One Shot To Death Outside Asheville Apartments
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are investigating a homicide at an apartment complex. Officers found a man injured from a shooting outside Hillcrest Apartments last night. He died at the hospital. No one was been arrested.
More Rain For WNC
(Asheville, NC) -- More rain is on the way to western North Carolina. Another storm system is expected to move through the region beginning later today, which could bring two to three inches of rain for most areas. Counties in the far western corner of the state are in a flood watch from one this afternoon through tomorrow night. Some areas have yet to recover from flooding last week.
Employees File Lawsuit Against Earth Fare
(Fletcher, NC) -- Fletcher-based Earth Fare is facing a lawsuit from its employees. The natural foods grocery chain announced last week it was closing all its stores before filing for Chapter Eleven bankruptcy. The Citizen Times is reporting two women filed a lawsuit on behalf of around 34-hundred fellow employees seeking 60 days of pay and benefits. Earth Fare claims it notified its workers properly under guidelines set forth under labor laws.
Hospitals Add Visitor Restrictions As Flu Cases Rise
(Boone, NC) -- More hospitals in the region are restricting visitors as the flu continues to spread. North Carolina health officials last reported that 63 people have died from flu-related illnesses this season. Appalachian Regional Healthcare System is now only allowing visitors 18 years or older at Watauga Medical Center in Boone and Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville. Visitors must also be healthy and cannot live with anyone who has been diagnosed with the flu.
Driver Faces Second-Degree Murder In Deadly Wreck
(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville man is facing an upgraded charge of second-degree murder in a deadly wreck. Investigators say 32-year-old Seth Coe was impaired when his car crossed the center line of US 70 and slammed head on into another vehicle in late January. The impact killed a woman and injured four children. WLOS-TV says the second-degree murder charged was added on last week, in addition to original charges of felony death by vehicle.
Lane Opens On Nantahala Gorge Highway After Rockslide
(Swain County, NC) -- Crews are continuing a rockslide clean-up in the Nantahala Gorge. Debris covered U.S. 19-74 last week during a rain storm. The same area was affected by several mudslides last summer. DOT crews were able to re-open one lane of traffic yesterday.
Three Suspects In Convenience Store Attack Still At-Large
(Gastonia, NC) -- Gastonia Police are still looking for three suspects in a convenience store mob attack. It's been more than a week since a group of people ransacked the QuikTrip on West Franklin Boulevard. A clerk suffered injuries in the attack. Three suspects were arrested over the weekend for charges ranging from felony inciting to riot and larceny to assault. Three suspects remain at-large.
Suspect Arrested In Restaurant Murder
(Charlotte, NC) -- A man accused of killing a man inside a southwest Charlotte restaurant is in jail. A maintenance worker was shot to death inside La Poblanita Bar and Grill on Westinghouse Boulevard Wednesday night. NBC Charlotte says CMPD officers arrested the suspect for murder on Saturday.
One Dead In Car Fire
(Charlotte, NC) -- A deadly car fire is being investigated by the Charlotte Fire Department. Firefighters found a car ablaze early Sunday morning on Bramwyck Drive in south Charlotte. They pulled one person from the car, who died at the scene. There's no word yet on what caused the fire, but investigators told WSOC-TV it was an accident.
Two Injured In Apartment Shooting
(Charlotte, NC) -- Two people are recovering from injuries in a northeast Charlotte shooting. The CMPD says gunfire erupted during a fight at the Barrington Place Apartments off of East W.T. Harris Boulevard yesterday around noon. Injuries weren't considered to be life-threatening. There have been no arrests at this time.
Suspect In Hotel Robberies Caught After Standoff
(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect is accused of robbing two hotels in the Queen City over the weekend. The man allegedly held up a Comfort Inn and a Super Eight on Saturday. Officers caught up with him at a Knights Inn on Nations Ford Road yesterday, where he refused to come out of a room. A two-hour SWAT standoff ended peacefully.
City Leaders Pushing For More Esports
(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte could be on the way to becoming a major Esports destination. Former Hornets' star Mugsy Bogues and city leaders were some of those in attendance at an Esports tournament in South End on Saturday. City councilman Tariq Bokhari says its almost a no-brainer to make Charlotte a real player in the Esports industry. He cited cities like Orlando and Las Vegas who have built Esports-dedicated arenas.
Cary Standoff Ends Peacefully
(Cary, NC) -- An armed standoff in Cary dragged on for more than two hours before ending peacefully Sunday evening. Police were called to a Chick-fil-A on North Harrison around 4:45 p.m. on reports a man with a gun was in the parking lot. Officers surrounded place until about 7 p.m. when police arrested the man without incident and determined there was no threat to the public. No customers or employees were involved because all Chick-fil-A restaurants are closed on Sundays.
Fayetteville Hiring Engineer To Inspect Cracks At New Woodpeckers Stadium
(Fayetteville, NC) -- Fayetteville is hiring an engineer to inspect cracks in concrete at the city's new baseball stadium. The Carolina League Woodpeckers moved into 40-million dollar Segra Stadium last April. The contractor says the cracks are "purely cosmetic" and don't pose a threat to the public. Fayetteville City Manager Doug Hewett says some cracks in concrete are to be expected, but the city wants the engineer to evaluate the condition of the concreted are come up with options, "if a repair is warranted."
Seventh-Ranked Duke Rallies To Shock UNC, 98-96 In Overtime
(Chapel Hill, NC) -- Seventh-ranked Duke rallied to shock UNC, 98-96 in overtime Saturday in Chapel Hill. Tre Jones drained a jumper as regulation ended to force overtime and Wendell Moore Jr. put back a Jones miss as OT expired to win it for the Blue Devils. Jones had a game-high 28 and Cole Anthony's 24 led the Tar Heels. Duke improves to 10-2 in the ACC and 20-and-3 while UNC drops to 3-9 in the conference and 10-and-13 overall.
Duke Women Down Miami, UNC Falls To Virginia Tech
(Undated) -- Duke's women had no trouble with Miami, putting down the Hurricanes, 74-55 Sunday in Coral Gables. Jade Williams' 16 led five Blue Devils in double figures, including Haley Gorecki, who pulled down ten rebounds to go with 13 points. UNC's women faded late, falling to Virginia Tech, 72-63 at Carmichael Arena on Sunday. Taylor Koenen led the Tar Heels with 19 points and ten rebounds.
Man Injured By Falling Tree In Randleman
(Randleman, NC) -- A man is badly hurt after he was hit by a falling tree in Randleman. It happened early Friday morning on Edith Russell Road. The victim was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. His family calls the incident a freak accident.
Greensboro Man Accused Of Soliciting Sex From Child
(Burlington, NC) -- A Greensboro man is under arrest, accused of soliciting sex from a child. Police say 40-year-old Richard Thompson tried to meet a juvenile for sex in Burlington. He was arrested Friday following an investigation by the police department's Internet Crimes Against Children's unit. Thompson was booked into the Alamance County Jail under a 150-thousand-dollar bond.
Leslie's House Opens In High Point
(Hight Point, NC) -- A new women's shelter is open in High Point. Leslie's House Winter Women's Emergency Shelter on English Road opened its doors Friday night. It offers women without dependents a place to sleep, toiletries, hot meals and life skills classes. The shelter is open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily.
