Camp Ranger Dies In ATV Crash (Canton, NC)
A camp ranger involved in an ATV crash at a Canton camp is dead. The Haywood County Sheriff's Office says 57-year-old Michael Nelson died yesterday morning at Camp Daniel Boone. He was the only person on the ATV. The sheriff's office has not yet released details on what happened.
Former Hickory Officer Indicted For Assault (Hickory, NC)
A former Hickory police officer is facing indictments for allegedly assaulting a woman as he attempted to take her into custody in 2013. Former Sergeant Robert George says the woman fell to the pavement, but the indictment revealed that he slammed the woman to the ground while she was handcuffed. The Hickory Police Department fired him in 2014 after an internal investigation. George was arrested yesterday following the federal indictment.
Asheville Homicide Total Now Above 2017 (Asheville, NC)
A deadly shooting at Lee Walker Heights over the weekend brings the number of homicides in Asheville up to eight for the year. That number surpasses all of 2017, when seven were reported. Asheville Police are still searching for the suspect accused of shooting 21-year-old Devon Harvin. One other person was shot and was last listed in stable condition.
Governor Continues WNC Visit Today (Asheville, NC)
Governor Roy Cooper continues his visit of Western North Carolina today in Marshall. He will be at Madison High School to discuss his Hometown Strong initiative to strengthen rural communities. Following that will be a stop at Liberty Middle School in Morganton. He and his staff made stops at several locations yesterday, including one at TC Roberson High School in Asheville to discuss his 130-million-dollar school safety budget.
Arrests Made In Henderson County Break-Ins (Henderson County, NC)
The Henderson County Sheriff's Office is seeking to return property to victims of recent car break-ins. Four suspects were taken into custody for stealing items out of unlocked cars in the High Vista, River Stone and The Glens of Aberdeen subdivisions. They were reportedly caught in the act last week in Hendersonville. Anyone with items missing is asked to call the sheriff's office.
Responders Prepare In Mock Train Collision (Swain County, NC)
First responders in Swain County are now trained in dealing with train collisions. A section of the railway near the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City was the site of a mock disaster drill yesterday. The scenario was a full mock-up of a real accident that happened last summer, when a train hit a charter bus. Yesterday's drill was a bit different, with the bus overturned on its side and the train only carrying volunteer passengers for the exercise.
High School Student Arrested For Murder (Charlotte, NC)
The CMPD says a Charlotte high school student was arrested yesterday for murder charges related to a shooting last Friday. Police arrested the 15-year-old at Garringer High School and found him in possession of a gun on campus. The teen is one of three suspects facing charges in the death of Eskinder Asefaw, who was shot at the Central Square Apartments on Wembley Drive. The school also sent out a message to parents about the weapon on campus and urged them to speak with their kids about it.
