Two Killed In UNC Charlotte Shooting, Suspect Arrested

(Charlotte, NC) -- The suspected gunman in a deadly shooting at UNC Charlotte is in police custody. Twenty-two-year-old Trystan Terrell was arrested after investigators say he opened fired on campus yesterday, killing two people and injuring four others. Governor Roy Cooper says the entire state is supporting the community at UNC Charlotte. The school's chancellor called it the worst day in the history of the university.

Two Missing Maine Boys Found In WNC

(Macon County, NC) -- The search for two missing Maine boys is over in Western North Carolina. Joel and Carter Strother were found with their father at a campground outside Franklin yesterday thanks to a tip on their location. The boys had been missing from their home in Presque Isle, Maine for a few weeks. Their father was accused of violating a custody agreement when he took them.

Teachers Rally In Raleigh Today

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina teachers are rallying in Raleigh today. The Buncombe County School District says it has offered teachers a chance to participate, but classes are operating on an early dismissal time of one this afternoon. Asheville City Schools are closed. Thousands are expected to rally in downtown Raleigh for higher pay, more support staff and Medicaid expansion.

State Superintendent Doesn't Support Rally On School Day

(Raleigh, NC) -- The State Superintendent says he doesn't support today's teacher rally in Raleigh. Mark Johnson told WLOS-TV that while he supports teachers, he feels choosing a school day to protest was a bad idea. He was critical of the North Carolina Association of Educators for scheduling it in the middle of the week when weather has already caused a number of closures this year. More than three-dozen districts across North Carolina have canceled class today.

Liquid Asphalt Spills Into Creeks After Wreck

(McDowell County, NC) -- Emergency officials are monitoring creeks in McDowell County that were contaminated with liquid asphalt yesterday. It happened when a tractor trailer overturned along Highway 226 in the North Cove community. Hazmat teams spent all day trying to control the spill from entering the North Fork River. Residents and visitors are warned to avoid contact with Coxes Creek, Armstrong Creek and the North Fork Catawba River near the highway.

Linville Gorge Fire Under Control

(Nebo, NC) -- A fire in Linville Gorge is under control. It took a team of more than 50 firefighters to contain flames on several acres near Linville River at the end of the Brushy Ridge Trail on Monday. They came back out yesterday to make sure hot spots weren't flaring up. The U.S. Forest Service still believes it started at an abandoned campfire on Sunday.

Tuesday Called Worst Day In History At UNC Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- Governor Roy Cooper says the entire state is supporting the community at UNC Charlotte. Chancellor Philip Dubois called it the worst day in the history of the university after a former student allegedly killed two people and injured four more on campus Tuesday. A candlelight vigil starts at six this evening at the Star Quad. Final exams were canceled through Sunday.

CMS Teachers Head To Raleigh For Rally

(Charlotte, NC) -- North Carolina teachers are rallying in Raleigh today. The CMS district is joining more than three-dozen others around the state in closing for the rally. Thousands are expected to be in downtown Raleigh to protest for higher pay, more support staff and Medicaid expansion. State Superintendent Mark Johnson was critical of the North Carolina Association of Educators for scheduling it in the middle of the week.

Elderly Man Killed While Crossing I-85

(Charlotte, NC) -- An elderly man who was hit by a car yesterday on I-85 near the Glenwood Drive exit is dead. State troopers say the out-of-town man pulled over on the northbound shoulder because he and his wife were lost. He was struck while trying to cross the interstate to ask a DOT worker for directions. The driver won't face charges.

Suspect Taken In After SWAT Standoff

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD says a suspect is in custody after a SWAT standoff yesterday. A man allegedly barricaded himself inside a home on Coulee Place in southwest Charlotte for around six-hours before giving up. WSOC-TV is reporting that he may be the suspect of a homicide.

Wells Fargo Inks Five-Year Deal At Quail Hollow

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Wells Fargo Championship is here to stay for a few years. Tournament officials said yesterday that a five-year deal has been signed that will keep the championship at Quail Hollow Golf Club through 2024. Tour pros tee it up tomorrow for the first round. The winner is expected to take home at least one-point-four-million-dollars.

Police ID UNC Charlotte Suspect

(Charlotte, NC) -- Police are identifying the suspect in the deadly shooting at UNC Charlotte as Trystan Andrew Terrell. The 22-year-old was arrested yesterday after police say he opened fire at the North Carolina campus, killing two people and injuring four others. Three of those injured are in the hospital fighting for their lives. Charges against Terrell are pending.

NC Senate Overrides Governor Cooper's Veto For Abortion Bill

(Raleigh, NC) -- The North Carolina Senate is overriding Governor Roy Cooper's abortion bill veto. Cooper recently shot down the bill that aimed to make it a felony for an abortion doctor to not try to save the life of a baby born alive as a result of a botched abortion. Yesterday, the Senate managed to reach the three-fifths majority needed to override the veto with the help of just one Democrat who crossed party lines. Republicans may have a tougher time getting the majority they need in the House. They're set to vote on the matter tomorrow.

Arrest Made In Nearly 50 Year Cold Case Murder

(Johnston Co., NC) -- An arrest has been made in a Johnston County cold case murder. This week, a homeless 65-year-old man was arrested in Florida for the 1972 murder of Bonnie Neighbors. She was found bound and shot dead near Benson with her four-month-old baby alive next to her. Larry Joe Scott was tied to the crime by DNA evidence. He's behind bars in Florida charged with her kidnapping and murder. Scott is awaiting extradition.

Three Die In Durham Crash

(Durham, NC) -- The Highway Patrol is investigating a crash in Durham that killed three people. They say yesterday afternoon a black Mercedes crashed into a Cadillac head-on on Highway 751. Troopers say two people in the Cadillac died and so did one person in the Mercedes. The driver of the Mercedes survived, they were taken to the hospital and are expected to face charges.

Cary Youth Minister Charged With Sexually Exploiting Children

(Cary, NC) -- A youth minister is facing child sex crime charges in Wake County. Thirty-four-year-old David Kimball, of the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Cary, is charged with four felony counts of sexually exploiting children. Cary police say they found sexually explicit images of preteen children on his computer. Kimball is a part time photographer, but police still aren't sure of who took the pictures. He posted 30-thousand-dollars bond and is due back in court later this month.

Hurricanes Prepare For Games 3 And 4 At Home This Week

(Raleigh, NC) -- The Hurricanes play game three tonight. They lead the New York Islanders two to zero in this round of the playoffs. The Hurricanes host New York, and they've yet to lose a home playoff game this year. If they win tonight, they have a chance to end this playoff series early at home on Friday.

Five School Districts Shut Down For Teacher Rally

(King, NC) -- Five school districts in the Piedmont Triad are closed today for a teacher rally at the state's Capitol. They include Winston-Salem/Forsyth, Davie and Guilford county schools, as well as Lexington and Thomasville city schools. Stokes County Schools will not close for the rally. Instead, teachers at Piney Grove Middle School are hosting a "walk-in" to teach the public about how public schools operate.

Greensboro Charged In Connection With Worker's Death

(Greensboro, NC) -- The city of Greensboro is facing a 26-thousand-dollar fine in connection with the death of one of its workers. Twenty-eight-year-old Sheria Stringer died last November when she fell from a city water tower. The North Carolina Department of Labor cited Greensboro with four serious violations. The city has 15 days to respond to the citation.

Man Arrested In Connection With 2016 Killing In Greensboro

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police are announcing an arrest in connection with a 2016 killing. Twenty-five-year-old Gary Everett was taken into custody yesterday on suspicion of murder and concealing a death. He's accused of killing Darace Bolton, who vanished three years ago. Bolton's remains were found in 2018 in Burnswick County.

Driver Killed In Greensboro Car Wreck

(Greensboro, NC) -- A driver is dead after a car crash in Greensboro. It happened early yesterday morning on Muirs Chapel Road, near Meade Drive. Police say a Mercedes Benz ran off the road and hit several objects before stopping. The driver died in the crash. Police say speed and impairment appear to be factors.
