Fire At Asheville Outlets Investigated

(Asheville, NC) -- A fire at the Asheville Outlets is being investigated. WLOS-TV reports firefighters rushed to the roof around the Restoration Hardware and Carter's Outlet last night. It seems sprinklers were able to contain the damage, while no injuries were reported. There's no word yet on what may have caused the fire.

Canine Flu Cases Subside In Asheville

(Asheville, NC) -- Cases of the canine flu are dwindling in Asheville. The humane society opened this week for the first time since early December due to an outbreak that affected over 100 dogs. All adoption fees are now being waived this week at the Asheville Humane Society. Around 115 dogs tested positive for the flu at the end of the year. All adoption fees have been waived for the time being.

String Of Burglaries Investigated

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are looking for the suspect behind a string of burglaries. Three businesses along Haywood Road in west Asheville were targeted last weekend. Investigators told WLOS-TV several hundred dollars was taken. The suspect has already been taken into custody. He's been linked to other burglaries in the River Arts District.

State Purchases Land For Pisgah Park

(Asheville, NC) -- Pisgah View State Park is growing. The state has purchased 230-acres of land in an effort to expand the park in Buncombe County. WLOS-TV reports another 200-acres is also in the works.

Tons Of Trash Picked Up From Asheville Homeless Sites

(Buncombe County, NC) -- Trash from vacant homeless camps in Buncombe County are adding up. Eight volunteers helped pick up 120-thousand-pounds of trash from Department of Transportation property at two sites earlier this month. Four dump trucks were filled with garbage. Campers were given notice up to two-weeks ahead of time before the clean-up started.

Deaths Investigated In McDowell County

(McDowell County, NC) -- The deaths of two people are being investigated in McDowell County. A couple was found dead inside a home in the Sugar Hill-Montford Cove area last weekend. The cause of deaths is underway, but nothing appears suspicious at this time.

Severe Weather Possible For Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- The greater Charlotte area is being threatened by severe thunderstorms. Damaging wind gusts of at least 40-miles-an-hour are possible when the system hits the Queen City area later today. Heavy rain and isolated tornadoes are also possible into the overnight hours. Significant snow is expected in higher elevations of western North Carolina.

Lenoir Man Arrested After Child Found With Burns

(Lenoir, NC) -- A Lenoir man is facing serious trouble for injuries to his young son. Investigators say the one-year-old was rushed to the hospital after suffering third-degree burns from hot bath water this week. Burns reportedly covered close to a third of his body. The baby's father was arrested for felony child abuse, inflicting serious injury.

Shooting Investigated In Gastonia

(Gastonia, NC) -- An apparent homicide is being investigated in Gastonia. Officers responded to a home on West Sixth Avenue late Wednesday night. One person was found shot to death. There's no word yet on whether any suspects were arrested or not.

Seniors Still Without Apartments Due To Water Problems

(Charlotte, NC) -- Some Charlotte seniors are still not able to return home due to water problems. WBTV reports residents of the Magnolia Senior Apartment complex are having to live elsewhere while plumbing is being repaired due to busted water pipes. It's a problem that's been going on since Christmas Day. The city of Charlotte is helping the seniors find a place to stay the rest of the month.

No Charges For Officers In Mall Shooting

(Charlotte, NC) -- No charges will be filed against officers in a deadly mall shooting in Concord. A 23-year-old Charlotte man was killed by officers after he reportedly refused to put down a gun at Concord Mills in late August. He was considered a suspect in a theft from inside the mall. The Cabarrus County district attorney's office says those officers involved won't face charges.

Hornets Back On Court In Toronto

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Hornets get another shot at the Raptors today. Charlotte is on the road to take on Toronto, which just defeated the Hornets a few nights ago. It's been a struggle all season for Charlotte, which has just won three of its last 20 games.

Suspect Jailed On Charges Of Sexual Battery Following Alleged Attack On The Campus Of NC State

(Raleigh, NC) -- Police in Raleigh have arrested a suspect in connection with an alleged sexual assault on the campus of NC State yesterday. It happened shortly after 8:am at 102-Logan Court. A female student claims the man, identified as 26-year old William Patrick Ianine, approached her and made an inappropriate comment and also touched her inappropriately. Ianine was taken into custody and charged with sexual battery.

Wendell Daycare Center Under Investigation For Alleged Sex Crimes Against Children

(Wendell, NC) -- State authorities have launched an investigation into allegations of child sex crimes at a daycare center in Wendell. According to the State Bureau of Investigation, the case involves a worker at ABC Land Daycare on Raymond Drive and three 3-year old children who were entrusted into their care. So-far, no charges have been filed.

HHS Reports COVID-19 Cases Are Down But Wastewater Particles Are Up

(Raleigh, NC) -- The latest COVID-19 key metrics released by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, showed a decrease of more than 25-hundred new cases within the last week. However, the number of COVID particles found in wastewater was up by 68-percent, for an estimated 82-million. The report also said more than 16-hundred people in the state were treated at hospitals for COVID related illnesses.

NOVO Nordisk Makes A Six Million Dollar Donation To Durham Tech Community College

(Durham, NC) -- Pharmaceutical giant NOVO Nordisk has announced the awarding of a 6-million dollar grant to Durham Technical Community College, the largest single corporate donation in the school's history. At a news conference Wednesday, global health company said the money would be used to support the College's new Life Science Training Center, the establishment of a biotechnology degree program and on-site job training.

Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson Addresses Growing Problem Of Violent Crime In The City

(Raleigh, NC) -- The Raleigh Police Department held a news conference Wednesday to address the growing problem of violent crime in the city. Chief Estella Patterson said there was a 50-percent increase in homicides during the fourth quarter of 2022, which brought the yearly total to 49. Of particular concern was 30 aggravated assaults that were attributed to juveniles gaining access to guns. The data also showed 386 firearms were stolen from cars. Patterson said her Department is working to increase patrols in high crime areas and to hire more police officers.

Heavy Rain, Storms Likely for Thursday Night

(Greensboro, NC) -- Forecasters say another weather pattern change is in store for the Triad later today. Officials at the National Weather Service say a cold front is expected to arrive in the area by Thursday night that will bring a 70 percent chance of heavy rain as well as, lightning, strong winds up to 60 miles per hour and a low tornado threat. The remaining showers will linger through early Friday morning before the front moves out of the area.

Final Section of Urban Loop in Greensboro to Open Soon

(Greensboro, NC) -- The final leg of a highway that will connect all sections of Greensboro is set to open a week from Monday. Officials with the state transportation department say the Greensboro Urban Loop will see its first drivers January 23rd after ten years of construction and some 500-million-dollars in building costs. The final part of the roadway stretches from North Elm Street to Highway 29.

Two Charged with Vandalizing Confederate Gravesites in Surry County

(Mt. Airy, NC) -- A man and a woman are facing charges in Surry County for allegedly vandalizing graves of Confederate soldiers. The county sheriff's office says Travis William Barker and Tina Louise Lowe are charged with felony counts of disturbing a grave marker. The cemetery where the damage was done is in a woody area off the highway near Lowgap, which is in Franklin Township.

PTI Passengers Affected by FAA Ground Stop

(Greensboro, NC) -- Officials with PTI Airport say flights should be almost completely normal Thursday. That's after many were delayed Wednesday following a nationwide ground stop that was issued by the FAA. Federal authorities say the action was taken temporarily while they fixed a glitch in a computer system that pilots have to use before taking off. The biggest issue for many Greensboro travelers seemed to be with them not taking off in time to catch connecting flights in other cities.

Wake Forest Outscores Florida State at Home

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Florida State's men's basketball team has proven to be no match for Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons outscored the Seminoles 90 to 75 in play Wednesday night at Lawrence Joel Stadium. Wake's Cameron Hildreth scored a game-high 23 points.
