Elections Board Approves Voting Machine
(Raleigh, NC) -- Some North Carolina counties will be using a newly-approved touchscreen voting machine in 2020. The elections board voted three-to-two on Friday to approve a new machine provided by the company ES&S. The two members who voted against the machines say they haven't been tested enough. Some counties will conduct 2020 elections with hand-marked ballots, while others will use the new machines.
Former Chief Asst DA Died Of Accidental Overdose
(Buncombe County, NC) -- Accidental overdose is the cause of death for a former Buncombe County chief assistant district attorney. Fifty-year-old Rodney Hasty was found dead in his home two months ago. The medical examiner's office determined that Hasty died from fentanyl and ethanol toxicity. District Attorney Todd Williams said it's a reminder that addiction doesn't have boundaries.
Former Captain Jailed For Sexual Battery
(Buncombe County, NC) -- A former Buncombe County sheriff's captain is in jail for sexual battery. The Citizen-Times is reporting Josh Wilhelm is in the middle of a 30-day term in Madison County. He was found guilty of misdemeanor battery against three inmates at the Buncombe detention center dating back to the summer of 2017. Wilhelm worked nearly 14 years with the Buncombe County Sheriff's office.
Wilkes County Woman Arrested For Embezzling 400-Thousand-Dollars
(Ashe County, NC) -- A Wilkes County woman is accused of embezzling more than 400-thousand-dollars from her employer. The Watauga Democrat says 27-year-old Ashely Church was arrested last week for allegedly stealing from Carolina West Wireless in Ashe County between 2016 and this year. Charges include 43 counts of larceny.
Bus Driver Arrested For Indecent Liberties
(Haywood County, NC) -- A 70-year-old school bus driver is facing sex crime charges in Haywood County. WLOS-TV says Larry Dean is accused of taking improper liberties with a 17-year-old high school student in October. He was fired from Haywood County Schools at the beginning of November. Official charges are two felony counts of indecent liberties.
App State Hires Football Coach
(Boone, NC) -- The next head coach for the Appalachian State football team is coming from within. Shawn Clark was named to the position on Friday. He played for the Mountaineers in the 90s and was most recently an assistant coach for the team this year. App State plays in the New Orleans Bowl on Saturday.
Car Leaves Scene After Slamming Into Convenience Store
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is looking for a car that slammed into a north Charlotte Seven-Eleven last night. Officers say the teen suspects crashed into the front of the store at Old Statesville Road and W.T. Harris Boulevard before backing off and driving away. No one was injured at the scene. The suspected vehicle was only described as a purple or burgundy sedan.
Bloomberg Opens Campaign Office In Uptown
(Charlotte, NC) -- A field office for Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg is open in uptown. The former New York mayor was in Charlotte yesterday for the opening and told the crowd about his priorities of quality education and a minimum wage raise. Bloomberg also referenced the high number of homicides in Charlotte this year, saying he'll do something about guns. NBC Charlotte says he's sitting fifth among Democrats in recent polls.
Teen Injured In North Charlotte Shooting
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a shooting that injured a teen girl yesterday in north Charlotte. Officers say the 17-year-old was shot in the leg on Beatties Ford Road. A 16-year-old was shot at, but not hit. There have been no arrests made.
Shared Bike-Bus Lane Opens
(Charlotte, NC) -- A shared bike and bus lane opens today in uptown. The pilot program features a lane on East 4th Street between the Charlotte Transportation Center and South McDowell Street. Only school buses, the Charlotte Area Transportation System, bikes, and scooters can use the lane. It's the first of its kind in Charlotte.
Wig-Wearing Man Robs Huntersville Bank
(Huntersville, NC) -- Huntersville police are on the lookout for a wig-wearing man who robbed a bank. Officers say he was wearing a blonde wig and high heels inside the BB&T on Northcross Drive late Friday afternoon. The suspect got away with cash, although investigators say no weapon was used.
Panthers Lose Sixth In Row
(Charlotte, NC) -- The downward spiral is continuing for the Panthers. Carolina lost its sixth game in a row on Sunday, this time at the hands of Seattle at Bank of America Stadium. The Seahawks held on to win 30-to-24 after building a 20 point lead in the fourth quarter. Christian McCaffrey gained 165 total yards, making him the first player in Panthers' history to go over two-thousand yards from scrimmage in a single season.

(Greensboro, NC) -- A powerful storm system is threatening the East Coast. CNN reports a bomb cyclone is dropping heavy rain from the Carolinas up to New England. The National Weather Service says the Triad-area should see around three-quarters-of-an-inch of rainfall today and tomorrow. Wind gusts could reach 26 miles-per-hour. The heavy rain and ice might impact travel and could cause damage to trees and power lines.
Homicide Investigation Underway In Greensboro
(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police are investigating a weekend homicide. A man was shot and killed yesterday morning in the parking lot of Petra Hookah Lounge, near Spring Garden and Granite streets. He's identified as 21-year-old Chaunci Rutledge. Police have not named a possible suspect or motive in the shooting.
Man Seriously Hurt After Dirt Bike Wreck
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A man is badly hurt after crashing his dirt bike in Winston-Salem. Police say Jarrell Cohen flew over the handlebars and suffered serious injuries. The accident happened yesterday afternoon at North Cleveland Avenue and 11th Street. Cohen's current condition is unknown.
