been canceled and Saturday activities could be cancelled as well for GCS. Davidson County Schools will hold classes remotely Friday, too. In Forsyth County, schools will be closed Friday due to the potential for high winds, heavy rain and power outages. Surry County officials say students will get out at 1 p.m.

Woman Charged With Death by Vehicle for Pedestrian Hit at McDonald's

(Greensboro, NC) -- A Greensboro woman has been charged for hitting a pedestrian in a McDonald's drive-thru who later died. Police released information about how 50-year-old Linda Jenkins was walking in the parking lot when she fell and was hit by Aleyah LeGrande. Jenkins died Sunday at a nearby hospital. The incident happened at the McDonald's in the 2300 block of Randleman Road. LeGrande faces charges of failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision with a pedestrian and misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Gunshot Victim Seriously Wounded in Greensboro

(Greensboro, NC) -- Police are investigating a shooting Thursday night in Greensboro. Officers arrived at the scene in the 800 block of Glenwood Avenue just before 9:00 p.m. to find a person seriously injured from a gunshot wound. The victim has not been identified. A department news release says no suspect information is available and their investigation continues.

No. 1 East Forsyth Beats No. 2 Mount Tabor

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- East Forsyth's Trenton Dozier has helped his team to a victory Thursday night with a third-quarter touchdown on a 49-yard run against Mount Tabor. Dozier and the Eagles won the battle of Central Piedmont 4-A Conference unbeatens 31-13 at Bob Sapp Field in Winston-Salem. Mount Tabor quarterback Semaj Reaves-Smith passed for 114 yards total in the game.
