Eblen Charities' Bill Murdock steps down to retire

Bill Murdock is stepping down as the leader of the charity he co-founded three decades ago.

Murdock is the focus of a CNN story detailing the circumstances surrounding his guilty plea to a charge of indecent liberties with a minor. The accusation, charge, and plea all occurred prior to the formation of Eblen Charities. Murdock says he took the plea deal because he could not afford the legal expenses required to fight the charge. Over the years, when the question comes up, he says the girl's mother wanted to sleep with him and when he refused she had her teenage daughter make a false accusation. The mother and daughter both deny this.

The story also seems to hint (while not offering any evidence) that he has enriched himself through his charity work. It also alleges that Murdock has exaggerated his educational credentials and awards.

The Board of Directors at Eblen Charities met last evening in a regularly-scheduled meeting, and released a statement shortly after 9:00 a.m. this morning:

"On March 21, 2019, Bill Murdock announced his retirement as Executive Director of Eblen Charities. He will assist the organization during the transition to interim leadership. The Board expresses its appreciation for Bill’s many years of dedicated service to Eblen Charities and the people of Western North Carolina."
