High School Senior Dies In Wreck (Buncombe County, NC)
A Henderson high school community is mourning the tragic loss of a student this week. Seventeen-year-old Alexis Moffitt died on Monday after her car reportedly crashed head-on with a truck on Christ School Road in Buncombe County. Investigators say wet roads were a factor. Moffitt was a senior at West Henderson High.
Freezing Rain Expected In WNC Tonight (Asheville, NC)
Western North Carolina emergency crews are preparing for possible hazardous winter weather tonight. The National Weather Service says rain will make a return later in the day and turn to freezing rain and sleet overnight. These conditions are expected in the foothills and eastern slopes of the mountains. Ice accumulations could reach up to half-an-inch in some areas.
Lawsuit Seeking New State House And Senate Lines (Raleigh, NC)
The North Carolina Democratic Party and Common Cause want the state's house and senate districts redrawn due to partisan gerrymandering. A lawsuit has now been filed to have the district lines changed in time for the 2020 election. Republican Senate leader Phil Bergman's office told the Raleigh News-Observer that the suit is a power grab. A judicial panel ruled in August that North Carolina's congressional lines be redrawn for the 2020 election.
BRP Tunnel Closed For Repairs (Asheville, NC)
Crews are making tunnel repairs along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Yancey County. The National Park Service says a four foot section of the Tanbark Tunnel's ceiling came loose last weekend. The parkway between mileposts 355 and 375 will be blocked off while tunnel repairs are on-going.
Disaster Declaration Appeal Rejected (Polk County, NC)
FEMA is advising Governor Roy Cooper that an appeal to declare parts of North Carolina a disaster area is declined. Cooper was looking to help nearly a dozen counties heavily affected by May flooding that came over a couple of weeks. FEMA ruled that the flooding and damage was done in two separate events and wouldn't make a disaster declaration.
Airline To Offer Sarasota Flight Out Of Asheville (Asheville, NC)
An airline is adding another city to the list of nonstop destinations out of the Asheville Regional Airport. Allegiant Airlines will add two flights a week beginning in late February that will head to Sarasota, Florida. It will be the airline's eighth destination flown to from Asheville.
Students Arrested After Threats Shut Down School (Charlotte, NC)
Three students are being accused of making social media threats that caused a high school lockdown in Charlotte yesterday. Officers responded to Olympic High and searched every room after indirect threats of violence were allegedly sent to several students. The school dismissed early after the lockdown was completely lifted. A 16-year-old and two 15-year-olds were all arrested for handgun possession charges.
