(Haywood County, NC) -- A Haywood County woman is being accused of plotting to have her husband killed. Yvonne Wadham allegedly paid a law enforcement officer to murder him. The husband said their relationship has been a rocky one. Wadham is now in jail with a one-point-five-million-dollar bond.
New Buncombe Manager To Be Introduced Today
(Buncombe County, NC) -- The search for a new manager in Buncombe County is expected to come to an end today. Commissioners are expected to approve the hiring of the lone candidate left in the process at a 4 o'clock meeting this afternoon. The incoming manager was chosen from an original pool of around 40 candidates in a nationwide search. George Wood has been serving in the interim.
Man Accused Of Assault Shot In Leg
(McDowell County, NC) -- McDowell County investigators say a Nebo man accused of assaulting his grandmother was shot in the leg on Friday. Cory Beck allegedly dragged his wheelchair-bound grandmother outside a Briar Patch Drive home and assaulted her. The woman's son-in-law then reportedly retaliated with gunfire and shot Beck in the leg. Both Beck and his grandmother were taken to the hospital.
One Dead In Skyland Fire
(Buncombe County, NC) -- Buncombe County fire officials are investigating a deadly blaze in Skyland. Fire ripped through a home on School Road early Friday morning before the roof eventually collapsed. An elderly couple was able to make it out safely. Their 59-year-old son didn't make it out in time. Investigators haven't found a cause yet.
APD Investigates Shooting At Pisgah View Apartments
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville Police are investigating an apartment shooting. One person was injured on Monday afternoon at the Pisgah View Apartments on Granada Street. The after-school Marvelous Math Club group hosted by Asheville city schools was meeting at the complex at the time of the shooting and placed on full lockdown. There has been no word of any arrests.
Asheville DMV Office Reopens Amid Investigation
(Asheville, NC) -- The DMV office on Hendersonville Road in Asheville is open again. WLOS-TV says the state conducted an inventory audit after an internal investigation began almost a month ago. The state DMV has been tight-lipped on what led to the investigation.
Elections Board Sets Dates For Ninth District Hearing
(Raleigh, NC) -- The state board of elections will soon meet to discuss the ninth district congressional race. The newly-appointed members will hold an evidentiary hearing into alleged ballot fraud February 18th through the 20th. Governor Roy Cooper selected the new board last week. Republican Mark Harris finished the race more than 900 votes over Democrat Dan McCready, but the results haven't been certified.
Shelby Man With ALS Dies On Way To Super Bowl
(Shelby, NC) -- State troopers say a Shelby man with ALS died on the way to the Super Bowl on Sunday. Ed Cushman was given tickets to the championship by Team Gleason, which is a charity named after former New Orleans Saint Steve Gleason. Investigators said the van he was riding in caught fire in Georgia. Cushman's father and brother reportedly tried to pull him out, but they were too late to save him.
Charlotte Man Who Tried To Help ISIS Sentenced To Prison
(Charlotte, NC) -- A Charlotte man who tried to help ISIS is heading to prison. Prosecutors say Erick Hendricks used social media to recruit a cell of ISIS supporters. He was arrested at a home in Hidden Valley in 2016. Hendricks was found guilty last year and recently sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Driver Accused Of DUI In Deadly Crash
(Indian Land, SC) -- A woman is accused of being drunk in a deadly crash in Lancaster County last week. Three people died and three others were injured when the car slammed into a tree off U.S. 521 in Indian Land on January 27th. Felicia Coffey was arrested after she was released from a Charlotte hospital. She faces three counts of felony DUI resulting in death.
United Way Cutting Local Donations
(Charlotte, NC) -- The United Way of Central Carolinas is cutting funds to its grant partners. The chapter's CEO says the organization will have to decrease spending by one-million-dollars from now until 2020. Donations have reportedly been down since the recession.
City Council Discussing Four-Year Terms Again
(Charlotte, NC) -- The Charlotte city council is discussing the possibility of four-year terms again. Members voted yesterday to put the item on the agenda next week. They are considering whether to implement the term changes themselves or put the items on a referendum in November for the public to decide. Council members currently serve two-year terms.
Vote To Move NC DMV Headquarters Delayed
(Raleigh, NC) -- The decision of whether to relocate the North Carolina DMV headquarters to Rocky Mount is being postponed. The vote was scheduled for today, but yesterday Governor Roy Cooper pushed it back. The Department of Transportation has until 2020 to move to a new headquarters, the move will likely only be a six month process. It isn't known when a vote on this matter will happen, because Moore's office didn't set a new date.
Nursing Home Fire Injures Three People
(Wake Forest, NC) -- Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a fire that injured three people in a Wake Forest nursing home. Firefighters say the fire broke out yesterday morning at the Hillside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Dozens of residents were forced to evacuate, one suffered minor injuries and two suffered from smoke inhalation. The fire was contained to one room.
Boyfriend Charged With Murder In Lillington
(Lillington, NC) -- A man is facing charges in connection with a murder in Lillington. Harnett County deputies said yesterday 25-year-old Sequanna Monroe was killed by her boyfriend 26-year-old Scott Spencer. She was found dead in the home where they both lived. Spencer was charged with first-degree murder. Deputies didn't say how or why Monroe was killed.
Whooping Cough In Moore County Schools
(Moore Co., NC) -- Moore County may be dealing with a whooping cough outbreak. Yesterday, county officials announced that they have five area students who've been diagnosed with whooping cough, or pertussis. This is a highly contagious respiratory disease trademarked by violent coughing fits that can make breathing difficult. The affected students go to West End Elementary, Southern Pines Primary and Pinecrest High. Officials recommend getting children vaccinated against whooping cough.
Man Faces Child Abuse Charges
(Raleigh, NC) -- A Raleigh man is facing child abuse charges for allegedly hurting a three-year-old boy. Police say 34-year-old Ryan Bushey is a friend of the child's family, and was watching the boy in November when he assaulted him. Bruises were found all over the child's face, torso and genitals. Bushey's bond is set at 200-thousand-dollars and he's set to appear in court this week.
Request To Lower Bond For Woman Accused Of Kidnapping Hoax Denied
(Scotland Co., NC) -- A woman in Scotland County accused of making up a story about a missing infant and her mother is staying behind bars for now. Deputies say last week, 30-year-old Danilla Bethea, of Rockingham, concocted a story about a fictional missing woman and her missing baby for money. The fake woman's picture was ripped off of social media. Bethea's request yesterday to have her 100-thousand-dollar bond lowered was denied. She faces ten-counts of obtaining property under false pretenses and falsely reporting a missing child.
Bennett College Raises More Than Enough To Stay Open
(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro's historically black women's college is staying open. Bennett College President Phyllis Dawkins announced yesterday they'd surpassed their five-million-dollar fundraising goal and will be able to keep their accreditation. The college raised a total over eight-point-two-million dollars over the past six weeks. More than eleven-thousand donations were made.
Four-Year-Old Suspected For Bringing Gun To School
(Mount Gilead, NC) -- A four-year-old boy is suspended for the rest of the year after he brought a loaded handgun to his pre-k class at Mount Gilead Elementary School. Police say the child was caught showing the nine-millimeter Smith & Wesson to classmates last Thursday. They say the boy didn't give a clear explanation why he brought the weapon to school. The case was turned over to the Juvenile Court Counselor. The child's mom, Sadira Hitchcock, was charged with failing to secure a firearm from a minor.
Man Accused Of Breaking Into Woman's Apartment, Wearing Her Clothes
(Greensboro, NC) -- A man is under arrest after a UNCG student found him in her closet and wearing her clothes. It happened this past Saturday at the Edge Apartments near campus. The student tells police her clothes had been disappearing for quite some time. Thirty-year-old Andrew Swofford was arrested on 14 felony charges, including larceny and identity theft.
Reward Offered In String Of Greensboro Robberies
(Greensboro, NC) -- Crime Stoppers is offering a five-thousand-dollar reward for information leading to an arrest in a string of Greensboro robberies. Police say there have been about 20 commercial robberies since November. The businesses include several convenience stores, Family Dollar and Herbie's Place restaurant. Third Suspect Arrested In Greensboro Apartment Shooting
(Greensboro, NC) -- A third person is under arrest in connection with a deadly shooting at a Greensboro apartment complex. The victim, 55-year-old Kim Young Brown, was shot last month at Cinnamon Ridge apartments on 8 Sails Way. Carlton White is charged with first-degree murder. Two other suspects were arrested on suspicion of murder late last month. They're William Allen and Justin Boggs.
