More than two-million people cast early ballots in North Carolina, which is well above the one-point-one-million cast early in the last midterm. Tuesday's midterm elections could lead to sweeping changes to North Carolina's Constitution. There are half-a-dozen amendments to the state constitution this year. Election officials say voters have been turning out in large numbers, especially considering it's a "blue moon" midterm with no statewide marquee offices on the ballot.
Tillis: We Won't Only Hold Majority, We'll Add To It (Washington, DC)
A North Carolina Senator believes the GOP will continue to add to its majority control. Republican Thom Tillis said on Fox News yesterday that states such as North Dakota, Indiana and Missouri are moving in favor of the Republicans, stating the incumbents have had a successful campaign. He said there may be a special election in Mississippi that could take some additional time to sort out, but he said he's "confident" there will be a Republican returning to office in that state.
Former Basketball Coach Sues School (Asheville, NC)
A former girls basketball coach in Buncombe County is suing the school that fired him. Joe Carrington claims Carolina Day was in breach of contract when he was let go in October and he's now seeking 25-thousand-dollars in damages. Carolina Day said in a letter to parents that Carrington was fired so the basketball team could be more in line with the school's beliefs. The Wildcats won their eighth straight state championship earlier this year.
Two Face Felony Assault Charges In Mars Hill (Mars Hill, NC)
Two suspects are facing felony charges in a Mars Hill assault. One person was rushed to Mission Hospital after being found on the side of the road on Saturday. Details on exactly what happened haven't been released by the Madison County Sheriff's Office. The two suspects were being held on counts of assault inflicting serious bodily injury.
Asheville Regional Adding Flights To Philly (Asheville, NC)
More flights are being added to Asheville Regional Airport. American Airlines is selling tickets for daily non-stop flights to Philadelphia which will begin next May. WLOS-TV says Philly is now the 16th non-stop destination at the airport. Bloomberg News called Asheville Regional the country's second-fastest growing airport after eleven consecutive months of double-digit growth.
Residents Concerned Over Radiation From Smart Meters (Black Mountain, NC)
Some Buncombe County residents are concerned about radiation from smart meters. WLOS-TV says members of the Swannanoa Valley For Safe Technology met on Saturday to discuss the dangers of radio-frequency technology used by utility companies to track home energy use. Duke Energy says the levels of radiation are similar to those from cell phones. A petition signed by all members will be sent to Duke.
Panthers Roll To Third Straight Win (Charlotte, NC)
The Panthers are now riding a three-game winning streak. Sunday's 42-28 home win over Tampa Bay keeps Carolina one game behind New Orleans in the NFC South standings. The Saints won their seventh game in a row yesterday. The Panthers held the league's number one offense in check to just over 300 yards.
