Possible Mental Exams For Mother Accused In Attempted Murder

(Hendersonville, NC) -- An Asheville woman who is charged in the attempted murder of her baby is expected to undergo mental health exams. The attorneys for Krista Madden have requested she be transferred to the UNC Center for Women's Mood Disorders in Chapel Hill. District Attorney Greg Newman told the Citizen-Times he has no problem with the request since she'll still be in custody. Madden was arrested a week ago after allegedly faking the kidnapping of her seven-week-old daughter and tossing her down a ravine in Henderson County.

North Carolina Sues E-Cig Manufacturer JUUL

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina is the first state to sue e-cigarette manufacturer JUUL. Attorney General Josh Stein said yesterday the company designed and marketed its product to attract younger customers and misrepresented the dangers of nicotine. Stein says the basis for the lawsuit is that JUUL violated North Carolina's Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act. JUUL holds at least 75-percent of the e-cigarette market and use of their product is rampant among teens.

Macon County Deputy Indicted For Deadly Wreck

(Macon County, NC) -- A Macon County deputy is facing charges in a deadly wreck. Deputy Cody Mitchell reportedly hydroplaned on U.S. 64 while taking a Franklin man home in February. The car flipped several times, which killed the man. A Macon County grand jury indicted the deputy earlier this week for misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Deputy Claims Self-Defense In Dog Shooting

(Haywood County, NC) -- A Haywood County deputy says he shot a dog last week out of self-defense. Deputy Brandon Pless drove out to a home in Maggie Valley to file a larceny report and found the front door wide open. He claims he fired his gun after the dog charged at him twice and bit one of his boots. The dog died at the animal hospital. The dog's owner told WLOS-TV that he isn't seeking financial compensation.

Fire Rips Through Madison County Home

(Madison County, NC) -- Western North Carolina firefighters believe a home fire started in a wood-burning stove last night in Madison County. Flames erupted from a home on Eller Ford Road in the Jupiter community just after 9 p.m. One person and some pets were able to make it out without being injured. The home may have been destroyed.

Henderson County Leaders Okay With Highway Expansion

(Hendersonville, NC) -- The plan to widen Highway 191 in Henderson County is moving forward. County Manager Steve Wyatt said last night that commissioners won't take action to stop the DOT's plan to increase the highway from two lanes to four with a median. Some residents have shown concern that it's still going to be dangerous with extra traffic. Construction won't start for another two years after land is purchased.

UNCC Shooting Victim Honored With Medal Of Valor

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is honoring a UNC Charlotte student who died jumping on a gunman on the campus two weeks ago. The family of Riley Howell accepted the Citizen Medal of Valor during an awards ceremony hosted by the department last night. Police Chief Kerr Putney said Riley chose in a split second to fight, and what he did was extraordinary. Howell was one of two students who were killed and four others injured in the campus shooting.

Ninth District Candidates Already Jabbing Each Other

(Charlotte, NC) -- The candidates in the ninth district congressional race aren't wasting any time taking digs at each other. New Republican primary winner Dan Bishop showed up outside Dan McCready's campaign headquarters yesterday in Charlotte with a cardboard cutout of the Democrat. Bishop said the cutout has as much to say as his challenger. McCready later shot back, calling Bishop's agenda possibly the worst North Carolina has ever seen.

Salisbury Murder Suspect Arrested

(Salisbury, NC) -- The suspect in a Salisbury murder two days ago is now in jail. Salisbury Police say a 19-year-old woman was shot while riding in a car at North Long and 11th streets on Tuesday. The suspected gunman opened fire from inside another car. Jeffrey Hooker was arrested for murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle.

Suspect Accused Of Shooting At People With BB Gun

(Charlotte, NC) -- An 18-year-old is being accused of shooting at people with a BB gun in west Charlotte. One man told WSOC-TV that he was standing at a bus stop on Wilkinson Boulevard Monday morning when someone started shooting from a nearby car. He says the car then pulled up to another bus stop and did the same thing. The suspect was arrested and charged the same day.

Firefighters Okay After Injuries In Statesville Blaze

(Statesville, NC) -- Two firefighters injured while battling a blaze in Statesville yesterday are okay. Crews rushed out to a small apartment complex on West Sharp Street after fire broke out in a first-floor bedroom. About half of the building was damaged. Eight people were forced to find another place to stay.

Charlotte Streetcar Closing During Road Work

(Charlotte, NC) -- The streetcar in Charlotte is shutting down soon for quite a while. The Charlotte Area Transit System is in the midst of a project that will extend the line to nearly three times its length and three times as many stops. Completing the plan means the trolley line between Elizabeth and uptown will be out of commission for a year-and-a-half beginning in June. Sleeker, updated streetcars will take the place of the traditional-looking trolley.

Amtrak Hits Truck In Durham County

(Durham Co., NC) -- It appears an Amtrak train hit a truck in Durham County. WTVD reported yesterday that the train hit a pickup truck yesterday afternoon off Wrenn Road, near the Wake County line. The train was headed to Charlotte from Raleigh. No details have been released yet on whether anyone was hurt.

Durham Water Woes

(Durham, NC) -- Folks in Durham say the water smells funny. For weeks, algae has been blooming in the city's water sources, giving tap water a funky smell and taste. City workers are adding copper sulfate to the water to hopefully offset the unpleasant taste. They say it's safe to drink, but some say they don't want to. The water could be back to normal in a matter of days.

Warm Weather Coming To Raleigh

(Raleigh, NC) -- The warmest weather of the year is right around the corner for Raleigh. Forecasters say that this weekend, Central North Carolina could see highs in the 90s. It's expected to stay mostly dry this weekend. Warmer than normal temperatures could stick around until Memorial Day.

(Durham Co., NC) -- A Burton Magnet Elementary School teacher is the Durham Public School teacher of the year. Last night, a banquet was thrown to honor Teacher of the Year, Brandon Daniel. He is a fifth grade teacher who was nominated by his peers earlier this year. There were five outstanding finalists, but Daniel really stood out.

Two Die In Atlantic Beach

(Atlantic Beach, NC) -- A man from Johnston County and his girlfriend's child are dead after being pulled out to sea at Atlantic Beach. Police say 24-year-old Austin Potter jumped into the water yesterday to help the boy who was struggling in a rip current. Sadly, neither of them survived. The family is planning a memorial at the beach. Police say to watch out for warnings at the beach and make sure the water is safe before diving in.

Carrboro Shooting

(Carrboro, NC) -- Carrboro police are investigating a shooting. They say yesterday afternoon someone was shot on the 100-block of Della Street. Police said the call was initially for a home invasion, but they're not exactly sure if that's what it was yet. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police say no suspects are in custody and ask anyone with information to call.

Several Units Damaged In Kernersville Fire

(Kernersville, NC) -- Several apartment units are damaged after a complex in Kernersville caught fire. It was reported just before 4 p.m. yesterday at Donnell Villas Apartments on Donnell Street. Officials say seven or eight units were damaged. No one was hurt. There's no word yet on what caused the fire.

Driver Crashes Into House In High Point

(High Point, NC) -- A family is homeless after a car crashed into their house that was built by Habitat for Humanity. It happened yesterday morning near Hoskins Street and Davis Avenue in High Point. Police say a young driver mistook the gas pedal for the break pedal and plowed into the home. No one was hurt. The family was told their home is not safe to live in until repairs can be made.

Car Crashes Into Mexican Restaurant In Winston-Salem

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- No one is hurt after a 16-year-old boy slammed his car into a restaurant in Winston-Salem. The scene unfolded yesterday afternoon at La Casa Lopez Mexican Grill on Healy Drive. Police say the teen was parking when he accidentally accelerated and crashed into the front wall of the restaurant. The owners posted on Facebook that they'll be closed for the next few days.

NC Woman Wins Mother's Day Lottery Prize

(Sampson Co., NC) -- A North Carolina woman is a millionaire thanks to a generous Mother's Day gift from her sister. The Greensboro News and Record reports Vielka Roman of Sampson County was gifted a lottery ticket for Mother's Day and won one-point-three-million dollars. It's the third-largest jackpot ever in the Carolina Cash 5 game. The winning ticket was purchased at a Carlie C's IGA store in Fayetteville.
