(Arden, NC) -- Firefighters are investigating a blaze at the home of Buncombe County's sheriff. The Arden residence of Sheriff Quentin Miller reportedly suffered significant damages after fire broke out yesterday. There were no injuries reported. The sheriff's office has asked for privacy of the sheriff and his family to be respected. It's unclear what caused the blaze.

Attorney Files Excessive Force Complaints With APD

(Asheville, NC) -- Some Asheville police officers are being accused of using excessive force during protests earlier this year. WLOS-TV says attorney Ben Scales filed 20 formal complaints with the department's Professional Standards Division on Monday. He claims some people have accused officers of directly targeting them with chemical munitions. The city held a Public Safety Committee yesterday, where some accounts from anonymous individuals were read out.

State Launches COVID-19 Alert System

(Raleigh, NC) -- The state is launching its own alert system to gauge COVID-19 spread in different communities. Counties will be placed into either a yellow level for significant spread, orange for substantial or red for critical. Nearly 33-hundred new COVID-19 cases were reported statewide yesterday by public health officials. Over 15-hundred people are currently hospitalized, which is another record.

Henderson County Considering Initiatives For New Company Investment

(Flat Rock, NC) -- Henderson County leaders are considering an incentive package today for a company looking to expand in Flat Rock. The unnamed company is hoping to invest nearly 40-million-dollars and add 150 jobs. A separate incentive package being considered is for a company wanting to add 60 jobs.

Two Deaths Investigated In Buncombe County

(Asheville, NC) -- Investigators are still trying to figure out the cause of death for two people in Buncombe County. An autopsy is scheduled later this week after a body was found inside a car at the Walmart Supercenter in Arden on Monday. There's still no word on another death investigation. A body was discovered near the French Broad River on Monday as well.

Vegas Flight Added At Asheville Airport

(Asheville, NC) -- Those looking for entertainment out west will be happy with a new flight out of Asheville Regional Airport. Allegiant will start offering a direct flight to Las Vegas, twice a week, beginning next March. The executive director of the airport authority called it significant news for the region. It's the farthest westbound destination that has a non-stop flight out of Asheville.

Suspect In Sandwich Shop Murder Accused Of More Killings

(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect in the killing of a Charlotte sandwich shop owner is being connected to several other murders. The CMPD said yesterday that Steven Staples is now the second suspect accused in the murder of Scott Brooks, who was shot to death during a robbery outside the Brooks' Sandwich House last December. The first suspect was arrested in March. Investigators have linked Staples to three other murders in Charlotte and another in Hickory.

COVID-19 Outbreak Identified At Shelter

(Charlotte, NC) -- Health officials are keeping a close eye on a COVID-19 outbreak at a Charlotte shelter. The Salvation Army is reporting 17 residents and three staff members at its Center of Hope Shelter for Women and Children have tested positive in the last two weeks. The patients have been moved off-site for the time being.

Charlotte Woman Arrested For Road Rage Shooting

(Fort Mill, SC) -- A Charlotte woman is accused of attempted murder in connection with a road rage incident. The 23-year-old allegedly fired a gunshot towards a car around I-77 and Highway 160 in Fort Mill earlier this month. The victim was not hurt. Fort Mill Police say the woman turned herself in this week.

Arrest Made In Stanly County Hit-And-Run

(Stanly County, NC) -- The suspect in a Stanly County hit-and-run is now in jail. Troopers say an 18-year-old struck a 69-year-old woman while she rode her bicycle just off Highway 24/27 in Locust last Saturday. The victim's son told WSOC-TV she had hip surgery in Charlotte earlier this week and is now stable. The suspect has been arrested for felony hit-and-run causing serious injury or death.

New Charlotte Restaurant Named Nation's Second Best

(Charlotte, NC) -- A new Charlotte restaurant is gaining some respect from Esquire magazine. Esquire just ranked Leah & Louise in Camp North End as number-two on its best new restaurants list nationwide. Chef Gregory Collier already garnered praise earlier this year with his nomination as a James Beard Award semifinalist for his work at another restaurant, Uptown Yolk. The magazine called his Black Southern cuisine both innovative and fun.

COVID-19 Numbers Steadily Increasing Across North Carolina

(Raleigh, NC) -- COVID-19 metrics in North Carolina continue to trend in the wrong direction. Health and Human Services data released Tuesday show the number of coronavirus patients in the hospital was the largest single-day total since the beginning of the pandemic, one-thousand-501. The state's positivity rate also jumped to eight-point-six-percent. The number of new coronavirus cases was three-thousand-288 Tuesday. There were also 38 additional deaths reported, which brought the total to 48-hundred-52.

State's Largest School District Approves Plan To Allow High School To Return For In-Person Classes

(Wake County, NC) -- The Wake County Board of Education has approved a new plan for returning students to classes in the spring of 2021. During a meeting Tuesday night, board members voted 7-to-1 in favor of allowing high school students to return for in-person classroom instruction using a three-week rotation model. The plan would also allow the District to go back to virtual learning if there is a significant outbreak of new COVID-19 cases.

Race For Chief Justice Of Supreme Court Headed To Recount

(Raleigh, NC) -- There will be a recount in the race for the position of Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. The announcement made by the State Board of Elections Tuesday after unofficial results showed incumbent Democrat Cheri Beasley losing to her Republican Challenger Paul Newby by just 366-votes out of a total of five-point-four-million cast. State law allows a recount if the margin is 10-thousand votes or less. The recount will begin later this week.

No Parades, Festivals Or Large Special Events Can Be Held In Raleigh For Next Five Months

(Raleigh, NC) -- The City of Raleigh has announced the cancellation of all in-person special events until at least the end of March 2021. The cancellation includes all parades, road races, festivals and other social and entertainment events that would attract large groups of people. City leaders sighted the threat of the spread of COVID-19 as the reason.

Josh Stein Claims Victory As N.C. Attorney General

(Raleigh, NC) -- Josh Stein is declaring victory in his re-election race for North Carolina Attorney General. Stein announced yesterday he's defeated his Republican challenger, Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill. He leads O'Neill by over 13-thousand votes with results still pending in Rockingham and Stanly counties.

PD: Man Killed Outside Courthouse Was Targeted

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police say the man who was shot and killed outside of the Guilford County Courthouse late Monday morning was targeted. Twenty-year-old Avion McClean was gunned down near the South Eugene Street entrance to the courthouse. Two other people were injured. So far, no arrests have been made.

Victim Killed In Greensboro Shooting

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police have another deadly shooting on their hands. Thirty-year-old Lashon Ellerbe was shot Monday night in the one-thousand-block of Logan Street. He was rushed to a local hospital where he died of his injuries. Police have not announced an arrest in the case or a possible motive.
