Hundreds Mourn Loss Of Henderson County Deputy
(Henderson County, NC) -- The Henderson County community is mourning the death of a young deputy. Ryan Hendrix was 35-years-old when he was killed in the line of duty last week. Hundreds of people showed up outside the sheriff's office last night for a memorial in his honor. Funeral services have been announced for Friday at Mud Creek Baptist Church beginning at 10 a.m.
Police Resignations Up In APD
(Asheville, NC) -- Police officers are leaving the Asheville department at a faster rate than normal. The Citizen-Times reports more than 30 officers, or 13-percent, have quit since June 1st. Chief David Zack says it's normal to see up to 20 resign from the force through an entire year. There's no word on why each officer resigned, but the actions come in the wake of a busy summer of protests amid a call for change in social injustice.
Camper Dies In Great Smokies
(Swain County, NC) -- Rangers are investigating the death of a camper in the Hazel Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Hikers reportedly came across a campsite on Friday, where a bear was scavenging an area that included human remains. Park rangers euthanized the bear and are actively investigating the official cause of death of the camper. The Hazel Creek area site is on the North Carolina side of the park.

Tropical Storm May Have Impacts In WNC
(Asheville, NC) -- A tropical storm churning in the Gulf of Mexico could cause impacts in North Carolina later this week. The National Weather Service is predicting Tropical Storm Sally to turn into a hurricane before it hits somewhere along Mississippi or Louisiana tomorrow. The system is expected to turn inland back into Alabama and Georgia. Current predictions call for several inches of rain in western North Carolina, with any wind damages unknown at this point.
Woman Arrested For Gastonia Murder
(Gastonia, NC) -- A woman is facing murder charges in Gastonia. Investigators say 31-year-old Valencia McLean allegedly shot a man to death inside their home on River Trace Saturday afternoon. She's now in jail without bond.
One Injured In North Charlotte Fire
(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte firefighters are searching for the cause of a Sunday morning blaze. Flames ripped through the second floor of a home on Alexander Forest Drive in north Charlotte. One person was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Driver Shot, Pedestrian Struck
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating the shooting of a driver in east Charlotte. Officers say the driver lost control after being shot several times on Eastway Drive Sunday afternoon. The car struck a pedestrian, but both the driver and pedestrian were last said to be stable. No suspects have been arrested.
Armed Man Shot By York County
(York County, SC) -- A deputy-involved shooting is being investigated in York County. South Carolina's state law enforcement division was called in on Saturday after a deputy reportedly shot an armed man during a domestic violence call in the Lesslie community. The man was rushed to the hospital, but his condition hasn't been released.

That was 258 fewer than the day before. The figures also showed a slight decrease in the number of hospitalizations with a drop of 39-to-831 patients statewide. Of the nearly 185-thousand people who have tested positive since the beginning of the pandemic, three-thousand-52 have died.
Expect Delays In Issuance Of Gun Permits In Wake County
(Wake County, NC) -- People who have filled out applications for gun permits in Wake County are being forewarned to expect delays after 10 employees in the Permits Division were ordered to self-quarantine due to one of them testing positive for COVID-19. News of the positive test result was first reported on Saturday. Sheriff Gerald Baker announced yesterday that in the absence of the quarantined employees, his office is working to assemble a modified crew to help process around two-thousand applications per week. Baker said Wake County has a backlog of more than four-thousand. The Permits Division Office will remain open.

Durham Police Investigating Three Sunday Shootings
(Durham, NC) -- Police in Durham are investigating three shootings that occurred Sunday morning. The first incident happened shortly after 2 a.m. along the 3600-block of Hillsborough Road. Authorities say a man and a woman were wounded by gunfire. The male victim's injuries were reported to be life threatening. The woman is expected to survive. The second shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. along the 900-block of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. Witnesses say the shots came from an occupied vehicle. The victim's injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.

Person Shot During Barricade Situation Near Liberty
(Liberty, NC) -- The suspect in a barricade situation in Randolph County is being treated for a gunshot wound. It started as a domestic incident yesterday afternoon at a home on Highway 49 North, just outside the Liberty city limits. Sheriff's officials say shots were fired inside the home and at responding officers. After several hours of negotiations, the suspect was shot and transported to a local hospital for treatment. The SBI is investigating.
Man Turns Himself In For Aunt's Murder
(Madison, NC) -- A man is under arrest for murder in Rockingham County in connection with the gruesome death of his aunt. Forty-two-year-old Casey Scales turned himself in on Saturday. He's accused of killing his aunt, 57-year-old Teresa Wright, who was found "seriously assaulted" after deputies conducted a welfare check at her home on Pleasantville Church Road. She later died at the hospital. Scales is being held without bail.
Scientists At WSSU Working With NASA On Space Gardening
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A team of scientists at Winston-Salem State University is partnering with NASA to research food development in space. As part of the four-year Space Act Agreement, the astrobotanists will use synthetic dirt, that resembles lunar and martian soil, to grow food in space. NBC News 12 says so far, the team has grown peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers. They regularly present their findings to NASA and U.S. government officials.

(San Francisco, CA) -- Twitter is flagging another tweet from President Trump, who urged voters to go to polling sites in North Carolina to confirm their mail-in votes are tallied. It's the platform's latest mediation of Trump's comments on the election. Twitter posted a notice saying it violated their Civic Integrity Policy by encouraging people to vote twice, which is illegal. The tweet is still up, but the notice limits engagement with it.
Elderly Man Killed In High Point Crash
(High Point, NC) -- An elderly man is dead after he crashed his car down an embankment in High Point. It happened Saturday evening on Business 85, near Baker Road. Police say 72-year-old Gregory Hinson lost control of his vehicle, ran off the roadway and crashed into an embankment. He died at the scene. Investigators believe he may have suffered a health emergency because there were no signs of speeding or impairment.
