(Asheville, NC) -- Cleaning crews are working to fix a mold problem at Asheville High School. A school system official told WLOS-TV that several classrooms in the Career and Technical Education Building have been closed. The air must still be purified and equipment cleaned before students and staff move back in. Humidistats are being installed at the CTE building to help prevent future mold from developing.

Human Remains Found In Buncombe County

(Buncombe County, NC) -- The medical examiner is working to identify human remains found in Buncombe County this week. The sheriff's office says deputies have been combing Wilson Cove Road in Swannanoa this summer in search of a missing person. The remains were discovered in the search area on Sunday. The sheriff's office will wait on identification before confirming it is the missing person.

Six Earthquakes Reported Outside Cherokee

(Cherokee, NC) -- Western North Carolina is a hot spot for earthquakes this week. The United States Geological Survey has confirmed six earthquakes rumbled southwest of Cherokee between Saturday and Wednesday nights. Their magnitudes ranged from one-point-four to two-point-five, which can still be difficult to feel. A geophysicist told the Citizen-Times the flurry of small quakes is a fairly common occurrence and shouldn't be a concern.

Closing Arguments In Swain County Murder Trial

(Swain County, NC) -- The jury is deliberating this morning in a Swain County murder trial. Closing arguments took most of Thursday in the case against Alex Crisp. He's accused of shooting the mother of his young child to death more than five years ago in Bryson City. Defense attorneys have argued that the woman died of suicide.

Some WNC Areas Reported To Be Abnormally Dry

(Asheville, NC) -- Some parts of western North Carolina are going through some drought conditions. The United States Drought Monitor issued a report yesterday which reveals abnormally dry conditions in an area of the foothills which includes Polk and Rutherford counties. The northeastern part of the state around Boone is also abnormally dry. The conditions are in stark contrast to the record-breaking rain that fell in the state last year.

Federal Funds To Help Road Repairs In WNC

(Asheville, NC) -- Western North Carolina is getting some federal help to repair roads damaged by flooding. WLOS-TV says the region will receive 11-million-dollars of the state's 53-million-dollar allotment announced this week. The state's DOT communications officer says the agency and state has been devastated by storms in the last few years.

Charlotte Leader Arrested For Sexual Assaults

(Charlotte, NC) -- The chairman of Charlotte's Citizens Review Board is facing over two dozen sex crime charges. The CMPD says two victims have accused Henry Black, Junior of continually assaulting them over a 22-year span up until 2018. They were children when the alleged assaults began. Deputy Chief Gerald Smith says they reported the assaults to several adults over the years, but nothing was ever done. Black was arrested in North Myrtle Beach and is awaiting extradition to Charlotte.

One Seriously Injured In North Charlotte Fire

(Charlotte, NC) -- Fire officials are investigating a blaze that tore through a home in north Charlotte last night. It took around 20 minutes for firefighters to put out the flames on White Aspen Place. WSOC-TV is reporting that bystanders went in and pulled out one person, who was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. The CFD said it was a devastating fire.

Teen Arrested For School Threats

(Charlotte, NC) -- A 13-year-old student is accused of posting a school shooting threat on Instagram. The CMPD says the teen admitted it was just a joke, but he was arrested yesterday and will face charges. The threat was made against Coulwood Middle School. The Union County Sheriff's office also says a 16-year-old was arrested on felony charges for allegedly making threats against Marvin Ridge High School in Waxhaw on Thursday.

Mother Charged After Baby Left In Hot Car

(Kannapolis, NC) -- A baby who was left in a hot car yesterday in Kannapolis is expected to be okay. A witness heard the 12-month-old crying in a car parked at the Cabarrus County Human Services Center around 11 a.m. The mother showed up just before a responding deputy planned to break open the back window. She was charged with misdemeanor child abuse. The young girl was treated for heat exhaustion at Atrium Health Cabarrus and should be okay.

Teenager Stabbed While Jogging In Union County

(Union County, NC) -- Union County deputies are investigating the stabbing of a teen jogger. Investigators say the boy was attacked on a trail in the Weddington Chase subdivisions last night. He was last reported to be in stable condition with injuries to his upper back. Deputies are looking for the suspect.

Panthers Lose After Goal Line Stand By Bucs

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Panthers are winless through two games for the first time since 2013. Tampa Bay stopped Carolina at the goal line with just over a minute left to play to secure a 20-14 win at Bank of America Stadium last night. Cam Newton completed just under 50-percent of his passes for 333 yards. The running game was ineffective against the Bucs. The Panthers will look for their first win of the season a week from Sunday at Arizona.

Fayetteville Homeowner Shoots, Kills Home Invasion Suspect

(Fayetteville, NC) -- A man suspected of breaking into a home in Fayetteville is dead after a shootout with the homeowner. Fayetteville police say it happened a little before 7 p.m. Thursday on the 400-block of Lands End Road. Two men forced open the front door and one traded gunfire with the homeowner. A woman who lives there was shot and taken to the hospital with what police say are non-life-threatening injuries. Police are looking for the second suspect.

PIttsboro Credit Union Manager Held Hostage In Standoff

(PIttsboro, NC) -- A credit union manager who was held hostage is OK and a suspect is in custody after a tense hour in Pittsboro. An armed man walked into the State Employees Credit Union around noon and fired two shots, beginning a standoff that lasted about an hour. The suspect came out of the credit union around 1 p.m. and surrendered to Chatham County Sheriff's deputies, Pittsboro police, and FBI agents who had surrounded the building. No one was injured.

(Raleigh, NC) -- Downtown Raleigh is enjoying a multi-billion dollar growth spree. The Downtown Raleigh Alliance shared the numbers Thursday during its State of Downtown Raleigh address. More than three-billion dollars has fueled development since 2005 and that continues with another two-point-three earmarked for further development. Downtown's residential population has grown by nearly 40-percent over the past four years and tourism has increased by nearly 50-percent since 2007 as new hotels attract visitors.

Greensboro Deputy Police Chief Announces Retirement

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro's deputy police chief is announcing his retirement. Deputy Police Chief James Hinson says today will be his last day on the job. The news comes just one week after an employee at a group home co-owned by Hinson was charged with sexually assaulting a minor. Hinson had been with the department for nearly three-decades.

Calvary Day School Placed On Lockdown Thursday

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- An investigation is underway after a strange substance was mailed to Cavalry Day School in Winston-Salem. A staff member yesterday said they experienced a "tingling" sensation after opening a letter that contained an unknown substance. The city's hazmat crew was not able to identify the contents but said they were not hazardous. The school was placed on lockdown for about an hour while crews investigated.

Married Couple Killed In Guilford Co. House Fire ID'd

(Guilford Co., NC) -- Officials are identifying the married couple who died in a house fire earlier this week. Sixty-six-year-old Margaret Dughie and 78-year-old Donald Buysse were killed Tuesday morning when their home in the Lynwood Lakes Subdivision caught fire. Officials say the man was on oxygen and in the care of hospice. There's no word yet on what caused the fire.

Students Left Alone At High Point Central High

(High Point, NC) -- Some parents whose children attend a Guilford County high school are up in arms after finding out they were left alone for an entire period. It happened Monday morning at High Point Central High. Parents who didn't want to be identified told "FOX 8" there have been a handful of violent crimes at the school and they feared for their children's safety. A district spokesperson said the class was left unstaffed due to miscommunication.
