Asheville Graduate Dies In Shooting, Called A Hero
(Asheville, NC) -- One of the victims in this week's deadly shooting at UNC-Charlotte is an Asheville graduate. Investigators say Riley Howell lost his life while he jumped on the suspect as gunfire erupted inside a building on the campus Tuesday night. Howell graduated from T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville and attended Asheville-Buncombe Tech before heading to Charlotte. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said Howell saved lives.
Police: UNC Charlotte Shooting Suspect Targeted Building
(Charlotte, NC) -- Investigators believe the suspect in the UNC Charlotte shootings intentionally targeted the scene of the crime. Witnesses say Trystan Terrell walked into an Anthropology lecture in the Kennedy Building Tuesday night and opened fire, which killed two students and injured four others. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are still trying to figure out the motive, but Chief Kerr Putney says he targeted that building on purpose. Terrell is expected to appear in court today.
Teachers Rally In Pack Square
(Asheville, NC) -- Teachers in Western North Carolina are trying to make their messages for change clear. WLOS-TV says around 200 teachers and supporters rallied in Asheville's Pack Square yesterday just as a statewide rally was held in Raleigh. They're seeking more support staff for students and higher pay. The crowd included teachers from Asheville City Schools and others from Buncombe County Schools who had to take a day off to attend.
Driver Dies In Single-Car Wreck In Henderson County
(Henderson County, NC) -- State troopers are investigating a deadly single-car wreck in Henderson County. An SUV reportedly ran off Dana Road and overturned early Wednesday morning. Investigators told WLOS-TV that speed and alcohol may have led to the crash. A Hendersonville man was ejected and died at the scene.
A-B Tech President Retiring
(Asheville, NC) -- The president of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College is retiring. Dennis King advised the college yesterday that he'll step down at the end of January 2020, in hopes they can find a replacement in nine months. He has served as president for six years. The head of school at Carolina Day in Asheville also announced plans to leave at the end of this school year.
City Leaders Study Ways To Turn Retail Space Into Housing
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville officials are studying ways to turn old retail property into housing developments. The Citizen-Times is reporting that the city will gather public input this month on a plan to rezone four properties totaling 145 acres into mixed-use projects called Urban Centers. Some of those properties include the Innsbruck Mall area and Patton Avenue.
CMS Returns To Class After Rally
(Charlotte, NC) -- CMS classes are back in session one day after a large teacher rally in Raleigh. Thousands gathered in downtown to fight for better pay and more support staff. Some of that pay includes 15-dollars-an-hour for non-certified workers. WBTV is reporting that some CMS cafeteria workers that make 12-dollars-an-hour were there in Raleigh. Around 40-percent of CMS employees make less than the 15-bucks-an-hour teachers are demanding.
Chancellor Says Community's Strength Will Be Tested
(Charlotte, NC) -- UNC Charlotte Chancellor Phil Dubois says the next few weeks and months will test the community's collective strength. He spoke in front of over seven-thousand people last night during a vigil at the university's gymnasium. Several buildings in uptown were lit in 49er green last night to show support for the school.
CMPD Investigates Homicide Close To UNCC
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a homicide just minutes from the campus of UNC Charlotte. Officers say one person was shot to death during an altercation at the University Village apartments last night. WSOC-TV reports the victim isn't affiliated with the university. Two others were injured.

Hurricanes Stomp The Islanders In Game Three
(Raleigh, NC) -- The Hurricanes are making their presence known in the NHL playoffs. Yesterday in Raleigh, they beat the New York Islanders 5-2 in game three. The Canes now have a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Islanders. They face off again tomorrow in Raleigh. If the Hurricanes continue to dominate at home, Friday's game will be their last before they move one step closer to the Stanley Cup.
May First Teachers Rally Called A Success, Lawmakers Move To Prevent Another
(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina teachers are calling on lawmakers for more education funding. Yesterday, thousands of teachers came out to Raleigh to rally for a number of things they think will make schools stronger. A number of school districts canceled classes yesterday because of the anticipated number of teacher absences. Organizers called the rally a gigantic success. However, state lawmakers are looking to try to prevent teachers from rallying on school days again. They added a change to the proposed budget that would prevent classes being canceled for things like this.
Two UNC Charlotte Students Injured In Shooting Were From Apex
(Charlotte, NC) -- Two UNC Charlotte students from Apex were injured in this week's shooting. The shooting happened on Monday, killing two students and injuring four. Drew Pescaro and Sean Dehart, both of Apex, were shot and are in the hospital recovering. Twenty-two-year-old Trystan Terrell was charged with murder and attempted murder. His motive isn't known and he remains behind bars.
Man Charged After Crash That Sent Four People To The Hospital
(Wake Forest, NC) -- Four people are injured after a crash caused by a high speed chase in Wake Forest. Wake County deputies say they started chasing a car yesterday on Capital Boulevard that they believed had been involved in a wreck. That car crashed into an SUV and two motorcycles on South Main Street. Two people on the motorcycles were injured and two people in the SUV were too, but they're all expected to survive. Nineteen-year-old Myron Franks was arrested trying to run away. He was charged with a number of crimes including felony hit-and-run.
Johnston County Road Rage Arrest
(Clayton, NC) -- A Johnston County man is facing criminal charges stemming from a road rage incident. Police say the incident happened this weekend at the drive-thru of a Clayton McDonald's. Witnesses say Brandon Gonzalez Rubio refused to move, and when a woman drove around him, he rammed into her car. Reports say he then started hitting and kicking her car. Gonzalez Rubio was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and injury to personal property. No one was injured.
Durham Police ID Man Found Stabbed To Death In Intersection
(Durham, NC) -- Durham police are investigating after a man was found stabbed to death in an intersection. They say on Sunday night, 58-year-old John Mason was found stabbed at the intersection of South Roxboro Street and East Cornwallis Road. Police are still investigating and have yet to file charges. No suspect information has been released and anyone with information on the crime is asked to call Durham police or CrimeStoppers.
Charlotte Police Provide Update On UNCC Shooting
(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte Police are taking the lead in the investigation after a shooter opened fire on the campus of UNCC. Twenty-two-year-old Trystan Terrell was charged with two counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder. Two students were shot and killed and four students were hurt in the Tuesday afternoon attack. Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles says the White House has reached out and offered any help the city may need.
Developer Announces Large Greensboro Project
(Greensboro, NC) -- A huge development is coming to downtown Greensboro. Developer Roy Carroll says the project will include 280 luxury residential units, tens-of-thousands of square-feet of retail space, a 150-room Aloft Hotel and an office tower. It's called "Carroll South of Ballpark." Construction on the three-phase project is set to begin in late 2020.
Woman Shot, Killed By Davidson Co. Sheriff's Deputies In Welcome
(Welcome, NC) -- An investigation is underway in Davidson County where sheriff's deputies shot and killed the suspect in a convenience store hold-up. Forty-five-year-old April Robertson is accused of holding a Sheetz employee at knifepoint Tuesday night in Welcome. Deputies responded to the scene and shot and killed the woman when she refused to drop her knife. The employee suffered minor injuries.
Teachers Rally In NC For More Pay
(Raleigh, NC) -- Teachers in North Carolina are protesting for more pay. Teachers from all over the state gathered in Raleigh yesterday, demanding pay increases and more school resources. Classes were cancelled for five districts in the Triad to allow the teachers to take part. Similar pay marches have recently taken place in Los Angeles, Virginia, Denver, West Virginia, Oakland, Kentucky and Sacramento.
Tow Truck Driver Arrested In Connection With Deadly Motorcycle Wreck
(Guilford Co., NC) -- State troopers are announcing an arrest in connection with a deadly motorcycle verse tow truck crash in Guilford County. The accident happened this past weekend near Sumner and Old Randleman roads. Troopers say a motorcycle crashed into the back of a tow truck that was illegally parked. Seventy-year-old Patricia Willard was killed and her 70-year-old husband, Jerry, was critically injured. The tow truck driver, Jessica Middlebrook, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and improper parking.
