One Dead In Overnight Shooting (Asheville, NC)
Asheville Police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened just before midnight. Officers found a female dead inside a car across from the Bartlett Arms Apartments near the French Broad River. A man was rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Police are searching for the shooter.
Missing Boy's Mother Urges Public's Help (Gastonia, NC)
The mother of a missing Gastonia boy with special needs is urging the public's help in the search. Anyone who was in the Rankin Lake Park area last Saturday has been asked to call Gastonia Police. Maddox Ritch disappeared while he was walking around the lake with his father. Police Chief Robert Helton said investigators have followed up on more than 150 leads.
Former Legislator Marie Colton Dies (Buncombe County, NC)
A former state legislator from Asheville who became North Caroline's first female Speaker Pro Tem is dead. Marie Colton was 95. She served in the House of Representatives for Buncombe County from 1978 to 1994. State Representative Susan Fisher told WLOS-TV that Colton made it possible for women to serve.
Animal Sanctuary Fined (Madison County, NC)
The owner of a Madison County animal sanctuary is facing fines. The county says Glenn Fried of Safari Edventure must have the property rezoned from residential to commercial. The sanctuary now owes seven-thousand-dollars in alleged violations and the number continues to grow. Fried says he believes the county is overreacting to some neighbors who fear the animals may escape.
Mars Hill Arson Charges Dropped (Madison County, NC)
Charges are being dropped against a man accused of setting a house on fire in Mars Hill. The district attorney's office says there was insufficient evidence to pursue the charges against 43-year-old Christopher Carver. He said the investigation has damaged his business and finances. The fire destroyed his mother's home on Phillips Valley Road last October.
Body Cam Footage Released In Transparency Effort (Asheville, NC)
Buncombe County's district attorney says body cam footage of an officer-involved shooting was released yesterday in order to show transparency. Members of the media were able to watch video of what led up to the shooting in May, which showed a man charge at an Asheville Police officer with a box cutter at a motel. The officer shot the man, who survived and was later sentenced to prison.
