(Asheville, NC) -- Jury selection is now underway for the Asheville trial of a man accused of killing his girlfriend and her unborn baby. Investigators say Nathaniel Dixon shot Candace Pickens to death in 2016. The shooting also injured a toddler. Dixon could face the death penalty if he's found guilty of murder.
Raleigh Businessman Files For U.S. Senate Race
(Raleigh, NC) -- Republican Thom Tillis has some opposition in his bid for re-election to the U.S. Senate. The News & Observer is reporting that retired Raleigh businessman Garland Tucker filed paperwork yesterday to run in the GOP primary. The Tillis campaign says Garland is an anti-Trump activist. Garland is the former CEO of the Triangle Capital Corporation.
Driver Slams Into State Trooper's Car
(Madison County, NC) -- A driver is being accused of ramming a state trooper's car yesterday on I-26 in Madison County. The trooper reportedly tried to pull the car over near Woodfin in Buncombe County for a registration violation. The driver led officers on a chase until close to the Tennessee line, where a road block was set up. The suspect's car slammed into the rear of the cruiser. No one was seriously injured.
Asheville Airport Runway Shuts Down
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville airport officials say the runway was shut down for a short time yesterday due to a plane malfunction. WLOS-TV is reporting a small aircraft had problems with its landing gear on the way into Asheville Regional. The runway was shut down while the aircraft was towed. No one was injured.
Pair Arrested With Meth
(Marion, NC) -- Two women are being accused of possessing a couple of pounds of meth in Marion. Deputies raided a home in late April and allegedly found the drugs with over 25-thousand-dollars in cash. Linda Mace and Joanna Julius were arrested at the home.
Forest Service Plans Timber Sale On 21-Thousand Acres
(Murphy, NC) -- The U.S. Forest Service is proposing to sell off timber from a 21-thousand acre tract in Clay County. Supporters of the Buck Project believe its a way to maintain health on the forest floor. The public can comment on the environmental assessment until May 10th. The Citizen-Times is reporting it would be one of the largest timber sales in Nantahala Forest's history.
Services Planned For Fallen Mooresville Police Officer
(Mooresville, NC) -- A celebration of life is being held for a Mooresville police officer who died in the line of duty last weekend. Officer Jordan Sheldon was shot and killed during a traffic stop. Supporters are invited to gather in the Town Hall Lawn on North Main Street in Mooresville tomorrow night from 6:30 to 8:30. Officer Sheldon's funeral services will be held on Friday morning at the Cavalry Church in Charlotte.
Alleged UNC Charlotte Shooter Indicted
(Charlotte, NC) -- The alleged UNC Charlotte shooter is facing indictments of murder. The grand jury handed down 16 indictments yesterday on Trystan Terrell, including two counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder. It was a week ago today when Terrell allegedly went inside a campus classroom and opened fire. The shooting killed two and injured four.
CMPD Investigates Homicide In East Charlotte
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a deadly shooting in east Charlotte. Officers found a man shot to death laying in the middle of Washburn Avenue late Sunday night. The officers were already in the area on another call when they heard the shots ring out. No suspects have been arrested.
Attendees Of Beer Festival Unhappy
(Charlotte, NC) -- Some people are unhappy about how a Charlotte beer festival turned out last Saturday at Bank of America Stadium. A crowd of around ten-thousand showed up at the first-ever Untappd Beer Festival, only to have the weather turn sour. The event was moved into the stadium's concourse for a while, and the beer stopped flowing. Customers went on social media to complain about the long lines and some reported cheap souvenir glasses the festival gave out. Untapped organizers later issued an apology and offered refunds for those who couldn't get in due to weather.
RV Set On Fire
(Charlotte, NC) -- CMPD Investigators are looking for three suspects who set an RV on fire last Friday. They were allegedly caught on security camera at a home on Sheryl Circle in southwest Charlotte. The RV belongs to an elderly couple who planned on taking it on one more vacation, but now it's unknown if the vehicle can be used again. The suspects were also accused of breaking into the RV.
Four Panthers Inducted Into Hall Of Honor
(Charlotte, NC) -- Four former Carolina Panthers are being inducted into the team's Hall of Honor. The players are Jake Delhomme, Jordan Gross, Steve Smith Senior and Wesley Walls. They'll be the first to be inducted into the Hall of Honor in 15 years. Panthers' owner David Tepper said yesterday that each one of the inductees have made a tremendous impact on and off the field.
Wake County Officials Propose Property Tax Hike For 2020 Budget
(Wake Co., NC) -- Wake County officials are looking at increasing taxes to better fund the school system. The proposed 2020 Wake County budget asks for a property tax increase of more than eight-percent to balance the nearly one-and-a-half-billion-dollar budget. The budget sets aside 36-million-dollars more for the Wake County Public School System than they did last year. There will be public meetings later this month to further discuss the budget, and a vote is set for June.
Toddler Hospitalized After Being Hit By Car
(Cary, NC) -- Cary police are investigating after a toddler was hit by a car. They say last night, a one-year-old child was hit by a vehicle driven by its mother in a driveway on a dead end street. The child was seriously injured and rushed to WakeMed. The child's condition isn't known. Police are trying to figure out how this happened or if charges will be filed.
Two Shot Outside Of Sweepstakes Parlor
(Raleigh, NC) -- Two men shot outside a Raleigh sweepstakes parlor are expected to survive. Police say the two victims won some money at the parlor and were heading to their car yesterday morning when they were almost robbed. They say two masked men approached them on Capital Boulevard, and shot the victims when they tried to run away. One was hit in the hand, the other was hit in the leg. They were able to get to the hospital after flagging down a cop. No arrests have been made.
Durham Homicides Up Compared To 2018
(Durham, NC) -- Homicides are up in Durham. Yesterday, Police Chief C.J. Davis told the city council that including two homicides on Saturday, the city now has 17 homicides this year. At this time last year, the city only had nine. Crime is up in nearly all categories across the board in Durham, with the exception of burglaries and aggravated assaults. One councilman said he's worried because homicides tend to rise during summer months.
Woman Accused Of Biting Deputy While Trying To Swallow Crack
(Edgecombe Co., NC) -- A woman is accused of biting an Edgecombe County deputy while she was trying to swallow crack. Police say they pulled over Rebecca Carter on Sunday when she was going to pick up her husband who had just been released from jail. They loaded her into a patrol car, but a deputy said he saw her stuff a plastic bag in her mouth. He tried to squeeze her cheeks to keep her from swallowing it, but he said she chomped down on his thumb so hard she broke skin. Carter was charged with felony possession of cocaine, marijuana and assault on a government official.
Father Says Driver Pointed A Gun At Him Outside Elementary School
(Durham, NC) -- Durham police are looking into an incident where a father dropping his kid off at an elementary school said he got a gun pointed at him. CBS17 reports that the father said he honked at a car that had just cut him off on Friday in the drop-off lane at Hillandale Elementary School. He said he went to talk to the driver who quickly stuck a gun in his face. A police report was filed and officers say the man could be charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm on school grounds.
NC Woman Accused Of Plotting Husband's Death Could Get Parole
(Raleigh, NC) -- A Guilford County woman who plotted the death of her husband for his life insurance benefits could get parole. Sixty-seven-year-old Donna Westbrooks has been locked up for 25 years. She enlisted two friends back in the early 1990s to kill her husband and then promised to split the insurance payout with them. The state parole commission said yesterday it's considering allowing Westbrooks to be released on parole.
Winston-Salem Man Sentenced In 30-Year-Old Rape Case
(Undated) -- A Winston-Salem man will spend a year behind bars in connection with a rape case dating back to the 1980s. Sixty-three-year-old Arnold Lasseter pleaded guilty yesterday to six counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor. He was given a suspended six-year sentence, an active 12 month sentence and two years of supervised probation. Lasseter must also register as a sex offender. The victim says the abuse started when she was just six-years-old and lasted until she was 16.
Three People Arrested After Man Beaten, Tossed Over Bridge
(Alamance Co., NC) -- Three people are behind bars, accused of beating a man, tossing him over a bridge and then stealing his car. Twenty-nine-year-olds Samuel Murrell and Brittney Darnell, and 26-year-old David Richardson are all facing charges. Deputies say the victim, who's from Raleigh, met Darnell online and then drove to her house in Mebane where he was attacked by the two male suspects. The victim was beaten with a baseball bat and a tire iron, bound with tape and then tossed over a bridge in Granville County. He managed to find help, and all three suspects were taken into custody shortly afterward.
Winston-Salem Man Indicted In Double-Stabbing Death
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A Winston-Salem man is under arrest in the June 2017 stabbing deaths of his two roommates. Forty-six-year-old Tyrone Gladden was indicted yesterday on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of dismembering human remains. He's accused of killing 36-year-old Gary Craig Junior and 40-year-old Devetta Campbell, then dismembering their bodies, wrapping them up in carpet and hiding them in a wooded area behind their apartment. The victims' remains were found about two weeks later.
One Man Dead, Two Arrested Following High Point Shooting
(High Point, NC) -- One man is dead and two others are arrested after a shooting in High Point. It happened at Oaks Silver Ridge Apartments on East Martin Luther King Junior Drive. Police say 23-year-old William Jones of Greensboro was shot and killed. Eighteen-year-old Marquies Chander and 26-year-old William Carter were arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted robbery. Police say it started as a possible drug deal.
