State Democrats Introduce Gun Control Proposals On Parkland Anniversary
(Raleigh, NC) -- House Democrats are calling for more gun control. A bill introduced yesterday in Raleigh came on the one-year anniversary of a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Measures in the proposal will allow police to destroy seized guns, require permits for assault weapons and the ban of bump stock accessories. Governor Roy Cooper tweeted about the Parkland shooting yesterday, saying that guns must be kept out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.
Brevard Suspect Arrested For Shooting
(Brevard, NC) -- A Brevard man is accused of shooting one person in the chest at his home late Wednesday night. The victim had surgery yesterday at Mission Hospital in Asheville. Brevard Police say they arrested Mark Rushton for felony assault and three other misdemeanor charges. The victim was reportedly visiting Rushton at his home on Oakdale Street when the shooting happened.
WNC Legislators Push For Redistricting Reform
(Raleigh, NC) -- Two Western North Carolina legislators are pushing to reform the way district lines are drawn in the state. Democrat Brian Turner and Republican Chuck McGrady are co-sponsors for a House bill that would create a new nonpartisan committee in charge of creating district maps following every census. Turner of Biltmore Forest said this week that it's a way to restore fairness and transparency in what has been a historically partisan process. The proposal has bipartisan support.
Asheville Mayor Opposes ICE Raids
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville's mayor is taking a stand against recent ICE raids in North Carolina. Esther Manheimer and six other mayors in the state released a joint statement on Thursday in opposition of raids they say have caused terror in the hearts of community members. The letter said over 200 people have been targeted in raids over the past week, and they now want it to stop.
Tumbling Logs Cause Highway Closure
(McDowell County, NC) -- The state highway patrol says logs blocked part of U.S. 70 in McDowell County last night. A truck spilled the logs about three miles west of U.S. 221. One lane of the highway was blocked during the clean-up. No one was injured.
DC Flights Added At Asheville Regional
(Asheville, NC) -- Travelers now have an easier way to get to the nation's capital from Western North Carolina. The Asheville Regional Airport says United Airlines is now offering two non-stop flights every day to Washington Dulles International Airport. The airport's executive director says they've been looking to get non-stop flights to DC for years.
Suspect On Run After Armed Robbery At Store
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is looking for a suspect who allegedly helped hold up a cell phone store in Steele Creek last night. Investigators say two men broke into United Wireless Group on Green Park Circle around 7 p.m. One suspect was arrested after employees were able to hold him down until police arrived. A U-Haul truck the second man used to flee the scene was found abandoned.
Judge Delays Trial After Borum Falls Asleep
(Charlotte, NC) -- A judge is delaying a Charlotte murder trial because the defendant has been falling asleep in court. Attorneys for Rayquan Borum say his anti-depression and anxiety medications have been causing him to doze off. Jury selection has now been pushed back for a competency hearing today. Borum is accused of killing Justin Carr during the uptown riots in 2016.
Amtrak Train Hits, Kills One In Concord
(Concord, NC) -- Amtrak officials say a person was hit and killed by a train in Concord yesterday. It was headed from Charlotte to Raleigh when the accident happened at Corban Avenue around 3:30 in the afternoon. Another person died after being hit by an Amtrak train in Raleigh heading on the same route about 30 minutes earlier. Neither identity has been released.
NBA Stars Serve Community Today
(Charlotte, NC) -- Basketball stars are out in Charlotte today trying to make a difference in an initiative called NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service. Players have an opportunity to help sort food donations with the Second Harvest Food Bank and assist the United Way in renovating a community center in Renaissance West. The NBA surprised the basketball teams at West Charlotte High School yesterday with new lockers and jerseys. The All-Star Game is in Charlotte this weekend for the first time since 1991.

(Charlotte, NC) -- Investigators say a man was shot in the leg while riding on I-77 near Carowinds last night. The driver pulled over at a gas station on Nations Ford Road to call 911. The victim was last listed in stable condition.

(Charlotte, NC) -- A native Charlotte musician is coming back to take the stage at the NBA All-Star Game. Grammy award-winner Anthony Hamilton has been chosen to sing the National Anthem at the Spectrum Center on Sunday night. Hamilton attended South Mecklenburg and then graduated from Harding High in the late 80s.
Suspect Who Allegedly Shot Two Pharmacy Workers Is Shot, Arrested
(Wake Co., NC) -- A man who police believe shot two people at a Wake County pharmacy is in custody. Investigators say 60-year-old Stephen Denning shot a woman and a man yesterday at a Walgreens in Garner. Both victims were seriously injured, and one is in critical condition. Denning was shot by a deputy who caught up with him at a Raleigh Golden Corral. He was taken to the hospital and is charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. More charges against Denning are expected.
NC Basketball Player Accused Of Hitting Ex Suspended
(Raleigh, NC) -- A North Carolina State University basketball player is accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend. Yesterday, 23-year-old Kevin Lockett was arrested and charged with assault. His ex says she wanted the charges dropped because she swung at him first. Head Coach Kevin Keatts announced that he had been suspended from the team. Lockett is free on bond, and there's no word on how long his suspension is for.
FSU Cop Accused Of Shooting Wife
(Raeford, NC) -- A Fayetteville State University cop is accused of shooting his wife. Police arrested 26-year-old Corey Manning yesterday after he allegedly shot his wife in a domestic dispute. They say he shot her in the hip area outside a McDonald's in Raeford. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. Police say Manning tried to run from the scene, but they caught him. He hasn't been charged yet.
Details On Suspect Accused Of Kidnapping, Killing Hania Aguilar
(Lumberton, NC) -- Court documents recently unsealed are shedding light into the mind of the man accused of killing Hania Aguilar. Yesterday, Robeson County prosecutors released more than 500 pages of documents related to the case. The documents say a number of witnesses say they heard 34-year-old Michael McLellan talk about planning a crime, and he had identified three potential targets. McLellan also allegedly wore a yellow bandana over his face before the crime to hide his race and make people assume he was a member of the Latin Kings.
Police Find One Murder Suspect, Still Search For Second
(Durham, NC) -- Durham police have arrested a murder suspect, but they're still looking for another. Yesterday, police announced that they had arrested 21-year-old Rashawn Deleon for the shooting in December that killed Ricky Yates on East Cornwallis Road. Nineteen-year-old Antonio Johnson is also wanted for the murder and police ask anyone with information to call them.
Police Investigating After Amtrak Killed Pedestrian
(Raleigh, NC) -- Raleigh police are investigating after a person was killed by an Amtrak train. They say someone was hit and killed on the train tracks on Motor Pool Street yesterday afternoon. No one on the train was injured. Officials say they aren't sure what the unidentified victim was doing on the tracks, but a death investigation is underway.
Adolescents Arrested After Police Chase In Thomasville
(Thomasville, NC) -- Three 14-year-old boys are under arrest on suspicion of leading Thomasville police on a chase in a stolen car. The scene unfolded Wednesday afternoon near Mendenhall and Unity streets when officers tried to stop the car for speeding. The suspects sped off before stopping at the intersection of Fairway and Cox avenues and fleeing. They were found hiding in a barn and arrested. Schools in Thomasville were placed on a temporary lockdown as a precaution.
Family Offers Reward In Death Of Thomasville Couple
(Thomasville, NC) -- The family of a Thomasville couple who was found dead inside their home is offering a five-thousand-dollar reward leading to an arrest in the case. Forty-six-year-old Bill Jones and his 51-year-old wife, Kimberly, were found dead on December 27th, just days after Christmas. Their house had caught fire, but an autopsy revealed the couple died of gunshot wounds. Anyone with information is urged to call police.
Man Charged In Death Of Winston-Salem Mother Of Four
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A man is charged in the death of a Winston-Salem woman whose body was found in a dumpster. Thirty-one-year-old Mario Bennett is charged with murder. He's accused of killing 30-year-old Shantika Lashae, who's a mother of four. Her remains were found in a dumpster last December, two days after she was reported missing. Bennett is scheduled to appear in court next month.
Two Suspects Charged After Man Shot, Killed Outside Winston-Salem Bar
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Two suspects are under arrest after a man was shot and killed outside a Winston-Salem bar. Twenty-three-year-old Gregory Thompson and 25-year-old Danny Ford are charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. They're accused of shooting 25-year-old Cequan Scales in the parking lot of Absolute Ultra Bar & Lounge this past weekend. Both men are being held at the Forsyth County Detention Center and are due in court next month.
Man Accused Of Selling Drugs At Winston-Salem Elementary
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A man who worked as a site leader at an after-school program in Winston-Salem is accused of selling drugs on school grounds. Twenty-two-year-old Arkeem Woods helped out with the YMCA after school program at Ibraham Elementary School. He's accused of selling cocaine on school grounds. Woods is facing several charges, including possession with intent to sell and deliver. Officials do not believe students or staff were involved.
