Fraternity Suspended Until At Least 2023
(Boone, NC) -- A fraternity at Appalachian State University is suspended until at least 2023. Tau Kappa Epsilon was already in trouble for alleged problematic social media posts, misconduct and multiple police calls to chapter members' addresses in Boone. University officials say the fraternity has continued to carry on with activities, despite being required to stop during its initial suspension. TKE's university recognition has been stripped and isn't eligible to return until at least 2023.
Corn Maze Honors UNCC Shooting Victim
(Canton, NC) -- The owners of a western North Carolina corn maze are paying tribute to a student killed in the UNC Charlotte shooting earlier this year. Skipper Russell of Cold Mountain Corn Maize in Canton told WLOS-TV that a design has been cut-out in the image of Riley Howell, accompanied by the word hero. Howell was credited with saving the lives of others when he jumped on the gunman in April. Howell and another student died, while four were injured. Russell calls Howell a local hometown hero.
More Tires Slashed In Asheville Neighborhood
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are looking to see whether two recent tire slashing sprees are connected. Residents in the Montford district woke up yesterday morning to find that someone had targeted about 30 cars. Investigators believe it's someone who doesn't live in the neighborhood. The tires of close to 30 cars were found slashed last Thursday morning on Maxwell Street.
Service For Volunteer Firefighter Today
(Haywood County, NC) -- A Haywood County community is mourning the death of one of its firefighters. Seventy-four-year-old Claud Messer died while responding to a call for the Jonathan Creek volunteer fire department on Friday morning. His service truck hit the back of a logging truck on Highway 276. A celebration of life will be held at Lake Junaluska's Stuart Auditorium beginning at noon today.
Fundraiser Walk Brings In Money For Alzheimer's Fight
(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville fundraiser to find a cure for Alzheimer's is a success. WLOS-TV is reporting around 500 people came out to take part in the Two-mile Walk to End Alzheimer's in downtown on Saturday. Participants raised over 143-thousand-dollars. The CEO of the local Alzheimer's Association chapter says she doesn't meet people anymore that don't have a connection to this disease.
App State Downs UNC In Chapel Hill
(Chapel Hill, NC) -- Appalachian State is proving it might be the best college football team in the state. The Mountaineers blocked a last-second field goal attempt to defeat UNC 34-to-31 in Chapel Hill on Saturday. It was App State's first win over a team from a power conference since taking down Michigan in 2007. They're now four-and-oh on the season.
Two Killed, Nine Injured During Bar Shooting
(Lancaster, SC) -- Police are investigating a deadly nightclub shooting in Lancaster. Investigators say two people were killed and nine others were injured when gunfire erupted during an argument at Skool Sports Bar and Grill early Saturday morning. Four of those shot were flown for treatment at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte. No arrests have been made, although investigators have identified a person of interest.
Teen Dies After Struck By Car Near School
(Charlotte, NC) -- A teenager who was struck by a car last week near Garinger High School in Charlotte is dead. The CMPD says 16-year-old Israel Plyler was hit in a crosswalk of Eastway Drive and East Sugar Creek Road. The driver had a green light and wasn't charged. Plyler never regained consciousness and died on Saturday afternoon.
Game Canceled Amid Cheerleading Team Probation
(Stanly County, NC) -- A political controversy involving a Stanly County cheerleading team is continuing to have reverberations. The state's high school athletic association recently placed North Stanly High's cheerleaders on probation after a photo circulated on social media showing the team with a Trump 2020 banner. The school district canceled last Friday night's football game against Jesse Carson High School out of Rowan County for safety reasons. Hundreds of people said on social media they had planned to show up waving mini American flags.
One Injured In Shooting Near Music Factory
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a shooting that injured one near The Music Factory early Sunday morning. The victim was found injured at a parking deck on Hamilton Street across from the establishment. He was last listed in critical condition. Some neighborhood regulars told WBTV they were surprised to hear about violence in that area.
Vandal Strikes Cars In Charlotte Neighborhood
(Charlotte, NC) -- Residents of one Charlotte neighborhood are repairing damage left behind by a vandal overnight Saturday. NBC Charlotte is reporting someone shot out windows in at least a dozen cars in Dilworth. No arrests have been made, although a possible suspect was caught on surveillance camera driving through the neighborhood. The area has been targeted before.
Panthers Win First Game Of Season
(Phoenix, AZ) -- The Panthers are in the win column for 2019. Carolina took down Arizona 38-to-20 on the road yesterday. Quarterback Kyle Allen threw for over 260 yards and four touchdowns while filling in for the injured Cam Newton. The Panthers will stay on the road to play Houston next weekend. Newton's return remains unclear.
Broken Water Main Work Continues, Lanes Blocked North Of RDU
(Raleigh, NC) -- Work to fix a broken water main in northwest Raleigh will go on all day today, blocking a stretch of Brier Creek Parkway. The northbound lanes of Brier Creek Parkway have been choked off since a water main broke Thursday night. A city news release Sunday night said excavation has created unexpected delays in getting the main fixed and reopening Brier Creek Parkway between Glenwood Avenue and Skyland Ridge Parkway. The city now estimates the work will be finished by 9 p.m.
Weekend Crashes Tie Up, Close I-95
(Undated) -- People driving on I-95 can be excused if they're holding the wheel with crossed fingers this morning. Two weekend crashes tied up and closed the Interstate over the weekend. A crash involving two cars and a horse trailer had I-95 backed up for eight miles Sunday afternoon northeast of Fayetteville. A crash that snared 20 vehicles had the northbound lanes of I-95 closed for hours Saturday morning.
Health Alert For Possible Bacterial Meningitis Case At Methodist University
(Fayetteville, NC) -- A health alert is out in Fayetteville after a possible case of bacterial meningitis was reported at Methodist University. Cumberland County health officials say a person associated with the university was hospitalized over the weekend with a possible bacterial meningitis infection. Health officials say preventive antibiotics will be provided to anyone who's had direct close contact with the person. Cumberland County and Methodist University are working to identify people who should get the antibiotics.
First Downtown Raleigh Grocery Store Opens
(Raleigh, NC) -- Downtown Raleigh now has something it hasn't had for years. Weaver Street Market is the first full-service grocery store to open downtown in years and the city, the store, and people who live downtown will be celebrating today. The store opened over the weekend and a sort-of ribbon-cutting is scheduled today. CBS17 reports Weaver Street Market is run as a co-op, owned by staff and customers, and focuses on locally-grown farm products.
Elkin Police Sergeant Arrested
(Elkin, NC) -- An Elkin police sergeant is accused of assaulting a woman. Thomas Rose was arrested Friday night at his home. He's charged with assault by strangulation, commencing threats, simple assault and assault on a female. The State Bureau of Investigation started looking into the September 14th incident after the victim went to the hospital to be treated for her injuries.
Tractor-Trailers Collide In Surry Co.
(Surry Co., NC) -- No one is hurt after an accident involving two tractor-trailers in Surry County. It happened yesterday on I-77 near Elkin. Authorities say one of the tractor-trailers side-swiped the other one, and they both caught fire. Both vehicles were destroyed.

(New London, NC) -- North Carolina officials say the potential threat that forced them to cancel a high school football game Friday is unsubstantiated. A protest was planned for the North Stanley High game because the school placed its cheerleaders on probation for posing with a "Trump 2020 Make America Great Again" poster. Stanly County Sheriff Jeff Crisco told the Washington Post that a man with ties to the right-wing Proud Boys group was organizing the protest. That group has been involved in some violent protests in the past.
Memorial Held For High Point Man Killed
(High Point, NC) -- Friends and family are coming together to remember the life of a High Point man who was shot and killed this past weekend. Twenty-two-year-old Khalil Jones was gunned down Friday night. Police say someone shot him in the back. Folks gathered Saturday night to light candles and release balloons in memory of Jones. Police have not identified a possible suspect.
Thomasville Man Hospitalized After Motorcycle Wreck
(Thomasville, NC) -- A Thomasville man is recovering from injuries after a bad motorcycle wreck. It happened Saturday night near U.S. 29/70 at Old Highway 29. Police say a motorcycle and an SUV were involved. The biker suffered severe injuries. Police say he was wearing a helmet. The crash is under investigation.
