Landslide Blocks Highway In Nantahala Gorge

(Swain County, NC) -- Crews are still cleaning up debris left behind by landslides in Swain County. U.S 19/74 in the Nantahala Gorge has been closed after heavy rain Saturday night caused four slides in the area. The North Carolina DOT says several people who were stuck that night have all been rescued. Traffic is being detoured around the gorge for the time being. It may take a few days to remove the debris.

(Washington, DC) -- President Trump is calling a recent veto by Governor Roy Cooper a terrible decision. Cooper vetoed House Bill 370 last week, which would require local law enforcement officials to comply with detention requests made by ICE. Trump tweeted on Saturday that the governor should reverse his decision and get back to the basics of fighting crime. Cooper previously said the bill weakens law enforcement in North Carolina by mandating sheriffs to do the job of federal agents.

Four Burke County Businesses Busted For Illegal Gaming

(Burke County, NC) -- State and local agents are investigating four businesses in Burke County for illegal gaming. The Morganton News Herald is reporting gaming machines were seized from the businesses on Friday. Burke County's sheriff says the locations were illegally paying out cash prizes to customers. Charges are pending as the investigation unfolds.

Woman Sentenced For Death Of Toddler

(Buncombe County, NC) -- A Buncombe County woman is going to jail for the death of a toddler. WLOS-TV says Jessica Metcalf was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter last week in connection to a mobile home fire in Leicester that killed a three-year-old in 2015. She was the girlfriend of the child's uncle and was alone with him before fire destroyed the home. The judge sentenced her to serve between 16 to 29 months.

Man Shot At Apartment Complex

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are investigating a shooting at an apartment complex. Investigators say a man was shot in the arm at Hillcrest Apartments on Atkinson Street Friday morning. He tried driving away and eventually pulled into the parking lot of Isaac Dickson Elementary School to call police. The school was placed on a brief lockdown as a result. There's been no word on the man's condition.

Small Business Health Care Act Now Law

(Raleigh, NC) -- The Small Business Health Care Act is now law in North Carolina. The plan allows insurers to offer small businesses, trade associations and other professional groups plans that could be cheaper than those in the Affordable Care Act. The News & Observer reports that some people with pre-existing conditions may end up with less coverage. Governor Cooper allowed the bill to become law over the weekend without his signature. He says he's still concerned about the potential negative effects on health care despite the bill's significant bipartisan support.

Suspect Arrested For Murder Near Uptown

(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect is facing charges in a murder near Uptown. Algisa Clark, Junior is accused of shooting a 20-year-old man to death on West Trade Street close to Johnson C. Smith University last Tuesday. He was arrested for murder and possession of a firearm by a felon on Saturday. It was the 73rd homicide of the year in Charlotte.

School Begins Today In CMS

(Charlotte, NC) -- Around 150-thousand CMS students are heading back to class today. Drivers are urged to use caution as the district rolls out close to 11-hundred buses this morning to take students to school. One Dead, One Injured In Fort Mill Shooting

(Fort Mill, SC) -- York County deputies are investigating a deadly shooting in Fort Mill. A domestic dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend allegedly led to the shooting at Caroland Drive and Pine Bluff Court on Saturday night. One victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. Investigators say the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Three In Injured In West Charlotte Shooting

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is looking into a triple shooting in west Charlotte. Officers found a man and woman injured in a parking lot on West Boulevard near Remount Road early Saturday morning. Another victim showed up at the hospital. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening. No arrests have been made.

Small Business Health Care Act Becomes Law Without Cooper's Signature

(Raleigh, NC) -- Small businesses across North Carolina now have another option on health care insurance. Governor Roy Cooper let the Small Business Health Care Act become law without his signature Sunday. The law allows health care plans for small businesses, trade associations, and others that are less expensive than plans under the Affordable Care Act. Cooper said in a statement he's concerned the plans might not cover pre-existing conditions but General Assembly leaders say the plans are required to cover pre-existing conditions, as well as maternity, newborn, and preventive care.

UNC Hospitals Accreditation At Risk After Problems Uncovered

(Chapel Hill, NC) -- UNC Hospitals are under what's called preliminary denial of accreditation status after a recent review uncovered several problems. The Times & Observer reports the problems include issues with suicide prevention and medication management. A UNC Health Care spokesman says there are no immediate threats to patients' health and safety. A UNC Hospitals statement says another review could come as soon as this week and officials expect to be removed from probation.

Vigil For 9-Year-Old Durham Shooting Victim

(Durham, NC) -- Family and friends gathered Sunday night in Durham to pray and remember a nine-year-old boy who was shot and killed last weekend. Z'yon Person was killed when someone fired shots into his aunt's car at the intersection of Duke and Leon streets. Along with prayers, people at last night's vigil pleaded that someone will come forward to tell police what happened. Z'yon's eight-year-old cousin was wounded but is expected to recover.

Fundraiser Planned For Seriously Injured Fuquay-Varina Teen

(Fuquay-Varina, NC) -- A Fuquay-Varina teenager who was seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver is getting some help from her co-workers. Isabella Allen was hit by an SUV as she rode her moped home from work the night of August 13th. The 16-year-old works at Zaxby's in Fuquay-Varina and the restaurant and other Zaxby's locations will donate a portion of Wednesday's sales to help with her medical bills. Two women are charged in the hit-and-run.

(Greensboro, NC) -- Democratic presidential hopeful Kamala Harris is rallying voters in the Triad. The U.S. Senator from California held a campaign event yesterday at Smith High School in Greensboro. Woman Charged With Impaired Driving

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A Winston-Salem woman is accused of driving impaired and causing a multi-vehicle wreck. Spring Williams was arrested Saturday evening. Officers say she rear-ended a stopped vehicle, causing a chain reaction. Five vehicles were damaged altogether, but no one was seriously hurt. Williams was arrested for DWI.

One Man Killed, Another Injured In Sanford Shooting

(Sanford, NC) -- One man is dead and another is hurt after a shooting in Sanford. It happened overnight Saturday at Westridge Apartments on Pathway Drive. Eric Thompson was killed and Jessie Ray was hurt. There's no word on who shot the men or what prompted the shooting. An investigation is ongoing.

Tiny Home Groundbreaking In High Point

(High Point, NC) -- Ten tiny homes are under construction in High Point. They're being built on Hay Street, near South University Parkway. The tiny homes are going up in an effort to help reduce homelessness in High Point. Two Greensboro-based non-profit companies teamed up to make the project possible: the Tiny House Community Development and The Sustainability Resource Center.
