Florida Murder Suspect Arrested In WNC

(Rutherford County, NC) -- A Florida murder suspect is in Rutherford County jail. Investigators told WLOS-TV the man wrecked a car off Main Street in Ellenboro after a chase yesterday. He was reportedly inside the vehicle of a missing 74-year-old man from Florida. Rutherford County's sheriff says the suspect is also wanted in North Carolina for probation charges.

State's Lowest Unemployment Is In Asheville

(Buncombe County, NC) -- Unemployment in Asheville and Buncombe County is lower than anywhere else in the state. Numbers from the North Carolina Department of Commerce show jobless rates at just two-and-a-half-percent in December. The state's highest rate is Tyrell County at more than seven-percent.

Suspects Arrested In Deadly Fire Case

(Rutherford County, NC) -- The case of two toddler deaths in Rutherford County is continuing. Investigators say a mother and grandfather were charged with involuntary manslaughter after fire killed two kids at a home in Bostic around three-weeks ago. The sheriff's office reported the mother turned herself in yesterday, while the grandfather was arrested the day before.

Cawthorn Settles Traffic Ticket

(Haywood County, NC) -- A former western North Carolina Congressman is settling some traffic offenses. Madison Cawthorn racked up four tickets between 2017 and 2021. He pleaded guilty to the latest speeding ticket with a reduced speed under what he was accused of. The Citizen-Times reports Cawthorn is still facing a misdemeanor charge for allegedly bringing a gun to Charlotte-Douglas International Airport last year.

Suspect Arrested In Asheville NYE Shooting

(Asheville, NC) -- A second suspect is facing charges in an Asheville New Year's Eve shooting. A man was shot in the early morning hours of December 31st on New Leicester Highway. The first suspect was arrested in mid-January. The 30-year-old man arrested this week is facing reckless driving, fleeing and gun charges.

New Homicide Class Offered At Western Carolina

(Cullowhee, NC) -- The SBI is teaming up with Western Carolina University for a class. Students will have the option of taking a course this summer which covers a cold case homicide investigation. The class will initially start virtually, but it may still move into the physical classroom.

Woman Charged After Baby Found Dead In Richmond County

(Richmond County, NC) -- A woman is facing charges in the death of a baby in Richmond County. The child was discovered dead near railroad tracks in East Rockingham last week. Investigators arrested a 27-year-old woman yesterday for murder. She's being held without bond.

Company Bringing 50 Jobs To Pineville

(Pineville, NC) -- A furnace supplier is bringing jobs to Pineville. Elnik Systems is investing more than three-million-dollars at a facility in the Carolina Logistics Park. More than 50 jobs will be added with an average salary of over 60-thousand-dollars.

Gas Prices Steady In Charlotte

Triple-A reported this morning that the cost for a gallon of regular unleaded is at three-31, which is the median across North Carolina. The price has dropped three-cents over the past week. Despite that, the price of gas in Charlotte has seen a huge jump of more than 30-cents in the last month.

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is continuing to look for the suspect in a southeast Charlotte homicide. A man was killed in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Pineburr Road late Wednesday night. Investigators say the victim was killed intentionally. It marked the 11th homicide in Charlotte so far this year.

Lee County Man Charged With Murder After Dead Body Found Stuffed In A Can On His Property

(Lee County, NC) -- A Lee County man was arrested Thursday, after human remains were found on his property, stuffed inside barrel filled with concrete. The discovery was made Tuesday by sheriff's deputies who spent several days searching the property for Michael Bradley Cox, who had been missing since December. Forty two year old Jackie Lamar Bright, a known drug dealer, was charged with murder.

School Bus Crash In Lee County Injures Four Students

(Lee County, NC) -- An investigation is underway into a school bus crash in Lee County, that injured four students, leaving one hospitalized in serious condition. In happened around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday along Lemon Springs Road near Sanford. Authorities say the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and ran into a ditch, causing the bus to overturn. She has been charged with failure to maintain lane control.

(Raleigh, NC) -- The North Carolina Department of Insurance has been asked to approve a request to increase car insurance premiums by over 28-percent. In its filing earlier this week, the North Carolina Rate Bureau, which represents insurance companies, did not specify a reason for proposing the substantial rate hike. Industry analysts are predicting an eight-point-four percent increase nationally.

A Reported Cool Down Could Mean Lower Rent Prices Across North Carolina

According to Realtor.com, the year-over-year growth rate during the month of December, was the lowest it's been in two years. Man Suffers Medical Emergency And Crashes Into A Walmart Store In Franklin County

(Louisburg, NC) -- Shoppers at a Walmart in Franklin County are thankful there were no injuries after an SUV crashed into the front entrance of the store last night. It happened around 8 p.m. at the Walmart Superstore on Retail Drive in Louisburg. First responders say the driver of the vehicle suffered a seizure, which resulted in the accident. The adult male was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. No word on his condition.

Sheriff's Officers Involved in Shooting

(Greensboro, NC) -- A man who was involved in a standoff has reportedly fired at deputies from the Guilford County Sheriff's Office. One person, who has not been identified, has been taken to the hospital. Officials say the shooting happened while the deputies were serving a search warrant at a home on Beatle Drive Thursday afternoon. Officers forced their way inside after the person wouldn't let them in and found the man pointing a gun at them. Deputies shot him and took him into custody after a nearly three-hour standoff. Officials haven't said what the initial search was about.

Aerospace Company in W-S to Close for Consolidation

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A company that contracts for aerospace work for both commercial and government interests is closing down its facility in Winston-Salem. Company officials at Collins Aerospace said Thursday that it will consolidate operations at its West Point facility with its existing Winston-Salem Fairchild and Oak Plaza plants. Both of those facilities as well as one in Northern Ireland will continue operations. A statement from the company says Collins Aerospace is committed to ensuring that its employees are treated respectfully throughout the transition.

Former Volunteer Coach Charged with Sending Sexual Texts to Student

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- The Forsyth County Sheriff's office has charged a former volunteer coach with sending sexual messages to a student. The sheriff's office said Brandon Mock, who is 37 and from Winston-Salem, was arrested Wednesday. Investigators said a school resource officer at Glenn High School received a tip that Mock was sending messages to a juvenile. He was arrested after investigators say they uncovered evidence against him. The district says Mock, who was a volunteer assistant men's basketball coach, has been suspended from his duties.

Father Says 8YO Shooting Victim Still Critical

(Greensboro, NC) -- An eight-year-old girl who was shot in her bed last Wednesday is still in critical condition. Michael Hinton says surgery is scheduled for his daughter Aacuria Friday and from that they're hoping to learn what other help she may need. Police believe the little girl was hit by stray bullets that were fired outside her home on Autumn Drive. Her father is begging for anyone with information about the incident to call police, saying anyone who's met her knows how special she is.
