Cherokee Tribal Council Approves Marijuana Referendum

(Qualla Boundary, NC) -- The Cherokee Tribal Council is looking for input from the community on marijuana legislation. The board recently approved a referendum question to make pot legal on tribal lands for adults 21-and-over. Medical cannabis is already allowed.

Camping Ban Extended At Max Patch

(Madison County, NC) -- A camping ban is being extended at a popular spot in Madison County. The U.S. Forest Service says a closure at Max Patch will run for another three-years in order to protect the site from destructive human use. Camping and campfire use was initially prohibited starting two-years ago due to damages in the area. A district ranger says the trails have been recovering and litter has decreased in the meantime.

Asheville Public Pool Re-Opens

(Asheville, NC) -- A public pool is back open in Asheville again for the summer. Gutter system repairs are now complete at the Recreation Park Pool next to the Western North Carolina Nature Center. The pool re-opened on Saturday, and will remain open every day of the week until the end of summer.

Crime Numbers Drop In Hendersonville

(Hendersonville, NC) -- Crime numbers are down in Hendersonville. The police department reports larcenies, drug offenses and criminal arrests in general have dropped roughly half from 2022 through the first six-months of the year. On the other end, traffic stops and citations have risen. The police chief said the city's older population helps keep crime low.

Trail Work Begins At DuPont Forest

(Henderson County, NC) -- Work is beginning today to improve file-miles of trails in western North Carolina. The U.S. Forest Service says improvements will cover DuPont State Recreational Forest beginning today in Henderson and Transylvania counties. The area is the most visited state forest in North Carolina. There's no word on how long the repairs will last.

Drowning Reported At Lake Norman

(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- A drowning is being reported at Lake Norman. Search crews were called out to a sand bar in the Cornelius area late Sunday afternoon. The body was found roughly six-hours later. The circumstances behind the drowning are being investigated.

Alterations Made To Huntersville Resort Project

(Huntersville, NC) -- Big changes are in store for a proposed resort development in Huntersville. The developer for the Lagoona Bay project decided in a new plan to call the project Waterside instead. A hotel, convention center and more than 200 condos have been eliminated from the development. Town staff will be able to review the design in the next two-months.

Two Injured In Alexander City Flooding

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigated a double-shooting in the University City area. Officers say two people were injured in a shooting on Laysan Teal Lane last night. One victim's injuries are considered life-threatening. There's been no arrest.

Woman Found Dead After Alexander County Flooding

(Alexander County, NC) -- The search for a missing woman who disappeared during flooding in Alexander County is over. The 49-year-old was found dead yesterday roughly two-miles from where she was last seen on Dover Church Road late Saturday night. She was reportedly swept away in flood waters, which was caused by more than seven-inches of rain locally.

NC House Speaker Won't Seek Seat Again

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina's Speaker of the House is not planning on seeking out the position again. Tim Moore revealed last week that this term will be his last for as House Speaker in the state, but he hasn't ruled out a run for political office. The Republican was first elected Speaker eight-years ago.

(Charlotte, NC) -- The winless streak for Charlotte FC is continuing. The black-and-blue fell two-nothing at Montreal Saturday night. The last time Charlotte won a match came May 27 against the L.A. Search For Missing North Carolina Girl Believed To Have Been Taken From Virginia By Her Mother

(Raleigh, NC) -- Authorities in Virginia have issued a Missing/Endangered Child Alert for a three-year old North Carolina girl, believed to have been abducted by her biological mother. According to Virginia State Police, the child identified as Samalea Daniels, was first reported missing on June 20th by her father, who lives in Mecklenburg County. The father also has legal custody of the girl. Investigators say the toddler may be traveling with 29-year Tanna Mila Daniels, described as being about 5-feet-6 inches tall, 130 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. She was last seen driving a gray colored 2011 Ford Escape with Virginia license plates. Anyone with information is asked to contact Virginia State Police.

Man Surrenders To Fayetteville Police After 12-Hour Armed Standoff

(Fayetteville, NC) -- A man was jailed after staging a 12-hour long armed standoff with Fayetteville police. The incident began around 8:30 pm Saturday, at a home on Desmond and Baldoon Drives in the Loch Lomond neighborhood. Authorities say the suspect, described as a military veteran undergoing a mental heath crisis, barricaded himself inside the house and exchanged gunshots with police several times before he was wounded and finally surrendered Sunday afternoon. Neighbors told police the mental health crisis was triggered by Fourth of July fireworks.

Durham Police Warn Latin X Community About A Series Of Recent Armed Robberies

(Durham, NC) -- Durham police are investigating a string of armed robberies involving Hispanic victims over the past two weeks. Records show there were at least 12-robberies of Latin X people in the Durham area between July 1st and July 11th. Investigators say in most cases, the victims were followed home after leaving Hispanic businesses on Guess Road near Avondale Drive Foushee Street. In each incident thieves took cash, debit cards and cell phones at gunpoint. Police are asking people in the Latin X community to be aware of their surroundings.

Motorcyclist Dies After Crashing Into Rear Of Pickup Truck In Fayetteville

(Fayetteville, NC) -- A motorcyclist was killed in a traffic crash in Fayetteville yesterday. According to the accident report, two motorcycles were weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed on Raeford Road, when one of them slammed into the rear of a stopped pickup truck. The victim, identified as Luther Tyner, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger on back of the bike was rushed to a nearby hospital and treated for unspecified injuries. He was last reported to be in stable condition.

House Speaker Tim Moore Confirms He Won't Seek Re-election In 2024

(Raleigh, NC) -- Republican House Speaker Tim Moore has announced he will not run for another term in the 2024 elections. Moore confirmed on Friday, that he made the decision before the 2022 general election and that he had already informed many of his colleagues in the General Assembly of his intentions. Last month, Moore became the center of controversy, when a former member of the Apex Town Council filed a lawsuit against him, claiming an affair he had with his wife contributed to the breakup of his marriage. That suit was later dropped.

Durham Bulls Beat The St. Paul Saints In Best Of Three Series

(St. Paul, MN) -- The Durham Bulls won the final match of a three-game series 5-3 against the St. Paul Saints yesterday. With the score all tied at 3-3 at the top of the ninth inning at CHS Field, the Bulls drove in two runs to go ahead and hold on for the victory. The game was highlighted by Bulls first baseman Austin Shenton, who was just called up three days ago, smashed the first Triple-A home runs of his career off former Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel at the top of the sixth. Teen In Custody After Another Teen Shot To Death In High Point

(High Point, NC) -- A teen is facing a manslaughter charge after another teen was killed in a shooting in High Point. Police say officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call Friday night at a home on the northwest side of the city. Officers found a 14-year-old with a gunshot wound. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene and a 16-year-old was taken into custody. Detectives determined the gun involved in the incident was accidentally fired.

One Dead In Greensboro Shooting

(Greensboro, NC) -- An investigation is underway following a deadly shooting in Greensboro. Police say officers found Uriel Jiminez with a gunshot wound yesterday morning in the 300 block of Hideaway Court. He was taken to the hospital, where he died. His death is being investigated as a homicide and no arrests have been made.

Search Underway For Missing Teen In Winston-Salem

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Authorities are searching for a teen who went missing in Winston-Salem. Police say 16-year-old Jahnill Pond was last seen yesterday and is believed to have walked away from his home in the four-thousand block of Meredith Woods Lane. Pond is autistic but will respond to his name if you call out to him. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Three Teens Accused Of Stealing Car In Graham

(Graham, NC) -- A trio of teens are accused of stealing a car in Graham over the weekend. Police say a person had his car stolen Friday in the area of Providence Road near the Burlington city limits. Police followed three 14-year-olds, who jumped out of the car at a dead end on Climax Street and ran from the scene. All three were arrested on multiple charges.

Officers Apprehend Snake At Graham Home

(Graham, NC) -- The Graham police department is revealing its officers responded to an unusual trespassing call over the weekend. The officers were called out Saturday night by someone who said a trespasser got inside their home and entered the bathroom. The trespasser turned out to be a snake. Officers cleared the home and after a brief standoff, the snake was apprehended without further incident.
