Democrats Call On WNC Lawmaker To Resign

(Raleigh, NC) -- The North Carolina Democratic Party is calling on a Western North Carolina lawmaker to step down. A criminal summons was filed against District 113 State Representative Cody Henson for alleged cyberstalking this week. The Republican's wife was granted a protective order against him last month. Democrats said yesterday that domestic violence or abuse in any form is unacceptable.

Man Crushed By Car In Nebo

(McDowell County, NC) -- McDowell County investigators say a man was accidentally crushed by a car yesterday. Friends say the Virginia man was camping with them on Bear Cliff Drive in Nebo when the accident happened. A car accidentally rolled on him while he was working on it. The man died at the scene.

Former Buncombe Commissioner To Run For State Senate

(Buncombe County, NC) -- A former Buncombe County commissioner is throwing her name into a state Senate race. Patsy Keever said yesterday that she'll run for Senate District 48 in the upcoming election, which is held by Republican Chuck Edwards. Keever has been head of the state Democratic Party and served in the state house. She says she believes in the people of the mountains.

Hendersonville Moves Forward With Sales Tax Referendum Plan

(Hendersonville, NC) -- Hendersonville officials are moving forward with a possible quarter-cent sales tax referendum. The city council approved a resolution last night to ask the state to allow local voters to decide on the sales tax. It's expected to pull in two-million-dollars-a-year for maintenance projects and street construction. The idea is to generate sales tax dollars from out-of-town visitors who come in and spend money.

Police Looking For Hit-And-Run Suspect

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are looking for the driver of a hit-and-run from Wednesday night. A pedestrian was allegedly struck while trying to cross at Haywood Road and Vermont Avenue in west Asheville. Investigators said a silver Isuzu Rodeo drove away before police arrived. The victim told WLOS-TV that the suspect needs to man up and come forward.

SoCon Tournaments Underway In Asheville

(Asheville, NC) -- Thousands are flocking to Asheville this weekend for the Southern Conference basketball championships. The quarterfinal round for the women's side was played at the U.S. Cellular Center last night. The semifinal round will be played today, while the men will play first round games. Winners of both championships head to the NCAA tournament.

Cold Case Murder Suspect Arrested

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD says an arrest has been made in a cold case quadruple murder from more than a decade ago. Dominick Raise is accused of gunning down four people in a south Charlotte apartment on High Meadow Line in 2008. There's no word from the CMPD on what led to yesterday's arrest. A five-thousand-dollar reward remains in play for more information in the case.

Arson Suspected In Apartment Fire

(Charlotte, NC) -- A north Charlotte apartment complex fire is being investigated as an arson. The fire broke out at Hunters Pointe Apartments in Hidden Valley early Thursday morning. Most of the fire was reportedly contained to the leasing office building. Five people were displaced and damages totaled around 200-thousand-dollars.

Another Arrest In Ballot Fraud Investigation

(Raleigh, NC) -- Another arrest is being reported in the investigation of ballot fraud in the ninth congressional district. A woman turned herself in to the Bladen County Sheriff's Office yesterday on charges of absentee ballot possession and conspiracy to commit obstruction. Four others have been arrested since last weekend.

CMPD Investigates Deadly Wreck

(Charlotte, NC) -- One person is dead in a southwest Charlotte wreck. It involved one car on South Tryon Street near Nevada Boulevard last night. Drivers were forced to use Westinghouse Boulevard as the roadway was shut down.

Charlotte Murder Suspect Arrested In Durham

(Charlotte, NC) -- The search for a suspect in a mid-February homicide in southwest Charlotte is over. The man was found in Durham yesterday and taken to jail. Nicholas Beatty is charged with the shooting death of Ervin Steward on Minuet Lane. The SBI and Durham Police helped capture Beatty in Durham.

Jury Still Deliberating In Borum Murder Trial

(Charlotte, NC) -- A Charlotte jury is deliberating again today to decide the fate of Rayquan Borum. He's been charged in the murder of Justin Carr during the uptown Charlotte riots in 2016. Jurors began deliberating Wednesday behind closed doors, but has yet to come to a decision as of yesterday. They're considering first and second-degree murder, along with possession of a firearm by a felon.

Chris Watts' Chilling Confession Tapes Released

(Dodge Co., WI) -- New audio tapes from North Carolina native Chris Watts are shedding light on his horrifying crime. He pleaded guilty in November to killing his wife Shanaan, and his three and four-year-old daughters in Colorado. The recording made last month are of him completely confessing to the murders. He says he strangled Shanaan, then drove her body and his two daughters to what would ultimately be their grave site. On the tapes, he said he didn't know why he was doing what he was doing, and that nothing made sense.

16 Displaced By Raleigh Apartment Fire

(Raleigh, NC) -- Sixteen people are out of their homes after an apartment fire in Raleigh. Last night, about 75-firefighters worked for a half an hour to get a fire at the Arium Trailwood apartments under control. One person who jumped from a second story window suffered minor injuries. Luckily, no one was hurt bad enough to be hospitalized. Firefighters say it looks like the fire was started accidentally.

Deadly Shooting In Durham

(Durham, NC) -- Durham police are investigating a deadly shooting. They say yesterday afternoon a man's body was found on Fayetteville Street, near Old Fayetteville Street. The unidentified man had been shot in a parking lot and was pronounced dead at the scene. Homicide investigators ask anyone with information to call them.

Officials Make Fifth Arrest In Election Fraud Investigation

(Bladen Co., NC) -- A fifth arrest has been made in the District Nine election fraud investigation. McCrae Dowless was the first to be arrested, followed by two women and a man this week. Yesterday, a third woman, Rebecca Thompson, turned herself into Bladen County deputies for conspiracy to commit felonious obstruction of justice and possession of absentee ballots. The investigation is still ongoing and a new election for the district has been set for September 10th.

Duke Says GoTriangle's Light Rail Plan Is Dangerous

(Durham, NC) -- Duke officials are making a statement about the Durham-Orange Light Rail project, or lack thereof. GoTriangle recently announced that Duke University didn't meet the deadline to sign off on the project. Yesterday, Duke announced they are declining to participate in the project at all. Duke officials say the route along Erwin Road next to Duke Medical Center poses unacceptable risks to the safety of the nearly one-point-five-million patients they serve every year. They say the plan is not workable and appear to be done with it entirely.

Dankery Food Truck Gets Thumbs Up From NBA Star Dwyane Wade

(Durham, NC) -- A Durham food truck is getting some major online buzz thanks to an NBA star. The News and Observer reports that Dwyane Wade was in town for the Duke-Wake Forest game on Tuesday when he dropped by the Dankery food truck. The owner of the Dankery posted a picture with Wade in front of the truck on Instagram. It already has nearly four-thousand likes.

Asheboro Man Killed In Orange Co. Crash

(Orange Co., NC) -- An Asheboro man is dead after his car flew off a bridge in Orange County and landed on the road below. It happened early yesterday morning on I-85 in Efland. Sixty-two-year-old Kim Morgan was killed. Troopers have not said what caused the crash. They're looking into whether alcohol was involved.

NC Teachers Could Get Raise If They Carry Weapons

(Raleigh, NC) -- A proposed law would give North Carolina teachers who become trained to carry weapons salary increases. Senator Jerry Tillman filed the School Security Act of 2019 this week. It would offer a five-percent raise to up to three-thousand teachers who become "teacher resource officers." The training and raises would cost about nine-point-three-million dollars in the 2019-2020 fiscal year.

Man Killed In Caswell Co. House Fire

(Caswell Co., NC) -- A Caswell County man is dead after his home caught fire. It happened yesterday morning off Jeffries Road in Pelham Township. Fifty-five-year-old Mark Coles was found unresponsive. Investigators believe the fire may have been electrical in nature.

Mother, Father Arrested In Infant Abuse Case

(Burlington, NC) -- A couple in Burlington is facing child abuse charges after their five-week-old baby was taken to the hospital with multiple fractures. Jeffrey Morales and Heather Derendal are facing charges of felony child abuse and child neglect. The infant is recovering under the care of the Department of Social Services.

Eugene Street Bridge In Greensboro To Close For Repairs

(Greensboro, NC) -- Parts of the Eugene Street bridge in downtown Greensboro are shutting down for repairs. At least one southbound lane and one northbound lane will be closed starting at 9 a.m. Monday. City officials say the bridge decking is getting fixed. Work is expected to continue daily through March 20th. Drivers should expect delays.
