Five Men Arrested In Connection With Asheville Shootout
(Asheville, NC) -- Five men are under arrest and one man is still wanted in connection with a shootout at an Asheville apartment complex. It happened June 9th at Hillcrest Apartments on Atkinson Street. One person was shot but is expected to be okay. Five men were arrested on charges ranging from Assault with a Deadly Weapon to Intent to Terrorize the Public. Police say they're still looking for Javin Whiteside and are asking anyone with information to call their department.
Search Warrants Detail Horrific Alexander Co. Triple-Murder
(Alexander Co., NC) -- Newly-released search warrants are detailing the horrific killings of an Alexander County mother and her two children. Deputies believe Maria Calderon and her eleven and 12-year-old kids were murdered at their Taylorsville home last weekend before it was set on fire. Areli Aguirre-Avilez and his 16-year-old girlfriend, Heidi Wolfe, are both charged with three counts of first-degree murder. The two are believed to have dumped the woman's body in the Catawba River before setting the family's mobile home on fire to cover up the killings.
Asheville City Schools Searches For New Superintendent
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville City Schools is launching its search for a new superintendent. This after Superintendent Denise Patterson resigned citing medical reasons. Two assistants are currently filling the role. District officials hope to have the next superintendent in place by the start of 2020.
Woman Missing In Kings Mountain
(Kings Mountain, NC) -- McDowell County sheriff's officials are asking for the public's help locating a missing woman from Kings Mountain. Forty-five-year-old Belinda McCarthy was last seen in December of last year. She was reported missing earlier this week. McCarthy is described as white, about five-foot-seven and 140 pounds. She has brown hair and green eyes. Sheriff's officials say she could be in the Nebo or Old Fort area.
Asheville Housing Authority CEO Retiring
(Asheville, NC) -- The CEO of Asheville's Housing Authority is announcing his retirement. Gene Bell has been with the authority for 25 years. He was appointed CEO in 2005. It's not clear when his last day will be.
Man Arrested In Deadly Shooting At Neighborhood Pool In Charlotte
(Charlotte, NC) -- A man is under arrest in connection to a deadly shooting at a neighborhood pool in southeast Charlotte. Police say Tadaran McDonald shot Kenneth Armstrong Wednesday night at a pool in the Callaway Plantation community. McDonald was arrested during a traffic stop and charged with murder. An investigation is ongoing.
Chester Co. Daycare Worker Accused Of Assaulting Five-Year-Old Girl
(Chester Co., SC) -- A Chester County daycare worker is accused of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl. Samuel Kelly the Third was arrested yesterday morning. He worked at the Horizons Christian Academy in Chester where his daughter attended. The victim told her mother that Kelly touched her inappropriately during summer school last year, and the mother called police. It's not clear if Kelly is still employed at the daycare.
Bank Of America CEO: We Want Cashless Society
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CEO of Charlotte-based Bank of America says his bank has more to gain than anybody from increasing non-cash transactions. Brian Moynihan told the audience at Fortune's Brainstorm Finance this week that the bank wants a cashless society. Moynihan noted that half of all transactions are already electronic and he thinks it's just going to grow.
Two-Year-Old Upstate SC Boy Shot, Killed Himself
(Greenville, SC) -- A two-year-old boy is dead in upstate South Carolina after, police say, he shot and killed himself. Greenville County sheriff's officials say the boy found the gun and shot himself yesterday afternoon. He's identified as Kayden Stuber. It's not yet clear where the child got the gun or whether any charges will be filed. An investigation is ongoing.
Durham Man Busted For Child Pornography
(Durham, NC) -- A Durham man is being charged with over 50 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. Forty-year-old Philip Stallings was arrested on Wednesday and has been issued a 500-thousand-dollar bail. The Durham County Sheriff's office says the charges are based on pornographic media involving minors found on his computer. On his personal website, Stallings claims he started the Biblical Flat Earth Society and has over six-thousand followers on YouTube.
Storms Cause Damage in Triangle; Central NC
(Raleigh, NC) -- Strong storms yesterday have left a path of downed trees and power outages across the central part of the state. Most of the region was under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10 p.m., while Wake and Durham counties were under a Sporadic Severe Thunderstorm Warning. A spokesperson for Duke Energy said there were over one-thousand individual outages, with at least half being in the Triangle. Road obstructions also caused two lanes on I-94 northbound in Halifax County to close.
Raleigh Soccer Stadium May Be Denied Taxpayer Funds
(Raleigh, NC) -- A taxpayer-funded soccer stadium in southeast Raleigh may not happen after all. The stadium was not on the lists of projects issued by the Raleigh and Wake County managers on Wednesday, while PNC Arena, Raleigh Convention Center and a new indoor sports complex were. Now, NC Courage owner Steve Malik and Raleigh developer John Kane will have to compete with community organizations for tourism money. Malik and Kane initially asked the city and county for 330-million dollars earlier this year.
Compromise Reached Could Save Teachers' Jobs
(Raleigh, NC) -- Hundreds of North Carolina teachers whose licenses are about to expire this month may be able to keep their jobs. A committee comprised of both state House and Senate lawmakers reached a compromise yesterday that will now be voted on by the Senate on Monday. One of the licensing sticking points has revolved around the Pearson math exam, which the state required teachers to pass, regardless of the grade they were teaching. The test is currently being phased out.
MIA Soldier Returns Home After 69 Years
(Raleigh, NC) -- A soldier missing in action for almost 70 years has finally returned home. William "Hoover" Jones left his home in Nash County, North Carolina at age 18 to fight in the Korean War and had not been seen since 1950. His casket was met by surviving family members and salutes from fellow veterans at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport yesterday. Jones' body was identified using DNA testing after North Korea turned over 55 boxes of unidentified remains back in July of last year.
Thousands Lose Power During Severe Storms In Triad
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Duke Energy is working to fully restore power after severe thunderstorms left thousands of Triad customers in the dark. Close to 15-thousand outages were reported late yesterday afternoon in Guilford, Forsyth, Alamance, Rockingham and Stokes counties. The storms also brought heavy winds, downpours and knocked down trees. A tornado warning was issued for Caswell County but has since expired.

Person Shot, Killed At Murphy USA
(Greensboro, NC) -- A person is dead after a shooting at Murphy USA gas station in Greensboro. It's located near Walmart Supercenter on Cone Boulevard. Shots were fired just after 1 p.m. yesterday. Thirty-nine-year-old Korey Fitzgerald was killed. No arrests have been announced and an investigation is ongoing.
Part Of Cooks Flea Market To Reopen This Weekend
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A section of Cooks Flea Market is set to reopen after a fire tore through it earlier this month. The state's largest indoor flea market caught fire on June 5th. It was closed to shoppers at the time. The flea market has been shut down since then so crews can repair the smoke damage. It's supposed to reopen tomorrow.
Cyclist Hurt In Hit-And-Run In Greensboro
(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police are investigating a hit-and-run accident involving a bicyclist. The victim was struck by a vehicle around 4 p.m. yesterday at Apache and South English streets. They're expected to be okay. Police are looking for a white Honda van in connection with the crime. They say a woman was driving.
