(Buncombe County, NC) -- Buncombe County is no longer holding ICE detainees in jail. Sheriff Quentin Miller said yesterday that his office doesn't enforce immigration laws. ICE detainees will be released because Miller says they aren't being held on legal warrants. ICE officials have said it will undermine the ability to protect public safety.
Republican Harris Won't Run In NC Re-election
(Charlotte, NC) -- North Carolina Republican Mark Harris says he won't run in the new election for the U.S. House. Harris cited health concerns for dropping out of the race for North Carolina's 9th District. The special election was called last week following an investigation and hearing into voter fraud. A Republican operative working for the Harris campaign is accused of tampering with absentee ballots. Democrat Dan McCready has already announced he's running in the new election.
WNC Lawmaker Hit With Protective Order
(Brevard, NC) -- A western North Carolina lawmaker is being ordered to stay away from his wife. A judge issued a one-year protective order yesterday against District 113 Representative Cody Henson. The judge says he found evidence that he was harassing his wife through text messages. Kelsey Henson says she feared for her life.
Investigators Need Info On Missing Man Found Dead
(Jackson County, NC) -- Investigators are searching for details in the death of a missing man. Steven Smith was reported missing in Haywood County two days before his body was found in a ditch just inside the Jackson County line on February 20th. The sheriff's office is looking for information from anyone who may have seen Smith in the few days before he was found. He was last seen alive in the Balsam community.
Road Crews Cleaning Up Multiple Slides
(Undated) -- Crews are still busy cleaning up roads in western North Carolina affected by slides over the past week. The DOT was able to re-open one lane of Big Hungry Road in Henderson County yesterday. A section of Howard Gap Road near Saluda is completely closed after both lanes completely sunk due to heavy rains. The DOT is still targeting Friday to reopen a part of I-40 at a rockslide near the Tennessee state line.
Hickory Child Chosen As Gerber Spokesbaby
(Hickory, NC) -- A one-year-old from Hickory is this year's Gerber spokesbaby. Kairi Yang was chosen yesterday by the famous baby foods company from more than half-a-million entries. Gerber said Kairi has a spunky attitude with a larger than life personality.
Union County Commissioner To Enter Congressional Race
(Union County, NC) -- A Union County commissioner is throwing his hat into the new ninth district congressional race. Republican Stony Rushing announced yesterday that he'll be running for the seat just as he got an endorsement on Facebook from former candidate Mark Harris. Democrat Dan McCready has already announced he'll be running in the race again. He says the election is bigger than any one race or person.
Two Shot To Death In Rock Hill
(Rock Hill, SC) -- Rock Hill police are investigating a double-homicide. Two people were found shot to death inside a car that hit a fence on South Jones Avenue yesterday afternoon. Officers sent out a K9 unit in the surrounding block in the search for a suspect. A drive-by shooting with no injuries was reported on the same street the night before.
CMPD Investigates Deadly Shooting Near Hotel
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating another fatal shooting. A woman was found shot to death on Tom Hunter Road near the Economy Inn at I-85 early Tuesday morning. Investigators said she had multiple gunshot wounds. No suspects have been arrested.
Gun Found At Another School
(Charlotte, NC) -- Guns are causing more problems at another Charlotte high school. Myers High went into a lockdown after a social media post surfaced claiming someone had a gun on campus on Monday. School officials initially said that no weapon was found, but they sent another message to parents yesterday that indicated a gun had been found on campus. Guns were discovered at two Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools last week.
Three Businesses Damaged In Huntersville Fire
(Huntersville, NC) -- Three Huntersville businesses are looking at damages from a Tuesday night fire. Huntersville fire investigators believe the flames started in the attic of Slice House Pizza on Old Statesville Road. The fire damaged the surrounding businesses before crews from Huntersville and Cornelius were able to contain it. One firefighter was rescued after becoming disoriented in the thick smoke.
United Methodist Church Rejects LGBT-inclusive Proposals
(Saint Louis, MO) -- The United Methodist Church will continue to ban gay marriage. Yesterday at the church's general conference in Saint Louis, Missouri, the church leadership voted to approve a plan that maintains their ban on gay marriage and openly gay clergy. Many hoped the church would adopt LGBTQ friendly reforms, but the plan passed by a vote of 438 to 384. They also voted down a plan that would allow each church to decide for themselves whether to hire gay clergy members or perform same-sex weddings.
Apex Woman Faces Charges After Hitting Cop Car, Trying To Drive Away
(Apex, NC) -- An Apex woman is accused of drunkenly crashing into a cop car. Police say yesterday morning, 32-year-old Chilea Dickson crashed her car into the back of an Apex police cruiser that had its light on parked on the shoulder of US Highway one. Police say Dickson tried to drive away, but they caught up with her down the road and found drugs and an open container in the car. The officer who was in the struck car was taken to the hospital, but he was released and finished his shift. Dickson is behind bars on 20-thousand-dollars bond.
No Serious Injuries After Wake County Deputy Fired His Gun At Driver
(Wake Co., NC) -- A man accused of hitting a Wake County deputy with his car is behind bars. The sheriff's department says a deputy pulled over Yama Ahmadi yesterday on Ebenezer Church Road. The deputy says when he approached the vehicle, Ahmadi backed up, hit him and drove off. The deputy fell down, pulled his gun and fired a shot, but missed the suspect. Ahmadi was arrested later after crashing about a mile away. The deputy wasn't seriously injured and Ahmadi is charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer.
Wake County Animal Control Officers Seize More Than 30 Dogs
(Wake Co., NC) -- Wake County Animal Control has its hands full after having to take more than 30 dogs. Officials say they had to seize the dogs from a Fuquay-Varina home yesterday because the homeowner was overwhelmed. The dogs' owner is a woman in her 50s, and she's cooperating with animal control officers. The woman isn't facing charges and animal control officers say it's okay for pet owners who are in over their heads to ask for help.
Search For Missing Winston-Salem Woman Intensifies
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- The search for a missing woman from Winston-Salem is intensifying. Crews are now looking for 30-year-old Kristen McNeal by land and air. The mother of two vanished on February 17th. She was last seen at a home near Piedmont Memorial Drive and Winter Hue Street. Police believe she could be in the Kernersville-area. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.
Suspect Who Threatened Shooting At Greensboro School Facing Federal Charges
(Greensboro, NC) -- The heavily-armed Virginia man who was arrested at a high school campus in Greensboro is now facing federal charges. Steven Spence is charged with interstate transportation of a stolen motor vehicle, traveling with the intent to kill and carrying firearms in relation to a crime of violence. Authorities say the man wandered onto he campus of Smith High School last December, carrying loaded guns and a backpack full of ammo. He had allegedly planned on shooting a couple of people there. Spence was confronted and eventually arrested at the edge of school property.
Interim Superintendent Named For Winston-Salem/Forsyth Co. Schools
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Board of Education is naming in interim superintendent. Dr. Kenneth Simington will fill in while the board searches for a replacement for Dr. Beverly Emory. She announced her resignation earlier this month after accepting a position with the state Department of Public Instruction.
High Point Police Searching For Armed And Dangerous Man
(High Point, NC) -- High Point police are actively looking for a man who's considered armed and dangerous. Corderrel McCoy is believed to have assaulted and killed Tanique Allen, whose body was found last week on East Commerce Avenue. Police have obtained a murder warrant for McCoy's arrest and are asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.
