(Undated) -- The U.S. Army reserve is investigating a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in North Carolina. It comes after romantic text messages between Cal Cunningham and the wife of an injured Army veteran surfaced last week. Cunningham is also a lieutenant colonel in the Army reserve. Incumbent Senator Thom Tillis tweeted the Democrat owes North Carolina a full explanation. Cunningham told CBS17 yesterday the campaign isn't about his personal life but rather about the citizens of North Carolina.

COVID-19 Hospitalizations Up In Asheville

(Asheville, NC) -- COVID-19 hospitalizations are up in the mountains. The chief medical officer for Mission Health told WLOS-TV that hospitalizations are back up around 40 per day compared to around ten less than a few weeks ago. Numbers of hospitalized patients across North Carolina have also risen past one-thousand for the first time since last month.

Reward Offered Over Protest Assault

(Asheville, NC) -- A reward is being offered in an Asheville protest assault. Chad Nesbitt was hospitalized last month after a confrontation with protesters near Roger McGuire Green at Pack Square Park. He's the founder of a Facebook group called Skyline News. The group is offering one-thousand-dollars for information in the case. Nesbitt has since been released from the hospital, but reportedly can't walk without help.

Three Arrested In Buncombe Drug Bust

(Buncombe County, NC) -- Three suspects are facing charges in a Buncombe County drug bust. WLOS-TV reports deputies arrested a Waynesville man, Buncombe County man and Cary woman after finding a combined three pounds of meth on Tuesday. Each person was charged with trafficking and possession. Sheriff Quentin Miller said the office will continue to target high-level trafficking.

Asheville Man Sentenced For Child Sex Crimes

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville man is heading to prison for child sex crime charges. A judge sentenced James Sherlin yesterday to a minimum of 12 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor. Asheville police officers seized 23-hundred images considered either child pornography or child erotica from Sherlin's home a little more than two years ago.

Two NC Schools Taking Part In Re-Located Basketball Tourney

(Asheville, NC) -- Two North Carolina universities are scheduled to take part in a college basketball tournament in Asheville. The NCAA moved the Maui Invitational in Hawaii to western North Carolina due to COVID-19. The Harrah's Cherokee Center will host the annual tournament in late November, and organizers announced yesterday that UNC and Davidson College will compete. There are no plans for fans to attend.

Officer Cited For Termination After Shooting Last Year

(Charlotte, NC) -- A CMPD officer is being cited for termination for a shooting that injured a Gastonia officer. Heather Loveridge fired her gun while helping serve a search warrant in the Derita neighborhood last November. She was placed on administrative leave after the shooting, but just cited for termination this week following a long investigation. The injured Gastonia officer was assisting an FBI task force.

Pedestrian Hit By Unmarked CMPD Car

(Charlotte, NC) -- A pedestrian is being treated for serious injuries in connection to an accident with an off-duty police officer. Investigators say the person was struck by an unmarked CMPD patrol car on East Independence Boulevard Wednesday night. Injuries were considered life-threatening. It's unclear if the officer faces charges.

Two Suspects Charged In Baby's Death

(York County, SC) -- A man and woman are facing charges in the death of an infant in York County. The woman's seven-week-old baby girl died in late June due to alleged blunt force trauma to the head. Both suspects were arrested this week for homicide by child abuse and unlawful neglect. The man is not the baby's father.

Violent Crime Up In Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- Violent crime in Charlotte is up over this time last year. The CMPD released figures yesterday that show an eleven-percent uptick for the first nine months of the year compared to the same time in 2019. There have been 88 homicides so far in 2020, which outpaces last year. There's actually been a ten-percent drop in overall crime despite the number of homicides in the Queen City.

Lowes Giving Out 100-Million In Bonuses

(Mooresville, NC) -- Lowe's employees are receiving a round of bonuses next week. The Mooresville-based company says it's handing out 100-million-dollars to its hourly associates as a thank you to front-line employees. Part-time and seasonal workers will be rewarded with an extra 150-dollars, while full-time hourly workers receive 300-bucks. Lowe's has provided bonuses to employees several times since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

Federal Judge Delays Ruling On North Carolina Absentee Ballot Controversy

(Raleigh, NC) -- A North Carolina federal judge delayed a ruling Wednesday on two lawsuits that have been filed over the issue of witness signatures on absentee ballots. This comes after the North Carolina State Board of Elections recently ordered some of the rules amended in order to make it easier for voters in certain categories to cast absentee ballots. Judge William Osteen indicated he could make a ruling as early as next week.

In a written statement, the Governor said James Carr McLamb's nomination was being rescinded after allegations surfaced that he had engaged in sexually aggressive and abusive behavior against his ex-girlfriend.

Red Cross Sending Volunteers To Help Out After Hurricane Delta Makes Landfall in South Louisiana

(Raleigh, NC) -- More than 20-responders from the Triangle Chapter of the American Red Cross are being dispatched to southern Louisiana to provide help and assistance to residents and businesses who will be impacted by Hurricane Delta. The storm is expected to make landfall sometime between late Friday night and early Saturday morning as a category 2 storm. Winds of more than 100-mph are expected. The relief agency says more volunteers will be needed.

New Coronavirus Cases Appear To Be On The Rise In North Carolina

(Raleigh, NC) -- The number of new coronavirus cases in North Carolina continued to trend upward on Wednesday. The one-thousand-711 infections was 207-more than the day before. Figures released by the Department of Health and Human Services also showed a sharp increase in the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations at one-thousand-28, the highest since August. North Carolina's positivity rate had dropped to six-point-four-percent.

Suspect In Custody In Cold Case Murder

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police are announcing an arrest in a two-year-old murder case. A warrant was obtained for 29-year-old Malcom Blowe on September 24th. He was taken into custody last week in Norfolk, Virginia. Blowe is accused of shooting 28-year-old Christopher Young in October 2018. Young died at the hospital.

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- The deadline to register to vote in the November 3rd election is this Friday. Folks can register through the North Carolina DMV's online portal, in-person at the DMV, by mail, or at voter-registration events. The early voting period starts October 15th.

People Who Attended Charlotte Beer Fest Asked To Get COVID-19 Test

Mecklenburg County health officials tell the Charlotte Observer two positive cases have been linked to the event. The Mecktoberfest celebration was held at the Olde Mecklenburg Brewery from September 25th to 27th. Public Health Director Gibbie Harris said the beer garden was packed with mostly mask-less patrons.

Rent In The Triad Is Going Up

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Rental prices in the Triad are going up. That's according to a national analysis by software company RealPage. The study showed rent prices in larger cities, like New York and San Francisco, decreasing, but rent in Greensboro and Winston-Salem went up by over three-percent. The Triad Apartment Association tells Fox 8 News supply and demand is the main reason for the increase.
