Several Dozen Rabbits Left At Asheville Animal Rescue
(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville animal rescue is looking for some help in caring for several dozen rabbits mysteriously left behind at its center. A spokeswoman for Brother Wolf told the Citizen-Times that staff arrived Tuesday morning to find 45 bunnies left outside in boxes. Brother Wolf is now in need of rabbit cages, supplies and potential foster families. They've all been reported to be in good health.
State Lawmakers Approve Bill To Add Early Voting Day
(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina lawmakers are trying to bring back an extra day of early voting. The state House and Senate both passed a bill yesterday that will restore the last Saturday before an election as an early voting day. The legislation also sets hours for that day between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Another key issue in the bill outlines specific criminal charges for absentee ballot fraud.
Suspect Wanted In Police Officer Assault
(Fletcher, NC) -- Investigators are looking for a suspect who allegedly tried running over a police officer in Fletcher yesterday. It happened while the officer was investigating a suspicious car in the parking lot of the Ingles on U.S. 25. Ryan Vought of Arden is accused of trying to strike the officer before driving off onto Hendersonville Road. Autumn James is wanted for being an accomplice. The officer was treated for minor injuries at the hospital.
Company Recalls Apples Distributed To NC
(Aurora, IL) -- Some apples distributed in North Carolina are being recalled because they could be contaminated with listeria. A Michigan-based produce company is recalling almost 23-hundred cases of apples that were recently shipped to eight states, including North Carolina. The apples were sold under the brands Great Lakes and North Bay Produce. The types of apples include Fuji, Red Delicious, Honeycrisp and Jonathan.
Paving Company Takes Fight For New Plant To Court
(Madison County, NC) -- A paving company is taking its fight for a new asphalt plant in Madison County to Superior Court. The Citizen-Times is reporting Madison Asphalt filed paperwork in court on Friday to ask the high court to review a decision of the county's board of adjustment. The paperwork argues the board denied the permit for the business over air quality standards that surpassed those required by the state's Department of Environmental Quality.
Asheville Firefighters Benefit From October Concert
(Asheville, NC) -- The Asheville Fire Fighters Association is getting big help from some country musicians. WLOS-TV is reporting this month's Guitar Jam at the Salvage Station pulled in over 25-thousand-dollars to benefit local firefighters. Rodney Atkins, Scotty McCreary and Dillon Carmichael were among those musicians who performed at the sold-out show. An association representative says some of the money will be used to help firefighters battling cancer.
Toll Project Extending Past Deadline
(Charlotte, NC) -- The construction company in charge of the I-77 toll-lane project is in danger of facing fines. The North Carolina DOT says construction won't be done by the October 31st deadline. That's already been pushed back from the original expected completion date early this year. NBC Charlotte reports the delay could mean a fine of ten-thousand-dollars-a day past the deadline, but the DOT hasn't made a decision yet.
Meck Sheriff Warns Sex Offenders To Stay Inside On Halloween
(Charlotte, NC) -- The Mecklenburg Sheriff's Office is warning sex offenders to stay at home on Halloween. Deputies are trying to reach out to over one-thousand registered offenders in the county in an annual initiative called Operation Watchful Eye. Sex offenders are required to turn off their porch lights and stay at home tomorrow night. One deputy told NBC Charlotte they don't want to put children in a bad spot.
Suspect Arrested For Charlotte Murder, Hit-And-Run
(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect is facing murder charges for allegedly dragging a man with his car onto I-85 earlier this month. The CMPD says Jeremy Davis drove from a Seven-Eleven on West Sugar Creek Road to the interstate with Willie Corry clinging to the side. Corry was found near the connector, while the car was discovered abandoned down an embankment. Davis was charged with murder and felony hit-and-run yesterday.
Two Injured In West Charlotte Shooting
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a double shooting in west Charlotte. One victim was found injured in front of a shopping center along Beatties Ford Road near Lasalle Street Tuesday afternoon. A second victim was discovered not far away on Maribel Avenue. It's unclear exactly where the shooting took place. Both victims were taken to the hospital with injuries not thought to be life-threatening.
Construction Worker Rescued In Uptown
(Charlotte, NC) -- A construction worker is safe thanks to a high-rise rescue in uptown. The man reportedly injured his leg while on site at a new apartment building construction site on North College Street Tuesday afternoon. Emergency crews were able to reach the worker using a crane and brought him to safety. It's unclear how serious the injuries were.

Durham Shootings Wound 6, Kill 2 In Less Than 24 Hours
(Durham, NC) -- Durham police are investigating four drive-by shootings that killed two people and injured six others in less than 24 hours. The shootings began Monday night when two men were shot as they were walking on Wabash Street a little before 10:30 p.m. A few minutes later, two people were wounded and a man was fatally injured at a bus stop. A man was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon on North Driver Street and three people were wounded in a shooting near Northgate Mall around 5:30 p.m.
2 Students Injured As Cumberland County School Bus Runs Over Downed Powerlines
(Fayetteville, NC) -- Two Fayetteville students are being treated after their school bus ran over downed power lines. Police say the wires fell to the ground when a car collided with a power pole. The bus from Ramsey Street High School stopped after running over the wires at the intersection of Mountain Drive and Camden Road. All the students were safely off the bus by 4:45 p.m.
North Carolina Reading Scores Fall Despite State Literacy Effort
(Undated) -- North Carolina students' reading scores are falling in spite of a major statewide effort to improve literacy. Lawmakers created the Read To Achieve program in 2012 to get more children reading at grade level by the end of third grade. But the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress shows North Carolina students' reading scores and the percentage of students with at least basic reading skills are lower than in 2011. The assessment is known as the nation's report card.

Former Forsyth Co. Sheriff Ron Barker Dies
(Forsyth Co., NC) -- Former Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Barker is dead at the age of 86. His family says he passed away yesterday. Barker launched his career with the sheriff's department as a deputy back in 1969. He served as sheriff from 1990 until 2002. Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Junior released a statement saying Barker is a big reason the agency is "what it is today."
Teen Shot, Killed In Winston-Salem ID'd
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Police are identifying the teenager shot and killed in Winston-Salem. Sixteen-year-old Jayden Jamison was found dead behind the wheel of his car near Pittsburgh Avenue and Burton Street yesterday afternoon. Police believe there was also a passenger in the vehicle who fled the scene. An investigation is ongoing.
Burlington Teenager Wanted On Child Sexual Assault Charges
(Mebane, NC) -- Alamance County sheriff's officials are looking for a Burlington teenager who's accused of sexually assaulting a child. The victim's family says 17-year-old Jarrett Somers assaulted the child Monday afternoon on Farrell Road in Mebane. Deputies say the victim was under the age of 13. Somers is wanted on a felony charge of indecent liberties. Anyone with information is urged to call ACSO.
Community Enrichment Center Opens In Greensboro
(Greensboro, NC) -- A new center focused on connecting immigrants and refugees with community resources is open in Greensboro. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held yesterday at the Community Enrichment Center on North Westgate Drive. It will provide immigrants with access to mental health services, educational resources and a nursing clinic. The center is in partnership with Cone Health, UNCG's Center for new North Carolinians and Phillips Management.
