Buncombe Seeking Almost One-Million Dollars From Greene (Buncombe County, NC)
Buncombe County is seeking nearly one-million-dollars from its former county manager. A lien has been filed against Wanda Greene's state credit union account to take back money she used on illegal life insurance policies. Her account has already been frozen during the federal investigation. Commission Chairman Brownie Newman says the money needs to go back to taxpayers.
Legislators Pushing Through State Amendments (Raleigh, NC)
The General Assembly is considering adding up to six constitutional amendments to the November ballot in North Carolina. Governor Roy Cooper said during a visit to Asheville yesterday that they are being pushed through too quickly. One of those amendments includes a mandate to lower the maximum income tax rate. The governor feels the cap could end up restricting public education funding.
Murder Investigated In Cherokee (Cherokee, NC)
Cherokee Police are investigating the death of a man they believe was murdered last weekend. One person is in custody during the investigation of 57-year-old Steve Queen's death. His sister says he was beaten to death.
Asheville Reviewing Plans For Ten-Story Building (Asheville, NC)
A new ten-story high rise may be coming to downtown Asheville. The city says plans have been submitted for a mixed-use building called Parisian Residence that will sit next to downtown's Central United Methodist Church. The building is expected to house hotel rooms, condos and commercial businesses.
Inmate Calls Assault Victim Over 200 Times (Buncombe County, NC)
A Buncombe County inmate is being accused of calling the woman he assaulted more than 200 times from jail. Lewie Robinson has been serving time for punching and slapping the woman. She says Robinson has now called her on 28 different days over the past four months from jail, including as many as eleven times last Sunday. Deputies served him with 28 arrest warrants for violating a domestic violence protective order.
New Courthouse Put On Hold In Brevard (Transylvania County, NC)
Plans for building a new courthouse are on hold in Brevard. Transylvania County Commissioners decided to halt the 31-million-dollar project slated outside of downtown after receiving public input. The new courthouse would come with a two-and-a-half cent tax increase. Rehab work is still expected to continue on the existing historic courthouse in downtown Brevard.
Health Officials Urge Hepatitis A Vaccinations (Charlotte, NC)
Customers of a local Hardee's restaurant are being urged to receive a hepatitis A vaccination as soon as possible. An employee at the Little Rock Road location in west Charlotte reportedly brought the illness into the restaurant. Up to four-thousand people who ordered at the restaurant between June 13th and 23rd may have been exposed. The location has voluntarily shut down.
