As the state unemployment rate ticked up for January, so did the local numbers. State commerce officials say the unemployment rate increased month-to-month in every county in Western North Carolina. Buncombe County still maintains the state's lowest rate, at 4.3% for January. Haywood County's rate was 5.3% for January. Madison's was 5.6%.
