Trump Impeachment Trial Begins As Articles Formally Presented To Senate

Senate Begins Pre-Trial Impeachment Proceedings

The articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump are now in the hands of U.S. senators, marking the formal start of the trial. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, who is serving as the lead manager for the prosecution, read the two articles aloud in the Senate chambers.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts will preside over the impeachment trial, and the Senate will take care of procedural matters over the course of the next few days. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he expects the trial to start "in earnest" on Tuesday (January 21).

Trump was impeached by the House last month for abusing power and obstructing Congress in the investigation of the Ukraine scandal. The Senate trial will determine if he is removed from office.
