(Asheville, NC) -- Super Tuesday is less than a day away in North Carolina and 13 other states. Voters head to the polls tomorrow to cast a ballot in the presidential primary. Polls are open statewide from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. You can head to the state's Board of Elections website to find out where you can cast a ballot. Close to 800-thousand people voted early in North Carolina.
Two Found Dead In WNC Town
(Woodfin, NC) -- The deaths of two people are being investigated in the Buncombe County town of Woodfin. Officers found a man and woman in the living room of a home on Friday night, around six hours after the woman was reported missing. Both had been shot. Woodfin police say there's no danger to the public, but didn't comment on what may have happened.
Frost's Attorney Says She Didn't Benefit From Contracts
(Asheville, NC) -- The attorney for former Buncombe County commissioner Ellen Frost says she didn't personally benefit from contracts with the Tryon Equestrian Center. Frost is accused of illegally using county funds to sponsor events at the Polk County site. WLOS-TV reports Frost's attorney requested on Friday to be able to use other government contracts to prove she had good reason to enter into a deal with the center. Prosecutors have requested that the separate contracts be withdrawn from the trial. Her case goes to court at the end of this month.
Asheville Cyclist Wins Gold In World Championship
(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville cyclist is now a world champion. Lily Williams and her three teammates won the gold medal in track cycling's world championships last week in Berlin. She told the Citizen-Times that her teammates and coaches put a lot of work in helping her get ready for her first championship. The 25-year-old just started track cycling last year, and helped run the fastest time an American team pursuit squad has ever had.
Buncombe School Calendar Changes After Winter Weather Cancellations
(Buncombe County, NC) -- A change in the calendar is coming for Buncombe County Schools. District officials say March 16th is changing from an optional teacher work day to a regular day of class, after three recent missed days due to winter weather. The last day of school has also been moved from May 29th to June 3rd.
Basketball Tournament Begins Thursday In Asheville
(Asheville, NC) -- Postseason basketball is coming to Asheville. The Southern Conference women's tournament gets underway at Harrah's Cherokee Center on Thursday, with the men taking the court beginning Friday. The winners of both tournaments automatically gain spots in the NCAA Tournament. A Downtown Dribble and KidsFest will be held in conjunction with the tournament in downtown's Pack Square Saturday.
Trump Holding Rally Ahead Of Super Tuesday
(Charlotte, NC) -- President Trump is coming to the Queen City ahead of Super Tuesday. Doors open at three this afternoon for tonight's Keep America Great rally at Bojangles Coliseum. The event comes as North Carolinians prepare to head to the polls tomorrow for the presidential primary. Nearly 800-thousand people cast their ballots in early voting.
One Dead In Double-Shooting
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a deadly double-shooting in east Charlotte. Officers say one man died and another was injured after gunfire broke out at the East Park Apartments on Burner Drive yesterday. Another man died one day after a separate shooting in northwest Charlotte. Two men were found injured early Saturday morning near the intersection of North Crigler Street and Rozzelles Ferry Road.
Girl Dies After Being Hit At Bus Stop
(Lancaster County, SC) -- A Lancaster County family is mourning the death of a six-year-old girl. Jerrnia Horne died Friday afternoon, less than ten hours after she was hit by a truck while waiting for the school bus near the Pleasant Hill community. Troopers say she was hit as she stepped into the road. Her grandmother was at the scene waiting with her. The driver hasn't been charged.
Fire Damages SE Charlotte Apartment
(Charlotte, NC) -- Everyone is safe in a southeast Charlotte apartment fire. Crews were able to contain the flames to a single unit at McAlpine Terrace on Pineburr Road last night. Investigators are still searching for the cause, but called it accidental. One witness told WSOC-TV they were lucky not to be calling Red Cross with everyone looking for a room. The fire caused around ten-thousand-dollars in damage.
Mecklenburg County Man Dies In Prison Fight
(Greene County, NC) -- The death of an inmate from Mecklenburg County is being investigated in eastern North Carolina. Kevin Taylor was allegedly attacked by another inmate using a homemade weapon at the Eastern Correctional Institution on Saturday. Taylor died at the scene, while the second inmate suffered minor injuries. He was in the middle of a five-year sentence for armed robbery.
Police Investigating To See If Victim Of Drive-By Was Targeted
(Durham, NC) -- Police in Durham say one woman was injured by gunfire Sunday night as someone discharged several rounds from a car. It happened around 10 p.m. along the 24-hundred-block of Glenbrook Drive and East Club Boulevard. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Police say they don't know if the woman was targeted. Investigators are searching for a suspect seen driving away in a dark colored sedan.
Apartment Fire Leaves Couple Without Place To Stay
(Raleigh, NC) -- An investigation is underway into the cause of a fire Sunday afternoon that forced two people from their homes. It happened at an apartment complex off Hunting Ridge Road. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to just one unit of the building. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire appears to have been accidental.
Protesters Prevented From Coming Close To Confederate Group Meeting
(Raleigh, NC) -- Nearly 100-marchers lined the streets of the Brier Creek section of Raleigh Saturday to protest an annual meeting of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The meeting, held at the Embassy Suites, was attended by about 50-to-60 SCV members, who came to hear lectures about the civil war, Confederate history and southern history. The protesters, led by the group 'Smash Racism Raleigh', tried to assemble in front the hotel but were blocked by a police barricade. They also blocked off several lots close to the hotel. There were no arrests and no injuries were reported at the event.
House Fire Sends One Man To Hospital With Burns
(Person County, NC) -- One person had to be hospitalized after being injured in a house fire in Person County Sunday night. Firefighters responded to a call of a heavily involved blaze around 8 p.m. at a home on Gunstone Lane in Timberlake. When they arrived, they found the house fully engulfed in flames. Authorities say the man who lived inside managed to get out alive, but suffered severe burn wounds. No word on his condition. The fire was brought under control in about 40-minutes.
Suspect Held On Charges Of Sexually Assaulting Disabled Woman
(Raleigh, NC) -- Police are holding a North Carolina man on charges that he sexually assaulted an NC State student with a disability. It happened last Tuesday at an on-campus apartment. Investigators say the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Roberto Alvarez Jr., allegedly forced his way into the victim's home and fondled, hugged and kissed her while she was unable to defend herself. Alvarez has been charged with sexual battery, breaking and entering and assault on an individual with a disability.
Rowan County Yarn Plant To Close
(Rowan County, NC) -- Around 100 employees at a yarn manufacturer in Rowan County are losing their jobs. Parkdale Mills is planning to close its Landis plant this spring due to changing business conditions. Parkdale's corporate campus in Gastonia will still remain in business. The company has closed two other North Carolina facilities in the last three years.
Man Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting In Mocksville
(Mocksville, NC) -- The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into a deadly officer-involved shooting in Mocksville. Officers were called to the scene around 4 p.m. Saturday after reports of someone shooting from a moving vehicle. They stopped the vehicle near a BP on U.S. Highway 601 South. One of the passengers, identified as Austin Wilson, opened fire, and an officer returned fire. Wilson died at the hospital. The officer was placed on temporary leave.
Four People Hurt In Forsyth Co. Crash
(Forsyth Co., NC) -- Four people are hurt after a chase ended in a wreck in Forsyth County. A sheriff's deputy tried to stop a BMW sedan on I-74/311, near Ridgewood Road, yesterday morning. The driver refused to pull over, and a pursuit began. It ended when the BMW crashed into an SUV and a tree before coming to a stop on its roof. The driver, Wesley Liriano of Kernersville, was arrested. Liriano and two of his passengers, as well as the driver of the SUV, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Man Killed In Hit-And-Run In Lexington ID'd
(Lexington, NC) -- Lexington police are identifying the man killed in a hit-and-run accident. The body of 46-year-old Enrique Williams was found Sunday morning on the side of North Business 29-70, just north of the Winston Road interchange. Police say the victim had been hit the night before. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who knows anything about it is urged to call Lexington P-D.
