Red Wave Carries GOP Representative Ted Budd To D.C.

(Raleigh, NC) -- The GOP still holds North Carolina's Senate seat in Washington. Republican Representative Ted Budd beat out Democrat Cheri Beasley in the U.S. Senate race with more than 50-percent of the vote. Budd's focus on Beasley's "soft on crime" stance while serving as Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court seemed to sway voters in the final months of the election. Budd replaces outgoing U.S. Senator Richard Burr who is retiring after more than two decades in Congress.

Asheville Mayor Manheimer Reelected To Third Term

(Asheville, NC) -- Four more years for Asheville's incumbent mayor Esther Manheimer. With all precincts reporting, Manheimer has defeated city council member Kim Roney with roughly 53-percent of the vote. Manheimer now enters her third term in the office she's held since 2013. She says her focus will be affordable housing, public safety, and the ongoing homelessness issue that has escalated over the latter half of Manheimer's second term.

Asheville-Native Sheriff Miller Wins Second Term

(Buncombe County, NC) -- No change in the office of Buncombe County's top cop. With all precincts reporting, incumbent Sheriff Quentin Miller has handedly beaten Republican challenger Trey McDonald with 60-percent of the vote. The Asheville-native now enters his second term in office. Sheriff Miller's focus will be on improving community relationships and conditions within the jail system.

Asheville City Council Welcomes Newcomer Ullman

(Asheville, NC) -- Unofficial results of Asheville's city council race are in and three open seats are filled. Newcomer Maggie Ullman Berthiaume, who prioritized affordable housing in her campaign, took 22-percent of the vote last night. Meanwhile, incumbents Antanette Mosley and Sheneika Smith secured their seats on council, coming in second and third in the voting respectively. They round out the six-person council that includes Kim Roney who lost in her bid for the mayor's office.

Edwards To Fill District 11's Open House Seat

(Asheville, NC) -- The unofficial results for North Carolina's District 11 race are in. Republican Chuck Edwards has beaten Democrat Jasmine Beach-Ferrara to take the open U.S. House seat. Edwards beat Representative Madison Cawthorn in the primary back in May after Cawthorn's first and only term on Capitol Hill. Edwards has served as a state senator since 2016.

Ted Budd Wins North Carolina Senate

(Raleigh, NC) -- Republican Ted Budd is the winner in the North Carolina race for U.S. Senate. NBC News reports Budd has beaten his Democratic opponent Cheri Beasley by over 51 percent to win. Libertarian Shannon Bray and the Green Party's Matthew Hoh each received about one percent of the vote. Budd has served as a U.S. Representative for North Carolina's 13th District since 2017. He'll replace fellow Republican Richard Burr, who has served in the U.S. Senate since 2005.

Effects of Tropical Storm Nicole to Hit NC Thursday

(Charlotte, NC) -- North Carolina will likely feel the remnants of another storm soon. Forecasters with the National Weather Service say Tropical Storm Nicole is just shy of hurricane status and local impact may include up to three inches of heavy rain by the time she hits the Tar Heel State Thursday. Wind gusts up to 40-miles-per-hour will be possible. The storms will bring in much cooler weather with unseasonably cold weather by Sunday.

Newest NC U.S. Congressional District Seat Officially Filled

(Charlotte, NC) -- The state's newest Congressional district now has a representative to fill its seat. Democrat Jeff Jackson has been declared the winner for the 14th district. He defeated Republican Pat Harrigan to win. The new U.S. House district for North Carolina covers Mecklenburg County's southern and western parts and some of Gaston County.

Elections Drastically Change Makeup of CMS Board of Education

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will soon be welcoming five new members to the Board of Education after Tuesday's elections. Only Thelma Byers-Bailey, the District 2 representative and board vice-chair, will be returning. The other five seats will be replaced by new members. Those will include Melissa Easley in District 1, Gregory "Dee" Rankin, who won the District 3 race, Stephanie Sneed who won in District 4 and District 5 winner Lisa Cline. Also, Summer Nunn beat incumbent Sean Strain in District 6. The new members will be sworn in on December 13th.

North Carolina Christmas Tree Headed to U.S. Capitol

(Charlotte, NC) -- An 80-foot-tall red spruce is making its way across North Carolina and will soon be going to Washington, D.C. The spruce will tour the state before heading north to be displayed in front of the U.S. Capitol. Lifelong tree farmer Larry Smith tells WBTV the Avery County tree was harvested from the Pisgah [[ PIZ·guh ]] National Forest. He also says it's the 100th anniversary of North Carolina trees heading up to adorn the Capitol. The tree lighting ceremony in Washington is set for November 29th.

Tropical Storm Nicole Expected To Move Into Central North Carolina Late Tomorrow Night

(Raleigh, NC) -- The latest model of Tropical Storm Nicole has the system moving across central North Carolina late Thursday night and into Friday morning. The Storm Prediction Center says Nicole could reach hurricane strength before it makes landfall along the east coast of Florida late tonight. The storm system will then turn northward and into the Carolina's bringing with it heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 40-miles per hour across the Triangle. The biggest threat will be rain and flooding, although isolated tornadoes are possible.

Cases Of Pediatric RSV And The Flu Filling Up Hospital Beds Across North Carolina

(Raleigh, NC) -- Hospitals across the state of North Carolina are reporting a shortage in the number of available beds to treat children with RSV and the flu. According to the North Carolina Pediatric Society, Pediatric ICU's are currently around 94-percent full with children suffering from respiratory illnesses. Doctors are attributing the rapid spread of the viruses to kids mingling in day care centers and schools with much less masking than during the height of the COVID epidemic.

(Raleigh, NC) -- Even though no one in North Carolina won the giant two-billion dollar Powerball drawing Monday night, state lottery officials are reporting there were 10-people who did win smaller prizes. They included a 100-thousand dollar winner, eight 50-thousand dollar winners and a one-million dollar ticket that was purchased from a gas station in Wilmington.

Newly Formed Carolina Cowboys Wrap Up Inaugural Professional Bull Riding Season

(Las Vegas, NV) -- The Carolina Cowboys professional bull riders inaugural season came to an end over the weekend. The No. 4 ranked Cowboys fell to No. 3 Oklahoma Freedom, by a 2.25 differential during the second round of the Team Series Championship in Las Vegas. The Carolina Cowboys is one of eight founding professional bull riding teams that competed under Richard Childress Racing. There were 10-events in the inaugural season.

Winston-Salem Native Wins North Carolina Senate Seat

(Raleigh, NC) -- Republican Ted Budd is the winner in North Carolina's race for the U.S. Senate. NBC News reports the Winston-Salem native has beaten his Democratic opponent Cheri Beasley. Beasley, the first Black woman to serve as chief justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court, had been endorsed by former President Barack Obama and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper. Budd is currently serving his third term as a U.S. Representative for North Carolina's 13th District. He'll replace GOP Senator Richard Burr, who is retiring after serving three terms.

Incumbents Kathy Manning, Virginia Foxx To Return To Congressional Districts

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- U.S. Representative Kathy Manning will continue to represent North Carolina's 6th district in Congress. Even though redistricting made the Triad-area seat less Democratic, she won against Republican Christian Castelli Tuesday night with nearly 54 percent of the vote. Virginia Foxx has also handily won re-election in North Carolina's 5th district. The Republican has served the Winston-Salem area since 2005.

Voting Hours Not Extended at Greensboro Precinct

(Greensboro, NC) -- Despite early opening challenges at a polling place in Greensboro, state board of elections officials had opted not to extend voting hours at the location Tuesday. Officials with the Guilford County Board of Elections says the Smith High School polling place opened about 15 minutes late because staff had to be called to unlock the doors. Three other North Carolina precincts that opened at least an hour late each got additional voting time.

GOP Will Have Majority On North Carolina Supreme Court

(Raleigh, NC) -- Democrats will no longer hold a majority on North Carolina's Supreme Court. Republicans only needed to win one seat in Tuesday's voting to retake control of the panel but got two instead. Republican Trey Allen, who's general counsel for the state court system, defeated sitting Democratic Associate Justice Sam Ervin The Fourth. Republican Court of Appeals Judge Richard Dietz defeated Democratic Court of Appeals Judge Lucy Inman for her seat, as well.
