(Asheville, NC) -- The city of Asheville is trying to get to the bottom of its water woes. The city council is creating an independent review committee to identify problems and come up with ways to avoid outages in the future. Thousands of customers were left without water for days surrounding Christmas. The committee will be made up of residential water customers, business customers, water experts and more.

One Dead In Henderson County Fire

(Henderson County, NC) -- The cause of a deadly fire is being investigated in Henderson County. Firefighters say one person was killed when flames swept through a home off Mountain Road near West Henderson High School early Tuesday. Another person made it out safely. The fire is not considered suspicious at this time.

Haywood Schools Running Low On Fund Balance

(Haywood County, NC) -- The savings account for Haywood County Schools is a bit lower than normal. The superintendent told WLOS-TV that higher inflation and lower enrollment has led to a drop to around one-million in reserves. That number normally stands around at least five-million-dollars. The superintendent is planning to pressure state lawmakers for more funding and seek help from county commissioners.

Courthouse Site Approved In Transylvania County

(Transylvania County, NC) -- A new courthouse in Transylvania County is closer to a reality. WLOS-TV says commissioners voted this week to construct the building on land off Morris Road. It will be near the sheriff's office and emergency services headquarters. Estimates from around ten-months ago placed the project at around 44-million-dollars.

Snow Possible After Storms Tomorrow

(Asheville, NC) -- The chance of snow is returning to the Asheville area. Severe storms and gusty winds are possible tomorrow. The school board voted last night on a timeline that includes hiring a search firm to gather candidates next month. In that scenario, the finalists could be ready to interview by the spring. Four Killed Interstate Crash

(Charlotte, NC) -- A Charlotte man is guilty of defrauding North Carolina's Medicaid program. Federal investigators say the suspect and a co-conspirator filed 20-million-dollars in false claims. A jury convicted the man last week of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and money laundering. There's been no sentencing yet.

Body Found In Lincoln County Pond

(Lincoln County, NC) -- A second death is being investigated in Lincoln County. A woman was found shot to death in her front yard along Sherwood Road in Denver Monday. Investigators looked for another person at the scene, but found no one. After deeper search, a body was discovered in a pond near the crime scene. There's no confirmation yet on if the two deaths are related.

Union County Parents Unhappy With Calendar

(Union County, NC) -- Some parents in Union County are showing displeasure with the new school calendar. WSOC-TV reports a group has sued the system after the school board approved the first day next year to be August 9th. State law usually means the first day is a couple of weeks later. The complainants say the school board violated the law on purpose.

Hornets Fall On Road In Toronto

Shots Fired From Car At Two People Walking Down The Street In Durham; Two Suspects Still On The Run

(Durham, NC) -- Police in Durham are searching for the suspects who fired multiple shots from a car at two people who were walking along Blackwell Street near American Tobacco Campus yesterday morning. Investigators say it doesn't appear the drive-by shooting was random. Fortunately, the intended targets were not hurt. Also, the stolen vehicle used in the shooting was recovered after the two men crashed in front of the Aloft Hotel and fled the scene on foot.

No Bond For 18-Year Old Suspect Charged In The Shooting Deaths Of Two Orange County Teenagers Last Fall

(Orange County, NC) -- Bond has been denied for an 18-year old suspect charged with murder in the shooting deaths of two teenagers in Orange County back in September. This, after prosecutors gave graphic details of the brutal slaying in court, arguing that Issiah Ross still poses a danger to the public. They also said that the shooting deaths of 14-year old Lyric Woods and 18-year old Devin Clark, amounted to an execution. Ross's next court appearance is scheduled for June.

Former Girls High School Basketball Coach Facing Multiple Child Sex Crime Charges

(Fayetteville, NC) -- A former Cumberland County girls high school basketball coach has been jailed on multiple child sex crime charges. Sixty year old Thurston Robinson was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with nine counts of sexual battery and six counts of indecent liberties with a student. The alleged crimes took place between 2020 and 2022, while Robinson was the varsity girls basketball coach at Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville.

North Carolina Republican Lawmakers Expected To Try To Ban Tik Tok Early In The 2023 Legislative Session

State Of North Carolina Will Host The 2029 World University Summer Games

(Raleigh, NC) -- The State of North Carolina has been selected to host the 2029 World University Summer Games. The news came yesterday after the Executive Committee of the International University Sports Federation chose the Tar Heel state to host the largest sports competitions in the world for student athletes ages 18-25. The games, which are expected to have an economic impact of around 150-million dollars on the Triangle area, will be held at multiple venues in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary and Greensboro.

Suspect in Custody in Shooting Death of Natasha Walker

(Greensboro, NC) -- Police say a man accused of killing Natasha Walker on New Year's Day was hit by a car just minutes after reportedly he shot her. A Greensboro P-D news release says suspect Vashon Juan Sigler was hit near Cridland Road and Parkway Street. The driver who reportedly hit him is cooperating with police. Walker, a mother of two, also was a business owner in Greensboro and was well-known for helping people through her financial services company.

Triad, Triangle Cities Chosen to Host FISU World University Summer Games

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- North Carolina has won a bid to host the FISU World University Games in six years. The International University Sports Federation games are the largest event for student-athletes, and alternate summer and winter competitions. The President of FISU announced Tuesday that the state has been awarded the summer games for 2029. The competitions will be centered in a region stretching from Raleigh to Greensboro and encompassing the Triangle and Triad areas. The FISU World University Summer Games have only been held once previously in the U.S. - in Buffalo in 1993.

Two Roommates Stabbed In Winston-Salem Home

(Winston-Salem, NC) - A 48-year-old man is in critical condition and a 38-year-old woman is also in the hospital after police say they were stabbed by a roommate. Officers were called to a home in the 400 block of East 16th Street Monday night to find the two suffering from stab wounds and cuts. William Cundiff Junior, who is 60, was taken into custody. He also lived at the house and reportedly attacked his roommates during a fight.

Triad Republicans Appointed to Head Committees in General Assembly

(Raleigh, NC) -- Several area Republican lawmakers have been appointed to head committees in the General Assembly for the new legislative session. State Senator Joyce Krawiec of Kernersville is one of three chairs on two powerful committees: the Health Care Committee and the Pensions and Retirement and Aging Committee. Senator Amy Galey, who is from Burlington, also has been appointed as co-chair of the Education/Higher Education Committee. A statement from her office says she's serving on a total of six committees.

Duke Men's Tennis Season Gets Underway

( Durham, NC) -- Duke men's tennis head coach Ramsey Smith says the team is doing well as its spring schedule gets underway. The team is in Honolulu, Hawaii, for the Hawaii Invitational, facing off against California and Hawaii. The players will return home for three matches against Memphis that begin next Friday. They'll go up against North Carolina Central two days after that. Both matches will be played at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
