Woman Loses Parents And Home Within A Week
A Buncombe County woman who recently lost her parents in a deadly accident is now without a home. A Saturday morning fire destroyed the home of Gwen Goldthwaite in Candler. Her parents, Roger and Judy Rector, both died from injuries in a crash a little more than a week ago. A man has been charged with DWI and death by vehicle in the accident. Gwen was at work with her husband when the fire swept through the home.
Billy Graham Statue A Possibility In D.C.
A statue of the Reverend Billy Graham may soon stand among others in the U.S. Capitol. North Carolina legislators previously approved of a statue to replace that of former Governor Charles Aycock in the National Statuary Hall Collection. Federal rules previously prohibited the Graham statue because the individual must be deceased. The action must now get congressional approval. One chief of staff of a U.S. representative from North Carolina says it shouldn't be a problem.
City Of Asheville Wants Body Cam Footage Released
The City of Asheville is seeking to have more body camera footage released in the beating of an accused jaywalker. Video footage leaked to the Citizen-Times is reported to be from last August and shows a former officer beating Jonnie Jermaine Rush. Asheville Police Chief Tammy Hooper says the video isn't for public record and its release was illegal. The city's petition requests the Buncombe County Superior Court to release any recordings.
Andrews Man Arrested For Second-Degree Murder
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office says an Andrews man has been charged with second-degree murder in a deadly shooting. Authorities say James Taylor the Second was caught in Murphy after fleeing the scene. The 911 Center earlier received a call about a woman being shot in Andrews. Taylor is in the Murphy County Detention Center with no bond set.
Teen Charged With Threats Against School
A high school student accused of making threats against students at Rugby Middle School is in jail following his first court appearance yesterday. The Henderson County Sheriff's Department says the suspect sent the threats through direct messaging on Instagram. He reportedly has a history of trouble. The student pleaded guilty to having a knife at school last year.
Teacher Salaries Increase In N.C.
The salary for North Carolina teachers in on the rise. The average hit above 50-thousand-dollars for the first time in 2017. The Department of Public Instruction reports the average salary of 51-thousand-214-dollars ranks fifth among Southeastern states. Most of the salary is provided through the state, but a portion does come from local funding.
TSA Finds Loaded Pistol At Charlotte-Douglas
TSA officials say a passenger was caught with a loaded gun at a Charlotte-Douglas airport security checkpoint yesterday. The loaded pistol and extra magazine were found as the passenger's bag went through the conveyor belt. It is reportedly the 13th gun found at Charlotte-Douglas this year. The man was charged with carrying a weapon on airport property.
Hackers Hit Catawba County Computer Records
Catawba County says computer hackers may have infiltrated health insurance records last fall. The county is sending warning letters out to almost ten-thousand people advising them of the compromise. While there is no indication that any information has been used by the hackers, the county did say that 187 people were directly affected. Those include the county manager and assistant county manager. Officials say they have strengthened the system's cyber-security.
Bullet Strikes Driver's Face
Investigators are trying to figure out exactly where a bullet came from that struck a driver in the face on I-85. Jhonatan Fuentes was traveling in a pickup truck with his brother near Sugar Creek Road when the bullet came through the windshield and hit his cheek. He was able to pull over to the side of the interstate safely. Fuentes was taken to CMC-Main for minor injuries.
Bojangles' Looking For New CEO
The CEO of Charlotte-based Bojangles' is stepping down from his position. Clifton Rutledge says after four years on the job, he wants to spend more time with family. Taking over in the interim position is former CEO Randy Kibler. Board director William Kussell said Kibler's leadership as previous president will help the transition into the search and naming of a permanent CEO.
