Buncombe Lawmakers Introduce Equality Bills
(Raleigh, NC) -- Two Buncombe County state lawmakers are making a push to protect the LGBTQ community from discrimination. Democrat Senator Terry Van Duyn and Representative Susan Fisher introduced a trio of bills yesterday aimed at banning conversion therapy, repealing the remnants of the bathroom bill and expanding discrimination protections. Activists gathered at Asheville's First Congressional United Church of Christ yesterday to support the legislation.
Interstate 40 Re-Opening Delayed
(Haywood County, NC) -- The complete re-opening of I-40 in Haywood County is being delayed. A rockslide in February caused the DOT to shut down one direction of the interstate close to the Tennessee line. One lane has been opened in both directions since crews initially cleared some of the debris away. The DOT says it may now be early May before all lanes can open.
Asheville Airport To Expand Terminal
(Asheville, NC) -- The Asheville Regional Airport is expected to see some big changes in the next few years. The Citizen-Times reported yesterday that officials plan to double the size of the airport's terminal. That project would begin in 2021 and be completed within about four years. Passenger numbers at Asheville Regional topped one-million for the first time ever last year.
Asheville Native Released Before MLB Season
(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville native is looking for a place to play as the 2019 Major League Baseball season begins. Roberson High grad Cameron Maybin was released from the San Francisco Giants a week ago. He was arrested for an alleged DUI in Arizona earlier this month.
Suspect Arrested With Variety Of Drugs
(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville man is facing five felony drug charges. Officers reportedly found heroin, fentanyl, marijuana and cocaine inside his car recently. The man was arrested by Asheville Police after trying to run away from the scene of a traffic stop. He's been released from jail on bond.
Senate Passes Proposal To Repeal Tuition Surcharge
(Raleigh, NC) -- The state Senate is sending a bill to the House that repeals the tuition surcharge at UNC schools. It eliminates the 50-percent surcharge for students who take over 140 credit hours in a four-year- program. The surcharge reportedly affected transfer students and veterans more than any others. The measure passed the Senate unanimously yesterday.
Woman Shot To Death While Driving Car
(Charlotte, NC) -- CMPD investigators believe a woman shot to death on Thursday afternoon was an innocent bystander. Kendal Clark crashed her car at North Tryon and East 28th streets after she was shot while behind the wheel. Witnesses say there were men exchanging gunfire close by when Clark was shot. A man reported to CMC Main with a gunshot wound a short time after the accident, but it's unclear if his injury is related.
Diocese Chancellor Resigns During Investigation
(Charlotte, NC) -- The longtime chancellor of the Diocese of Charlotte is stepping down over a sexual misconduct allegation. The Diocese's Lay Review Board recently revealed a credible allegation of sexual misconduct against Monsignor Mauricio West when he worked at Belmont Abbey College in the mid-80s. West denies the allegations. He served as chancellor for almost 25 years before submitting his resignation this past Monday.
SC Lawmakers Stall Panthers' Incentives
(Fort Mill, SC) -- South Carolina state Senators are delaying a vote on a large incentive bill to lure the Carolina Panthers across the border. Team owner David Tepper is eying South Carolina as a new location for the franchise headquarters. A 120-million-dollar tax incentive is stalling in the Senate until more analysis comes in over the positive impacts the move will have on South Carolina. The state House already passed the bill.
Suspect Arrested For 2013 Murder
(Charlotte, NC) -- A man is now in jail for a 2013 murder in Charlotte. The CMPD says Carlos Knox was arrested on Wednesday for shooting a 19-year-old to death while she was sleeping inside an apartment. The victim was 13-weeks pregnant at the time. It's unclear what led to the arrest in the nearly six-year-old case.
Fire Damages Charlotte Home
(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte fire officials are investigating a blaze that damaged a home. Engines rushed to the scene on Grafton Drive last night. A total of seven people were forced out of their home. No one injured. The cause is still being investigated.
Hornets To Play Game In Paris
(Charlotte, NC) -- The Hornets are heading to Paris. The NBA says a game between the Milwaukee Bucks and Charlotte has been set up in France's capital on January 24th, 2020. It's the first-ever regular season game played in Paris. Current Hornets Tony Parker and Nicolas Batum [[ ba-TOOM ]] are both from France and have a chance to play in their home country.

(Washington, DC) -- Duke and Virginia Tech face off tonight in one of the must watch Sweet 16 games. Last time the pair faced off, the Hokies beat the Blue Devils at Cassell Coliseum. However, this time Duke will have a couple power players they didn't last time, Zion Williamson and Justin Robinson. Duke barely avoided a major upset loss last game and many are wondering if they can pull it together tonight.
Military Exercises In Raleigh
(Raleigh, NC) -- Some in Raleigh may have heard gunfire and helicopters last night. The United States Army says they were conducting training exercises involving helicopters and simulated shooting. Raleigh police said the exercises were set to take place near Capital Boulevard, and those affected were notified ahead of time. It wasn't made clear where exactly the military exercises were happening, or why.
Two Women Found Dead In Wayne County
(Wayne Co., NC) -- Deputies in Wayne County are investigating after two women were found dead. They say both women were found dead of gunshot wounds in the bathroom of a Pikeville home Wednesday night. One of the women was 39-years-old and the other was 58, neither women's identity is being released yet. Apparently one woman died of a self inflicted gunshot wound, and the other died as the result of being shot. A weapon was found at the scene.
Toddler Still In Serious Condition After 4 Story Fall
(Raleigh, NC) -- A toddler who fell from a fourth-story window in Raleigh is still in serious condition. The two-year-old boy fell from the window of an apartment at the Lake Park Condominiums on Crab Orchard Drive Wednesday night. The boy was unconscious, but still breathing when he was rushed to the hospital. The fall is being investigated as an accident.
Two Major Scooter Companies Leave Raleigh
(Raleigh, NC) -- A couple major scooter companies have enough with Raleigh. This week, The News Observer reported that companies like Lime and Bird would be packing up their bags here because they've had it with the regulations and fees. Lime officials say that despite efforts to partner with the city, the city council has decided to impose ridiculous fees like an arbitrary 300-dollar per scooter fee. Five other scooter companies are still vying to stay in the Raleigh scooter space.
One Dead And Three Injured In Cumberland County
(Cumberland Co., NC) -- One person is dead and three others are injured in Cumberland County. Officials say yesterday morning a van was hit by a Toyota driver who didn't stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Wade-Stedman Road and Hayfield Road. Thirty-six-year-old Daniel Ezzell was ejected and pronounced dead at the hospital. The driver of the Toyota, 35-year-old Thomas Zabo was also seriously injured, but he's charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and driving with a revoked license.
Two People Killed In Multi-Car Wreck In Yadkin Co.
(Yadkin Co,. NC) -- Two people are dead after a multi-vehicle wreck in Yadkin County. It happened yesterday afternoon on I-77 near US-21 North. State troopers say a big-rig failed to stop for stalled traffic and plowed into the back of a pickup truck, sending the truck into the back of another big-rig. Two people inside the pickup were killed. The drivers of the big-rigs suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Person Shot Near Dudley High School In Greensboro
(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police are investigating after a person was shot near Dudley High School. It happened around 4:45 yesterday afternoon on South English Street near McConnell Road. The victim was rushed to the hospital, but their current condition is unknown. Police have not said what led up to the shooting or who did it.
Man Arrested After Stand-Off At High Point PD
(High Point, NC) -- A man is under arrest after a stand-off with officers at the High Point Police Department. Officers say the suspect showed up at the station with "ill intent." They drew their guns and the man was eventually taken into custody. Officers were able to talk to the man and plan on getting him mental health treatment. His identity will not be released because police are not considering it a criminal case.
Two Guilford Co. Powerball Winners Announced
(Guilford Co., NC) -- Two Powerball tickets purchased in Guilford County are winners from Wednesday's drawing. Each ticket is worth 50-thousand dollars. One of the tickets was purchased at Quality Mart in Oak Ridge and the other one was bought at Food Lion in Whitsett. A ticket sold in Wisconsin won the nearly 770-million-dollar jackpot, the third largest on record.
UNC Faces Auburn In Sweet 16
(Chapel Hill, NC) -- March Madness continues tonight with the men's NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. One-seed UNC will battle fifth-seeded Auburn in Kansas City this evening. The Tar Heels picked up wins over Iona and Washington in the first two rounds of the tournament.
