WNC Remembers Howell
(Waynesville, NC) -- Western North Carolina is remembering a UNC Charlotte student who lost his life trying to save others last week. Close to two-thousand people packed out the Stuart Auditorium in Lake Junaluska yesterday afternoon for the memorial service of Riley Howell. He was a Waynesville native and graduated from T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville. The 21-year-old died last week as he tried to stop suspected gunman Trystan Terrell on the campus of UNC Charlotte. One friend from Roberson thanked Howell for being his hero before he was everyone else's.
Hikers Rescued From Trail
(Transylvania County, NC) -- Transylvania County emergency crews say a couple of injured hikers were rescued over the weekend. They were found on the South Mills River Trail. There's no word on their condition.
Suspect Sentenced For Hit-And-Run
(Buncombe County, NC) -- A man is heading to prison for nearly six years for running away from a head-on wreck in Buncombe County. It was just over a year ago when Michael Waddell drove his SUV over the center line on Beaverdam Road and slammed into a car. Police say he helped pull the driver out before running away on foot. The Citizen-Times is reporting that Waddell pleaded guilty on April 30th to felony hit and run and driving with a revoked license.
Watauga Native Nominated For NC Music Hall
(Watauga County, NC) -- A Watauga County musician is heading into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. It was announced last week that the late Merle Watson will be inducted into the 2019 class, just one year after his father Doc Watson was inducted. The music festival, MerleFest, was named after the Deep Gap native. He won two Grammys in the 1970s and was nominated for a handful more.
Injured Cyclist Rescued Returned To Safety
(Brevard, NC) -- A cyclist is now safe after a trail rescue was completed by almost three dozen workers in Brevard. The Transylvania County Rescue Squad says the cyclist was stuck on Bennett Gap Trail with an ankle injury and had borderline hypothermia Saturday night. It took around five hours for 33 rescue crew members to bring the cyclist to safety. The rescue was made more difficult because of the muddy terrain.
American Airlines Adds Asheville Flights
(Asheville, NC) -- American Airlines is adding more flights out of Asheville. Flights to Dallas-Fort Worth, Philadelphia and LaGuardia International began over the weekend at Asheville Regional Airport. The airport reached one-million passengers for the first time last year and now has 19 nonstop destinations.
Mooresville Officer Shot To Death
(Mooresville, NC) -- The Mooresville Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own. Officer Jordan Sheldon was shot and killed during a traffic stop on West Plaza Drive on Saturday night. The suspect was found dead in a nearby apartment from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. Police Chief Damon Williams said yesterday that words can't compare to how the department's officers are feeling.

Suspect In Deadly Stabbing Arrested
(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect who allegedly stabbed a teen to death in Charlotte is in jail. The 19-year-old was found near Bending Branch Road and Denbur Drive in east Charlotte Saturday night. The CMPD arrested 20-year-old Tylek Hamilton for murder. He remains in jail with no bond.
Suspect Arrested For University Apartments Murder
(Charlotte, NC) -- One man is now charged with a murder that happened close to campus the night after the shooting at UNC Charlotte. Quay Davis was found shot near the pool area of the University Village apartments. Officers believe it happened during an altercation with Juan Concepción-Pérez. The CMPD said on Saturday that the SBI and Secret Service helped arrest Pérez. He is in jail for first-degree murder.
Brothers Charged In Deadly Hit-And-Run
(Charlotte, NC) -- Two brothers charged in a deadly hit-and-run are expected to appear in Mecklenburg County court today. Scott and Zachary McMannes were arrested after they allegedly dragged a man alongside their car in a drug deal gone wrong early Saturday morning. It happened on Trinity Road off Beatties Ford Road. Officers found the victim lying in the middle of the road after the brothers allegedly drove off.
Wells Fargo Champ Is First-Time Winner
(Charlotte, NC) -- Sunday's champion at Quail Hollow Golf Club is a first-time PGA tour winner. Max Homa finished off a final round of four-under to win the Wells Fargo Championship by three shots over Joel Dahmen just before darkness. Storms that pushed through the Queen City late Sunday afternoon caused a one hour delay. Homa is now qualified for golf's next major, the PGA Championship.
Murder Charges For The Death Of Lady
(Fairmont, NC) -- A Robeson County man is accused of killing an older lady. Deputies say 78-year-old Annie Davis was found dead from stab wounds at her Fairmont home yesterday morning. They arrested 27-year-old Martin Oliver later that day and charged him with her murder. Deputies say he grew up in her neighborhood and knew her. Oliver is being held without bond, the motive for the crime isn't known.
Man Found Dead In A Car
(Raleigh, NC) -- Raleigh police are investigating after a man was found dead inside a car. They say the body of 34-year-old Keonte Gause was found yesterday morning inside a car parked at the Wake Forest Road Denny's. Officials say they're looking at this as a homicide, and they're looking for two people they think might be witnesses. Anyone who might have information is asked to call 9-1-1 or Crime Stoppers.
One Person Dead After Shooting In Durham
(Durham, NC) -- Durham police are investigating a shooting that left one person dead. They say on Saturday, someone shot two people at the intersection of Colfax Street and Linwood Avenue. One man was pronounced dead at the scene and the other victim was taken to the hospital with less serious injuries. No suspect information has been released and anyone with information is asked to call police.
Former Harnett County School Goes Up In Flames
(Harnett Co., NC) -- A former Harnett County school is toast. On Saturday night, a fire broke out at the former Boone Trail Elementary School on Old US 421 near Sanford. The school was over 90-years-old, and had been vacated in 2010 since the new Boone Trail Elementary opened. The building had been used for a community center and no one was inside at the time of the fire. There were no injuries, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Some think that lightning from heavy storms at the time may have been the culprit.
NC Officer Dead After Routine Traffic Stop
(Mooresville, NC) -- A North Carolina police officer is dead following a routine traffic stop. According to the Mooresville Police Department, 32-year-old K-9 Officer Jordan Sheldon died from his injuries after being shot Saturday night. The suspect in the shooting fled the scene, but was later located in a nearby apartment. When officers entered the home, they found the suspect, 28-year-old Michael Aldana, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Sheldon served the Mooresville Police Department for six years.
Man And Woman Sought In Connection With Prostitution Ring
(Graham, NC) -- Alamance County deputies are looking for a man and a woman who are believed to be involved in the commercial sex industry. Twenty-seven-year-old Christopher Stevenson and 28-year-old Amanda Starr, both of Graham, are facing kidnapping and sexual servitude charges. Deputies started investigating reports of a missing person this past weekend. The victim was found but was believed to have been held against their will. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.
VA Man Arrested In Connection With Deadly Wreck Involving Rural Hall
(Russell Co., VA) -- A Virginia man is under arrest in connection with the deaths of two women from Rural Hall. Fifty-one-year-old Treymane Ferguson is accused of causing the car crash that killed 47-year-old Candace Barnes and 66-year-old Brenda Fields. The head-on wreck happened Friday night along Route 19 in Russell County, Virginia. State police say Ferguson was heading south in the northbound lane.
Lexington Officer Hurt By Alleged Drunk Driver
(Lexington, NC) -- A Lexington police officer is hurt after a wreck involving an alleged drunk driver. It happened early yesterday morning at North Main and Fifth streets. Police say Tamra Tutterow ran a red light and hit the officer's vehicle, pushing it into a power pole. The unidentified officer was rushed to a local hospital but has since been released. The driver was charged wit DWI.
