(Asheville, NC) -- The cost of living in Asheville is tops in the state. That's according to a new study by the Council of Community Economic Research, which analyzes housing, food, utilities, transportation and healthcare costs. While cost of living is the most in North Carolina, the Asheville metro area has the state's fifth highest hourly wage.

Haywood School Closes Because Of Flu

(Haywood County, NC) -- The flu is having a big impact on some western North Carolina schools. WLOS-TV reports Shining Rock Classical Academy in Haywood County shut down on Friday so crews could complete a deep-clean. More than 100 students missed school towards the end of the week. The school remained closed yesterday for a regular teacher workday.

Driver Dies After Hitting Asheville Home

(Asheville, NC) -- A man is dead after slamming into a home in Asheville. Officers say it appears he lost control while driving an SUV on West Chapel Road Saturday afternoon. The SUV hit an occupied residence, but no one inside was hurt. The driver died on the scene.

Another Townhome Development Proposed In Buncombe

(Arden, NC) -- A Georgia-based developer is proposing a townhome project in Buncombe County. The board of adjustments will take up a vote one week from tomorrow for an 84-townhome development on eight-acres off Christ School Road in Arden. The Citizen-Times reports four other projects from the same developer have already been approved, including a 120-townhome project.

One Injured In Cullowhee Shooting

(Cullowhee, NC) -- Police in Cullowhee are investigating a weekend shooting. Officers say one person was injured when gunfire erupted at an apartment complex late Saturday night. No arrests have been made. The police department is reminding everyone to be vigilant and be aware of their surroundings.

Elk Warning Signs Placed In Haywood County

(Haywood County, NC) -- New signs in Haywood County are geared towards helping drivers stay aware of wildlife. WLOS-TV says six new solar-powered signs warning people about elk have been placed along Highway 19 at the Soco Mountain area. LED lights on the sign are supposed to flash 24-hours -a-day.

Woman Injured In Charlotte Drive-By Shooting

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is looking for the suspect in a drive-by shooting. A woman was behind the wheel on the Plaza in east Charlotte Sunday when a bullet shattered her window. She was hit, and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The only information police have to go on is that the suspect's car is dark-colored.

York County Could Receive 80-Plus-Million For Failed Practice Facility

(York County, SC) -- York County could receive a sizable sum of money from a failed deal with the Carolina Panthers. A judge decided yesterday to set the county's voting stake at more than 80-million-dollars in the upcoming bankruptcy case for GT Real Estate. A plan to build a new practice facility was taken off the table when the company ran into trouble.

(Union County, NC) -- Union County deputies are looking for Halloween vandals. Investigators told WSOC-TV several acts of vandalism across Monroe were reported on Saturday night. In some instances, inflatables were slashed. One man said he hopes a scanner at the front of his neighborhood was able to identify the car.

(Belmont, NC) -- A Belmont armed robbery suspect is at-large. The man allegedly threatened employees at the State Employee's Credit Union in Belmont yesterday. The man wore a fanny pack and fled in a dark-colored SUV. No injuries were reported.

Police Looking For Driver Who Struck And Injured A Woman Who Was Out Trick-Or-Treating

(Johnston County, NC) -- A Johnston County woman is recovering after being injured in a hit-and-run while out trick-or-treating with her children. It happened Monday night near the intersection of Mulberry Banks Drive and Sugarcane Court in Clayton. Police say the woman was struck while walking with two children along the poorly lit road. Neither of the children were hurt, but the driver kept going. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Investigators are continuing to search for the suspected vehicle.

Child Grazed By A Bullet In A Road Rage Shooting In Orange County

(Orange County, NC) -- Sheriff's deputies in Orange County are investigating a suspected case of road rage that resulted in a child being grazed by a bullet. It happened Monday evening near a Shell gas station along the 1400-block of U.S. 70-East in Hillsborough. According to the child's father, the shot was fired by a man driving an SUV, with the bullet penetrating his vehicle and grazing the child who was strapped to a child safety seat. The child's injuries were not life-threatening. So-far, there have been no arrests in this case.

Days Before The Mid-Term Elections Shows Record Number Of North Carolinians Have Voted Early

(Raleigh, NC) -- Figures released by the North Carolina Board of Elections show that more than one-million voters have casts ballots early so-far this year. Of that number, Democrats have casts over 456-thousand ballots, 358-thousand Republicans have voted early and 342-thousand unaffiliated voters have also casts ballots early. Today is the last day to pick up absentee ballot applications. Early voting ends on Saturday in North Carolina.

More Ft. Bragg Soldiers Return Home From European Deployment

(Ft. Bragg, NC) -- Members of the 18th Airborne Corps returned home to Ft. Bragg Monday, after spending the last 9-months on deployment in Eastern Europe. The more than 300-soldiers were assigned to Germany and Poland to support NATO allies and to train Ukrainian military personnel in their war against Russia. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is scheduled to visit Ft. Bragg today to officially welcome the soldiers back home.

Hurricanes Defeat The Washington Capitals In Overtime

(Raleigh, NC) -- The Carolina Hurricanes won their second overtime in as many games last night, with a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals at PNC Arena. After finishing regulation in a 2-2 tie, Andrei Svechnikiv scored the winning goal in a shootout, putting the Canes ahead once and for all. Carolina also got help from Frederik Andersen, who had 18-saves during regulation, along with Stefan Noesen with one goal and Martin Necas who had w two assists. Svechnikov's first goal with 4:18 to go in the second, tied the game for the Hurricanes. Carolina also won in overtime Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers.

NC Scientists: New COVID Subvariants Should Be Suppressed With Booster Shots

(Raleigh, NC) -- Researchers at Duke University say they're keeping an eye on new COVID-19 subvariants that are becoming more common. Subvariants are cells that are resistant to key antibody treatments. However, the scientists say the subvariants should respond to the new B-A-Five booster shots as new infections continue to decrease in North Carolina. They tell WNCN-TV it's still not clear which variants will become most common this winter.

Trick-or-Treating Teens Hit by SUV, One Has Died

(Guilford County, NC) -- State highway patrol officers say a teenage girl has died from her injuries after she was hit by an SUV while trick-or-treating. Officers say the two girls were walking on Haw River Road in Guilford County when they were struck. One of them died from her injuries and the other was taken to the hospital. The driver who allegedly was involved stayed on the scene to help police.

Police Looking for Suspects who Robbed Yadkinville Gun Store

(Yadkinville, NC) -- Yadkinville Police and Federal ATF agents are looking for two men who drove a car through the front door of a gun shop and stole ten firearms. The manager of the Foothills Firearms and Ammo Store says surveillance video shows the duo was in and out in under a minute, leaving with more than six-thousand-dollars' worth of guns. The store's owner is offering a five-thousand-dollar reward for information leading to an arrest.

Young Teen Charged In Death Of 10-Year-Old Cousin

(Reidsville, NC) -- A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the shooting of his 10-year-old cousin in Reidsville. The incident happened last Thursday night at a house on Circle Drive. The officer who responded says the scene was "chaotic" when she arrived. The girl who was shot was found inside the home and later died at a hospital. The circumstances surrounding the shooting haven't been released, nor have the names of those involved because of their ages.

Man in Custody for August Death of Greensboro Woman

(Greensboro, NC) -- A 30-year-old man has been arrested for the shooting death of a woman who died in August. Greensboro Police say Daniel Tyler Goodwin was taken into custody Friday for the death of Ivanna Wilkes, who died at the scene of a shooting in the two-thousand block of O'Brien Street. Goodwin has been charged with first degree murder in the case and is being held without bond.
